I like Colletti’s strategy. Keep on bringing in mediocre players, then DFA the previous mediocre player who you brought in because you thought he’d help you save your job.
True but the Pirates need the players just to start a rebuilding effort if he wants there to be a team centered around McLouth, Doumit and McCutchen. They’re at least five years away right now.
Another reason you should try to trade your talent at the deadline if you’re not contending: you’ll lose a few more games and probably get a higher draft pick as a result.
I’m not guaranteeing it by any means, but he’s only got 1/2 of a BABIP fueled season of usefulness above A ball. He hasn’t really shown any ability to hit at higher levels, but he’s still young.
I think you do this deal. I was hesitant about giving up Brignac because Bartlett is nothing great, but he’s good enough to be a stopgap for awhile longer.
Agreed. Brignac’s still at least a year away. He’s overwhelmed by AAA pitching right now. You can always pickup glove first shortstops as cheap filler anyway.
for the Rays to get Bay, they are one team that it would be worthwhile for. Maybe they got a great report on Baldelli and backed off. He might be activated this weekend. Talk about strange illnesses, I’m still not sure what he had.
I know this would never happen but LaRoche, Ethier, McDonald, Hu and, I don’t know, Beimel for those guys would probably be fatal in the long term, but a Bay/Manny/Kemp outfield would be damn fun.
Christina Kahrl (1:25:35 PM PT): Andrew (Los Angeles): Christina, I think you’re underestimating how much of Kotchman’s value comes from his defense.
It’s first base, and the first order of business at the position is hitting. Like lipstick on a pig, I suppose it’s nice enough, but I want bacon. If you want the Mientkiewicz types, that’s all well and good, but better to find a bopper.
Updated 4:28 p.m.: Manny traded to Dodgers Manny Ramirez has been traded to the Dodgers in a three-team blockbuster, pending the approval of the commissioner’s office, according to a source with knowledge of the deal.
Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is headed to the Red Sox. The Pirates will receive Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Damien Moss and releiver Craig Hansen from the Red Sox.
The Red Sox will pay all of the approximately $7 million remaining on Ramirez’s contract.
Chad Billingsley is wicked awesome.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Billingsley is like the McGriddle. The culmination of a hundred good things in one magnificent package
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
He should be pitching in this big 4 game series against the snakes; this series makes or breaks us!!!!
dodgerblueasian - July 31, 2008
We’re back in the hunt for Manny apparently.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Now the word is we’re offering Ethier instead of Kemp. I can’t believe we were even offering Kemp.
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
I can’t either, because the Sox would have jumped on that.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
I’m skipping lunch for this, so something good better come out of the trade deadline. Then again, I’m not even pretending to work, so it balances.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
You should order a pizza. You can’t pretend to work on an empty stomach!
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
I got cafeteria sushi. I might be dead before this all goes down.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Maddux deal is dead according to Jayson Stark. Thank God.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
I like Colletti’s strategy. Keep on bringing in mediocre players, then DFA the previous mediocre player who you brought in because you thought he’d help you save your job.
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
They can’t shoot you if you keep throwing out covering fire.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Beane’s apparently turned off his phone, so no Duscherer or Street.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Paul Byrd off the table too.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Best thing to do right now I think is play hardball with Pittsburgh. Huntington has to make a move to get the organization back on track.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
But Bay also has a year and a half left in Pittsburgh. He’ll get less for Bay if he trades later, but he’s not forced to accept a bad deal.
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
True but the Pirates need the players just to start a rebuilding effort if he wants there to be a team centered around McLouth, Doumit and McCutchen. They’re at least five years away right now.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
J. Bay supposedly traded from Brignac and Neimann.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
I thought the Rays were going to hold for Wade Davis. Guess not.
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
Brignac’s hitting .257/.304/.429 in AAA this year (albeit as a 22 year old) with a strikeout every 3.71 AB.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
As soon as I see that.
Will Carroll (12:10:22 PM PT): Does it surprise anyone that the Rays end up with nothing in this trade season?
Andrew - July 31, 2008
I like the line before that, that the Astros inquired about Dunn.
F@)! the heck?
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
Christina Karhl’s burn on Ed Wade is classic.
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
Ouch. The Astros have like eight worthwhile guys in their organization, that’s really the only option.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Junior goes to the White Sox.
Linix129 - July 31, 2008
This has to increase the odds that Jack Wilson becomes a Dodger.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Another reason you should try to trade your talent at the deadline if you’re not contending: you’ll lose a few more games and probably get a higher draft pick as a result.
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
True.
There’s a pretty good chance the Pirates end up getting only a fifth starter for Bay.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
I assume you think Brignac is going to bust?
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
I’m not guaranteeing it by any means, but he’s only got 1/2 of a BABIP fueled season of usefulness above A ball. He hasn’t really shown any ability to hit at higher levels, but he’s still young.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
The Pirates have gone into media silence mode.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Kevin Goldstein (12:30:50 PM PT): LeverettB24 (Boston, MA): If you were the Red Sox, wouldn’t you take Kemp for Manny?
We have about 129 variations of this question in the que. This deal is not available. I repeat. This deal is not available.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
I just sent that same thing to my brother. There was just a collective groan in Boston.
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
Why do the Jays want Ibanez? Can anyone explain that one?
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
Who’s their DH right now?
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Matt Stairs?
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
John Heyman saying a “prospects” for Manny deal being worked on.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
How many outfielders does Ned Colletti want? That would make Manny, Kemp, Pierre, Jones, Ethier. This is ridiculous.
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
I like having five outfielders myself.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Does Colletti think this is little league, where you have one guy in Left-center field, and another guy in right-center field?
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
Think of how much Ethier and Kemp will improve our bench.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
That’s a good point. We’d have the best bench ever.
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
This has to be pyschological, but I’m getting stomach cramps and chills after that sushi.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Tapeworms!
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
Bay apparently not being traded to the Rays. Freidman’s being a wuss.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
I think you do this deal. I was hesitant about giving up Brignac because Bartlett is nothing great, but he’s good enough to be a stopgap for awhile longer.

Agreed. Brignac’s still at least a year away. He’s overwhelmed by AAA pitching right now. You can always pickup glove first shortstops as cheap filler anyway.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Well, that’s time. Half hour or so for everything to get announced.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
What a boring deadline. They really need to move the deadline back up to midnight EST. Those were always fun.
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
Things are still going past Bud’s desk, so we can still see some stuff.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Will Carroll (1:16:07 PM PT): Is it too early for mojitos? Is it ever too early for mojitos?
Will Carroll is a girl unless he’s in a cabana right now.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Is drinking a mojito just like eating a mint?
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
A really sweet limey one.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
I just remembered Will Carroll occasionally reads this site.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
I’m facebook friends with Will Carroll.

Phil Gurnee - July 31, 2008
Oh Crap
Will Carroll (1:22:15 PM PT): Manny to Dodgers?
Will Carroll (1:22:51 PM PT): Yep, I have two sources on this one, plus Jon Heyman. NO idea on particulars.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
DAMN IT!
Rot in hell, Colletti!
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
I’m just assuming we’re going to get hosed on this deal, so excuse me for my early tirade.
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
Whoa.
Carlos (Los Angeles): Sports Illustrated is reporting that Manny Ramirez was traded to the Dodgers. Can you confirm?
TJ (Washington, DC): Rob- MLB.com is reporting Bay to the DODGERS

Andrew - July 31, 2008
Now I’m reading it was a 3-way, with Bay going to the Red Sox.
Tango and Cash - July 31, 2008
Now it’s Bay to Boston in a three way deal.
Andrew - July 31, 2008

Bay to the Sox, Manny to us, four prospects of various origin to the Pirates now.
I’d rather have Bay.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
glad laroche is still here. will next year finally be the year he gets his shot?
CSon - July 31, 2008
I’m sure LaRoche is still considered a prospect to the media.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
May not be here
Things got interesting. Does anyone think a Manny/Kent clubhouse could be one serious firecracker in Sept.
I’d rather have Bay also.
Phil Gurnee - July 31, 2008
LaRoche and Bryan Morris gone.
Andrew - July 31, 2008
Has to be an outfielder included
Phil Gurnee - July 31, 2008
