Welcome Back, Manny

A couple of things happened today that seem to bode well for the return of Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers:

1) The Yankees signed Mark Teixeira to an 8-year, $180 million deal

With Tex entrenched at 1B, the Yankees now have five players for four spots (outfield and DH):

Hideki Matsui - $13 million for 2009

Johnny Damon - $13 million for 2009

Nick Swisher - $5.3 million for 2009

Xavier Nady - arbitration eligible

Melky Cabrera - arbitration eligible

I don't want to put anything past the mighty Yankee empire, but it's fair to assume they will not be in the market for Manny.  They have to have some limit, right?

2) The Angels publicly stated they are out of the Manny sweepstakes

Normally, statements issued by GMs or other team executives are vague, leaving some wiggle room either way.  However, Angels' GM and noted Del Taco fan Tony Reagins had this choice quote today:

"With Torii Hunter, Vladimir Guerrero, Gary Matthews Jr., Reggie Willits, our outfield is intact. It will not happen. We are not going to sign Manny Ramirez. End of story."

That seems pretty ironclad to me that the Angels are also out of the Manny bidding.

We already know the Red Sox are not going to sign Manny Ramirez; too many bridges were burned in that exit, by both sides.  To me, that leaves three teams with a realistic chance to sign Mr. Ramirez:

1) Mets: They have said they are not interested in Manny, although in less certain terms than Reagins

2) Orioles: They missed out on Teixeira, but they have the ability to shift Manny to DH down the line.  Maybe they would offer a longer deal to Manny, but would Manny want to go to Baltimore?

3) Dodgers: The Dodgers, to date, are the only team to even offer a contract to Manny.  I'm intrigued that Ned Colletti hasn't bid against himself, and it looks like his patience has paid off.

At this point, I would be shocked if Manny Ramirez isn't wearing number 99 for the Dodgers on April 6 in San Diego.  And I'll be there in attendance, most likely wearing the same jersey.

knocking on wood

I’m hoping you’re right. I’m hoping we sign Manny to a 1-year arbitration year so he’s motivated all season. I also hope next year is Matt Kemp’s breakout year.

Arbitration not possible

Manny already declined arbitration, so that’s out the window. Although the offers haven’t been there yet, I think the Dodgers will have to go longer than one year. :)

Not only will I

be shocked if he’s playing LF, but even more so if he’s wearing 99.

Fernando to Seal the Deal?

Maybe Valenzuela will reach out and approve Manny’s usage of #34 to help finalize Manny’s return!

re:

34 should be retired. I don’t care that he’s not a HOF, he is and has been the most popular Dodger since he first took to the mound for his 1st start in 1981, 27 years ago.

It sort of is retired

No one has worn #34 since Fernando’s last game as a Dodger in 1990. Informally it is retired, but you are right Fernando should get the ceremony and display in the pavilion.

Why would you be shocked if he's playing left field?
I've never felt with Boras as his agent that

Manny was coming back so I’ll be shocked if he is in left field.

Eric and I are going to do a Pro/Con on Manny sometime soon. I’ll be taking the con side.

You have a sneakly headline
#34

“If” the Dodgers sign Manny – then Fernando could wear dreds and give Manny the #34 uni as a part of the openeing day pre-game cerimonies.

I don't think the Mets have the money

They already got K-Rod/Putz and will almost assuredly get another SP (Lowe/Perez). Also, according to this article:

http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf/2008/12/ramirez_to_the_mets_not_so_fas.html

the Mets won’t or can’t go after Manny. So I think its us vs. the Orioles and Nats? I doubt they will be too seriously after him though. Maybe the Rays? I expect they will go after a cheaper DH? The only other extreme longshot is the Cubs to play RF but I really doubt it.

Very cool

I’m smiling like George Peppard, muttering to myself, “I love it when a plan comes together.”

LOL

You and me both. Lets just finish the deal now.
