Those Damn Diamondbacks

I was about to make a post celebrating the demise of the Diamondbacks when I got word that Orlando Hudson was out for the season, and they'd be replacing him with some combination of Chris Burke and Augie Ojeda. Since God apparently decided that I can never be happy though, the Diamondbacks had to go out and get themselves Adam Dunn for 23 year old A ball pitcher Dallas Buck and two other players. Since Buck is already 23 and struck out a whopping 4.77 per nine in a league he's way too old for, it's safe to call that nothing. Hopefully the two yet to be named guys are someone useful.

How the hell does Adam Dunn clear waivers? How do we not make the claim just to block them? At least part of this is on Ned.

Additional question: is there any reason why every team wouldn't put a claim on a type A free agent?

Update>>It's Buck and two players to be named later for Dunn, so it looks like the Diamondbacks got Dunn for nothing.

And the Diamondbacks aren't even paying all of Dunn's salary.

What makes this even worse

is that the two draft picks they’ll get for letting Dunn walk will be better than the two PTBNL they gave up.

The Diamondbacks management is just so much better than the Dodgers.

Do the players on the 40 man have to clear waivers if they are part of this trade?

Yep, but if they’re PBTNL they can’t be on the 40 man anyway.

Pretty much the only way this is a good idea is if they get Jarrod Parker back (he requires PBTNL shenanigans since he signed last year), but I don’t see the Diamondbacks doing that.

Someone on Reds Reporter said the D-Backs have already said Parker isn’t in the deal.

Well, then the Reds are dumb.

Off topic: it’s pretty fun to have Pandora what you like in songs. I apparently enjoy basic rock structures, a subtle use of vocal harmony, mild rhythmic syncopation, intricate melodic phrasing, and mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation.

I think every song I like has a subtle use of vocal harmony. I wonder what that says about me.

Arizona’s new Jackson/Young/Dunn outfield should be pretty entertaining at least.

Upton should be back soon, then Reynolds/Tracy becomes a part time player.

So we should enjoy it while it lasts.

Tracy sits

long before Reynolds does. Trace can’t really hit LH pitching, and Reynolds has more power. Defensively, Tracy is only slightly better.

I thought Tracy was a trainwreck defensively.

He's improved a bit over time,

and he’s much better at 1B than 3B. He’s better at reaching to his right than his left. But he’s not really anything to speak of defensively, no.

He WAS coming around nicely

until Clark came back

Great move

by the Diamondbacks. Looks like Ned was asleep on this one, I’m with Andrew, I don’t see how any team would not claim Dunn given the two draft picks they would be getting. Are teams afraid to get draft picks because of the bonus money involved? It is not like these are prime picks, they either have to be after pick 15 or sandwich picks and the bonus demands are not that big a deal by that point.

Would love to see the Diamondbacks put Reynolds at 2nd, it is no different then when we were campaigning for LaRoche to move to 2nd. What an offense with Jackson, Reynolds, Drew, Tracy, Upton, Young, Dunn. Actually not great, but it will get the job done. It would be the perfect team for JoeyP to see if defense is greatly overrated. On days that Webb pitches they play Ojeda and sit either Tracy or Reynolds depending on the handedness of the pitcher.

It is funny hearing Dodger fans saying that Dunn is no big deal because of his lousy defense while at the same time saying that Manny is our savior. If we had gotten Dunn for nothing, we’d be stoked.

Too bad Colletti is probably exactly alike Jocketty; both hate Dunn because he hits for a low average and K’s a lot.

re;

Mark McGwire??? What makes you think Jocketty hates Dunn? It was Riccardi saying all those stupid things.

That’s pretty much my thinking. I’d have no reservations about the Manny deal if we got him for this package.

I can laugh about the Reynolds idea because I never wanted to move Andy to second.

I just don’t see how else you can explain this trade without coming to that conclusion, unless you come to the conclusion that Jocketty doesn’t know what he’s doing, which doesn’t seem to be the case. A few people at BP have said that Ricciardi wasn’t the only person who thought that about Dunn.

Did he also hate Griffey?

He works for a cheap owner and was told to dump his salaries which he did. I would be the last person to say that Jocketty doesn’t know what he’s doing and I think he’s to smart to do anything based on personal feelings.

I’m not sure what to think of Jocketty. He left the Cardinal’s farm system bone dry, but he pulled off some amazing trades.

The thing is that Griffey wasn’t going to be any use to the Reds next year. Right now as far as I can tell there’s one useful outfielder in the organization. The Reds needed to re-sign Dunn if they wanted to be a contending team in the near future.

You are right

the are extremely light in the outfield headed into 2009.

That’s when Lindner owned the team. Castellini actually intends to increase payroll, so unless he’s lying (and he might be), this doesn’t make any sense. Plus, the Reds are paying part of the salaries of both Griffey (about 4 million) and Dunn (either half, 2 mil, or full, 4 million). I don’t think this has anything to do with money. This has to do with Jocketty making a baseball decision.

Wily Aybar

it is your time to shine.

How do the Dodgers let Dunn slip through waivers???

I still just do not get it. Knowing that the Dbacks needed a power hitter, how does Colletti let Dunn get through waivers? You just GOTTA put a claim in as a defensive measure. Even if they let him go, then we have the ML leading home run hitter as a great bat off the bench!

Owings

Couldn’t one of the PTBNL’s be Owings? He’s in the minors, and the PTBNL status would keep him from being claimed on waivers.

Anyone on the 40 man has to clear waivers.

Owings

It is Owings, per two links on MLBTR. Here: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/08/dunn-traded-to.html#comments

Fortunately you guys are wrong. You just can’t be in the same league at the time of the trade. And he doesn’t have to clear waivers because he is a PTBNL, so he won’t be “named:” until after the season, when he doesn’t have to be cleared.

I think this is good news for us. The Diamondbacks at least had to give up a fairly significantpiece. I don’t really see this as a bad trade for the Reds for less than 2 months of Dunn.

Micah Owings

and AAA catcher Wilkin Castillo
