Game 3 Chat: San Francisco Giants

Well, the fancy autopost game chat failed. Last minute switch to Kuo versus Merkin Valdez.

Well, this is a bad start.

And the always sympathetic Dodger crowd starts the boos.

I Found That Amusing.

But if you let two straight Giants on from this team, you kind of deserve it.

It's Amazing What Rain Can Do

Not only does it take away Bills versus Lincecum, but it turned my night from exercise to drinkin.

You Southern Cal People

Are scared of rain more than Southerners are scared of snow.

Are you a big fan of runnin' in the rain?

It Makes Me Think I'm Rocky.

That's Amazing

How do you only get 89 RBI with Barry in front of you?

Be Very Bad At Baseball?

I still can't believe that the Giants bat their 60 million dollar investment behind Bengie.

I Still Can't Believed The Signed Him.

It's one of the least offensive things Sabean has done recently

I Disagree.

I mean he has defensive value, but you don't know what you're getting with his offense. Is it 4th OFer Aaron Rowand, or borderline All-Star Aaron Rowand? That's not a gamble I'd take, especially when it was obvious this team didn't need to sign any player like Aaron Rowand. If you're not going to re-sign Bonds, you need to rebuild. Billy Beane recognized that fact, and look how many prospects he got.

I completely agree, but think about what kind of moves you're comparing that against. Sabean didn't manage to lose any young talent in the deal. Except for that draft pick.

And the 60 Million

That would've been better spent getting talent from Latin America and on draft bonuses. I know we just think money is only money, but that money could've gone into signing bonuses and 16 year old Latin American kids with fake birth certificates.

However, I forgot. Sabean hates draft picks. Even though his two best players are from their drafting.

Nice to see Kuo get out of that

He Settled Down After Honeycutt Came Out.

I wonder what he said.

Probably,

This team is horrible. Just throw fastballs down the middle. They can't hit them.

It looked like Kent was giving Kuo the buisness.

He Was Probably Telling Him How To Steal Video Games From Target.

I suppose the magician is a better nickname than the obvious when your name is Merkin.

Isn't He Supposed to be Pretty Good?

For a Giants' prospect

You're Going to Make the Guys

At McCovey Chronicles angry. They're going to come over here and fight us.

I think they're more resigned to their teams fate than anything.

Then again, it would boost traffic, so bring it on.

Their Gameday Thread

Already has 229 posts.

It tends to happen when they have the best writer on SBN writing for them. Shame he has that massive character flaw.

Bill Plaschke Writes for McCovey Chronicles?

We just got Merkined

But it's a perfect time to bust out the Kingston.

Is That A Brand of Beer?

Re

It's a very strong girl drink (6 parts dark rum, 3 parts gin, 2 parts lime, 1 part grenadine), but I screwed up, poured Vodka and had to audible to the Yalia.

That Sounds Pretty Good

Girl drink or not. What's a Yalia?

Also, if you want a sweet girl drink, take a Mike's Hard Berry (Lemonade?), and stick a lemon in it. This was discovered by accident when my brother jammed his lemon slice from his mixed drink in my sister's Mike's when she wasn't looking. It tastes like candy. Even more than Mike's usually does.

Too girly, even for me.

Yalia is equal parts vodka and sweet and sour, half of that in gin and a splash of 7-up.

Did You Just Hear That Stat Vinny Gave?

Zito sucks.

Missed it.

Zito Was Only Able To Get One Dodger To Swing And Miss Last Night.

Makes sense. He was Moyer esque on Monday.

Wow, they had this guy in the minors for six years.

Re

He's going to get picked up in a bunch of fantasy leagues tomorrow. I hope the people in my league drop somebody good.

I Hope It Was Because He Was Injured

Doesn't look like it. He made his debut in 2004 and just doubled his professional innings tonight.

Just Think

Barry Bonds made Baker look better than he really is, and he probably made Sabean look better, too, considering he didn't have to sign anybody actually good while they had Bonds.

He got Kent for the last gasps of Matt Williams, that worked out pretty well.

Actually almost everything he did before 2002 was gold.

What About David Bell?

Even he gave the Giants above average performance.

He was 7th in the NL in sac flies that year!

Taschner owns Kemp apparently.

Why Did They Take Merkin Out?

Probably only pitched one inning at a time in Spring.

Gotta say the Pee Wee name doesn't work for me.

Not of a Fan of It.

Who gave it to him?

According to Vinny, his family.

He Needs to Get a New Family.

Let's Go Troncoso!

This is like a spring game

Steiner's On.

I predict some more DeWitt love tonight.

Move over Ted Williams, he's hitting .500.

First Extra Base Hit for the Giants

This season. Better throw it back into their dugout. It's going to be their only one this season.

Phrases You Never Want To Hear

Let's see if Rajai Davis, Bocock, and Taschner can cash 'em in.

that lineup vs. Troncoso reaffirms my AAA thought.

I Doubt That Phrase Will Ever Be Uttered Again.

Potential Kirk Gibson moment here.

Pretty sure Pierre wouldn't have got that. I guess the three rabbit strategy isn't so good after all.

Lincecum works fast, I like that.

You've Got A Little Fight In You, I Like That.

Movie quote!

You made a reference I didn't get, I like that.

It's From The New Batman Movie

The Joker says it to Rachel Dawes in the trailer.

I'd just like to point out that Katie Holmes turned down the Dark Knight (she said because she just had a baby), and instead filmed the movie Mad Money, which came and went very quickly, I'm sure. How can you turn down a role in the Batman movie?!

My Faith Is Being Shaken

I might trade Kershaw for Lincecum.

See, now that's just badass right there.

You filthy heathen

Lincecum is good, but Kershaw can walk on water. And beat up Chuck Norris.

I Had To Trade My Brother

Brandon Webb for Kershaw and Loney in our keeper league because he drafted Kershaw when I didn't even know Kershaw was available to be drafted.

Kershaw got thrown back into the draft pool in my league since the guy who had him couldn't let go of Alex Gordon. That was good times for the guy who got the first pick in our rookie draft.

Billy?

Just got home, and OH boy am I mad Bills didn't pitch.
What's the reasoning for that? Too lazy to scroll through 90 posts.

Nice to see our only hit of the game so far, from the third-most expensive roster in the league, has come from our fourth-string 3B. This team gives me ulcers.

Re

Torre didn't want to lose a Bills start to a rain delay.

You're Going To Have Some Health Problems

If you're getting sick after the 3rd game of the season.

That was not a strike.

Steiner Says You're Wrong.

Ahhhh...

Makes sense, I guess.

So ... does anyone still have faith in Kuo? I love that Taiwanese bastard, but his habitual 1/1 strikeout to walk ratio is rattling.

Yea, I Still Like Him.

Billingsley's In The Bullpen.

cmooon loney....

Bocock sucks c...

...nah, that's just juvenile.

That's Been the Theme of the Night.

Re

Are you dissing NL walk leader Brian Bocock?

Home a-Loney!

It's corny, but so am I.

You Owe Macaulay Culkin 5 dollars. That's Copyright Infringement.

Better than "someone call Tommy James, because it's Loney Loney!"

Lincecom v. Billingsley after all.

My fantasy team thanks Joe Torre.

Andrew,

You're getting some traffic now!

I'm lovin' it, usually my traffic bottoms out during games. Dodger Thoughts server issues are my gain.

Only three games, but I have to say Torre is already weird.

How So?

The Pierre start? Tonight's game?

both apply

the Pierre start and bringing Bills in for relief are both kinda weird.

Still though ... I live in the Bay, so any time I get to see Bills pitch (or the Dodgers in general) is a good day.

the instant update is a nice feature for game chat.

I love when my site integrates three year old technology.

Steiner Just Said

"Tim Redding outpitched Cole Hamels."

Did hell freeze over?

Well, yeah, I'll never be happy with a JP start unless there is a good reason. Game 2 was not such a time.

Tonight I thout the justification for not starting Billingsley was odd, but then to take out Kou for no apparent reason was also odd.

Anyway, it has worked out, but that is never a good thing on which to rely.

We need two outs here Chad, let's hurry it up.

Stop Letting These Craptastic Players on Base

stop rushing him. ;)

Hmmmm, might be time to slow it down.

Ummmm..

Well, horsepucky.

I Hate Rain.

Juan Pierre's probably saying to himself:

"Quite Frankly, I totally could've caught that!"

I didn't realize we had Stephen A. Smith on the bench.

I Like To Think That

Juan Pierre Talks Like Him.

Thank you Ed Montague, that's veteran experience right there.

WooHoo!

The system fails again!

Chalk one up to Mother Nature for helping Bills out of a tough inning.

When's the Last Time That Happened at DS?

Welp, Rock Band time.

Just got in

what did I miss?

Well, if the rain keeps up,

You missed the game.

I'll Be Back When The Game Comes Back

Homework time.

I figure I should play some Boston due to my avatar.

Another True Blue LA comment record. Congrats everyone.

Two Rules

Don't go to the Rock Band store drunk.

Bang A Gong is the worst 2 dollars I've ever spent.

Seriously buying Paramour and Blink 182 songs worked better.

Blink 182?

Ugh.

I got tired of hearing "I don't know the words to that". So I buy every single pop song that comes up.

What Did You Buy Them With?

Your self-respect? Woo!

Wow. I better go to Ralphs and get a big steak now.

Game's Back in 5!

Time for me to grab a Jones' Soda! I'm going to be until 3!

HEY!

I'll admit I love both Blink-182 and Paramore.

Blink because I'm from SD and I've listened to them since middle school (and subsequently +44 and Angels & Airwaves).

Paramore because Hayley Williams is a babe (hurray for pedophilia!). And she can sing. Double threat.

Wait, how old is Hayley? This is really important.

I'm proud to say I've mocked my friends for liking Blink since 8th grade.

I'm Looking This Band Up on Wikipedia

She should be around 19-20. And why do you know her first name?

Because I heard that Hayley from Paramour is hot, and I like girls in bands.

There's a Difference Between Girls in Bands

And girls in good bands. Heart is a good band. Barracuda is a sweet song. Jefferson Airplane? Good band. (Jefferson Starship. Terrible band). I mean just think about if you dated some dumb girl in some dumb pop band like Avril Lavigne. And then she will write some ridiculous love song about you and the lyrics will be awful because she has most likely never read a book in her life, and then all your friends will make fun of you.

I'd cut Avril Lavigne a little more slack, although she'll be more tolerable when she escapes the teenybopper machine.

Double-A ++ point on Jefferson Airplane vs. Starship, though. One's a national treasure, the other a national crime.

Lavigne's the Worst

She tries to dress like a punk, and then rips on other pop singers because they're pop singers. She's probably never even heard of the Dead Kennedys.

None Of Those Are Good Reasons

For liking Blink-182.

And I just looked up Paramore on Youtube. I've heard that "Misery Business" song before. It's awful.

I don't have an excuse for liking Blink,

I just never outgrew them. I have a habit to listening to a lot of 90's alternative.

Hayley is 17. Misery Business is an alright but outplayed song ... check out their debut album, if you like, but it ain't exactly masculine music.

If I can scrounge up the dough, I'm seeing them next week in concert (with another favorite of mine, the just-as-easily-masculine Jimmy Eat World). Seen Paramore once before at a show, and I can honestly say they're one of the better bands I've seen live. Other bands at the show included Modest Mouse, Jimmy Eat World, Angels and Airwaves and Spoon, and Paramore was easily the best act.

Wikipedia Said She Was 13 in 2002,

And it is never wrong.

Crap. Time to scrub those thoughts.

Back in Action

Watching the game from SF ... TV guys are saying both managers were given a weather report saying rain wouldn't come for another hour or two.... and that's why they brought in the starters, figuring they had a 3 to 6 inning window open to them.

So, their moves make more sense to me now.

Looks like Lincecum is going to pitch for SF, and they say Loaiza is warming up for LA.

Snap

I'd turned off the tube ... I figured it was going to be called.
Hurray for more baseball!

Gold Glover, right there

yay

for Loaiza bringin' the heat at 86 mph.

Steiner and Monday

Love Blake DeWitt. Hagiography of DeWitt is spreading.

I can't hear you......

I'm liking Blake

We don't really have to bring Nomar back, do we?

Question That Has Been Floating In My Head

What bands that are big today will be around in 20 years? I've come up with Cold Play thanks to their mainstream acceptance, Queens Of The Stone Age because Josh Homme is the last rock star and they have indie cred and mainstream popularity despite going to band members like Spinal Tap and Muse since they're just rather good musicians and sometimes that works out. Any other suggestions?

I'd Go With

Radiohead, Pearl Jam, and Mastodon is my sleeper. They could become the next metal band that just lasts forever. I pick the first two because they all get along great and have changed their music as they've gotten over from rock to alternative. You can't be playing rock when you're in your 50's. Unless you're the Rolling Stones or AC/DC. But they need to retire. Like Grace Slick said, you just look dumb if you're playing rock music at 50.

I think Radiohead and Pearl Jam are too old to be considered. If the best band you can come up with for staying power started 15 years ago, you have problems.

I mean the rock world in general, not you yourself.

Well,

Coldplay isn't going to be around in 20 years if Radiohead retires because all they do is copy Radiohead. The most important thing for longevity is that the bandmates get along. Of course, some level of success is important, but if the band mates get along, then you're good. I mean I guess the White Stripes and the Killers would be my top two picks, but Brandon Flowers has a huge ego, and that's never good for a band's shelf life.

I just can't see the local classic rock station throwing down When You Were Young in 20 years.

White Stripes are a good choice.

On

a check swing, does the bat generally have to go beyond the front knee to be called a strike or do umps sometimes call it for less?

I Always Thought

As long as the bat went halfway around it was a check swing.

Yeah, halfway or broken wrists was my understanding.

I'm pretty sure wrists breaking is the rule.

Well, there's no rule, it's more like a convention. To my eye, it seems to have more to do with wrists breaking than where the bat actually is.

How the hell

are Lincecum and Velez on base? These guys don't exactly strike fear in the heart.

Putting

all these folks on base is going to suck when we start playing major league teams.

If Rich Aurilla can get his uniform retired in Little League, I totally deserve it for hitting .625 with a 100% stolen base rate.

They Didn't Let Us Steal Bases in Little League.

Sign You're Drunk #622

When you tell yourself "you know what sounds bomb? Mini tacos!"

Re

The very fact that you used the slang term "bomb," signifies you're drunk. Mini tacos are good anytime. I could go for some myself. Right now.

Bocock-Velez-Aurilia

The next Tinker-Evers-Chance?

Did Tinker Evers and Chance all suck at hitting?

In real life I say the word bomb about 15 times a day, so that ain't no thang.

naw,

"bomb" is a foul. "thang" is 15 yards, loss of down.

Yeah, thang is a sign that I'm about 15 minutes away from passing out.

Weak.

It's only 10:45 PDT.

Having a job causes several problem. I need to wake up in seven hours.

What Are You Doing That

You have to get up at 6 in the morning. That's too early.

Right now, inventory management code. It's not very exciting.

jeez

I guess the only way the Giants are going to have a decent bullpen this year is if it rains

So, About 3 Games This Year.

Steiner Just Said

To trade LaRoche because DeWitt's better.

Well, now I have to hate Charlie Steiner. You'd think he wait for a legit extra base hit before he said that.

I'm Just Kidding

I just wanted to mess with you.

Wow. That was so not an appropriate time for that.

That's be my 2009 answer, but this year.... let's see DeWitt play against more advanced opponents first, like the Diamondbacks... or some AAA team...

Nice Job

"Best Pinch Hitter in the League."

Good call on that one, Steiner.

Hit a homer, Russ!

I need some fantasy points...and we need to win the game!

Well, dagnbit. Just rememeber, I won't take any numbers seriously until russ has a hit.

come on

pull the trigger.

I'm gonna let everyone here try to carry on the game chat without me, i just hit the breaking point.

good night and good luck

Steiner

Just called Proctor, Dr. Proctor. Not sure, besides that it rhymes. I hope that is not his nickname.

I fear the worst.

I Think Everybody Left With You.

What part of "hold down the fort" did they miss?

All Of It, Apparently.

actually, i fell asleep on my couch.

Didn't get any sleep last night.

Not good, since I still have two articles to hammer out before I pass out.

I'm feeling for you right now. This is taking maximum effort form me.

I Thought You Were Going To Bed.

I am, but I just turned on gameday, so i'm good for a bit longer.

well, i'm still here

and dammit, Ethier, it's TYLER WALKER. You're not supposed to strike out!

Steiner

Mentioned the Goldfinger/Drago comparison again with Tyler Walker. Two times in two days.

Since I didn't hear that yesterday, I'll chalk it up as funny ... but it won't be next time, Steiner!

I'm Surprised He Mentioned Goldfinger

I like that movie, but it doesn't seem a good reference to make, unless the radio audience skews older.

I Realized Something About Rick Monday

He doesn't say anything terribly interesting as a color guy. For all of Joe Morgan's faults when he's a color guy, he at least explains strategies and other aspects of baseball that they might not catch, which I like a lot.

agreed

Along those lines, the Bay Area TV guys are fantastic -- Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper. They talk up all kinds of insights and strategy/performance nuances.

I've Got Miller and Some Guy

Is there another Bay Area channel? Is it KLOK?

I'll Have To Listen To Them Next Series.

Pierre on deck

Perfect Scenario For Him

Trying to get one run.

wow

dewitt apparently has supernatural getting-on-base powers.

Oh no, wait - he's just got Aurilia at 1B fielding the ball. never mind.

Pierre Can't Even Bunt Right.

Or steal against Bengie "slo-mo" Molina right

Double Damn.

Goodnight, everybody.

Pierre is so easy to hate

Night, all.

Looks like it's a good thing I missed the end of this.
