CC is mulling an offer of 140 million/ 6 year from the 3rd place New York Yankee's who hope to buy their way out of 3rd place with a big splash in the FA market. Since he didn't accept it outright we hold out hope that CC is hoping someone in California gets involved.
Peter Gammons said today that the Dodgers might be getting ready to make a proposal. We have been told that we won't go over 3 years for CC, so how can we make an offer that is competitive with the big boys?

This way CC gets the largest year to year deal in baseball history for a pitcher while protecting his future. After three years he can opt out for $1 and sign another large free agent deal if he is healthy and did well the previous three years. If for some reason he blows out his arm he is still guaranteed $10 million in 2012/2013. This gives him big big money, flexibility , and security for 5 years.
We know the Players Union is pressuring him to take the Yankee deal because of the length and amount, but we also know that he loves to hit and wants to play in California.
In other free agent news, Ryan Dempster e-signed with the Cubs for 4 years/52 Million. Lot of money for a guy who just had his first good year as a starter. Better them then us.
Jeremy Affeldt signed with the Giants. I liked him and I'd rather have him then Beimel.

Do you really think we won’t go over 3 years for CC? I thought that was just speculation (err, utter nonsense) by Olney. I think we would go at least 5 years for CC. You won’t sign many young, star players for 3 years or less.
Regardless, I don’t see him accepting anything not near the guaranteed money the Yankees offered. Hopefully I’m wrong though. I’d try to match the Yankees deal or at least get close to it, with it being backloaded if need be to try to get Manny. After Schmidt/Andruw are gone, the 25M wouldn’t look so bad.

Ned has
only gone over 3 years for one player and that turned out to be his biggest mistake. I agree that it will be hard to sign the best if he won’t stray over 3 years. I don’t have the quote with me but he did mention the three year threshold so it was not like Olney or whoever was just making it up.

I think Schmidt was worse
At least Pierre is healthy, although Schmidt’s contract was much more justified at the time. The thing is, the Pierre contract was a huge mistake from the beginning, even if everything had gone ideally, because Pierre just isn’t very good. CC obviously is. The mistake with Pierre was not only that the contract was long, but that Pierre wouldn’t be worth the money in any year of the deal. CC would be if he can put up similiar numbers, but there was no chance Pierre would be worth 10M a year.
I would hope Ned can differentiate between the 2 situations, because they are way different. Knowing him that might be too much to ask, but seriously, this isn’t complicated, he should at least somewhat get this. CC is a top 3 pitcher in the game, Pierre isn’t even a good CF in his best years. One is worth the risk, the other isn’t. Get ’er done, Ned.

I don’t think Ned has any say right now in the length of the deals. His previous deals have left him neutered.
I was always on board with the Schmidt signing. It didn’t work out but I can’t criticize it.

This policy should help us with some of the lesser free agents though. I can only imagine what Ned might do unrestricted if we dont get Manny or CC.
