The experts did not see the huge command gains or the ERA drop that goes with it.
TBLA members expected great things from Clayton but only a few took it to the level Clayton took it.
I think Josie wins this:
ERA: 2.251
WHIP: -1
IP: 203
Ks: 215
W-L: 20-3Kershaw is Aces. I once saw Kershaw pull a woman from a burning building, that he set on fire, just to test himself.
Dodgerblue looks good
IP-215
ERA-2.85
WHIP-1.03
Ks-230
19-6A bit of a stretch but I can wish can’t I?
Mammoth nails Cy Young
ERA: 2.69
WHIP: 1.078
IP: 219
Cy Young: 1Hating the Giants for going on a half century and counting!
Musicfan did offer much but just about nailed the win / loss
All-star

Yours Truly
ERA 2.49
WHIP 1.04
IP 232
K 219

Am I nuts, I think my prediction was pretty close.
Ivdown - January 13, 2012
Post it, if wins were below 18 or ERA above 2.60 I cut it off.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Looks like I didn't even try for the win loss record
Ivdown - January 13, 2012
Ivdown - January 13, 2012
Yes, you should have been mentioned. Excellent job
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
I had no clue you had him with such a great season
I always thought I was on the highest side of his projections.
Ivdown - January 13, 2012
2.55 ERA – 2.28
1.10 WHIP – 0.98
235 strikeouts – 248
222.2 Innings – 233.1
75 Walks – 54
170 Hits – 174
Kershaw outshined my predictions, nothing better than that :)
Ivdown - January 13, 2012
I don’t know what your prediction was, but I will say that
Yes, you are nuts
Hollywood Joe - January 13, 2012
good point, that is a given, lol
Ivdown - January 13, 2012
Crazy, they’ve been debating the Clippers playing under Lakers banners debate, and if Clippers would dare hang a division champion banner next to the 16 world championship banners… they must read TBLA.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
oops, on ESPN 710, 1st Max and Marcellus, and now on Ireland and Mason.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
The idea of a Clipper Division winner is new, expect all sorts of bizarre conversations. They might want to wait until 50 games are played
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
A Laker win tonight
would mean that tomorrow would either mean a virtual tie for first place or the Lakers and Clippers with the same number of losses but the Lakers would have twice as many wins as the Clippers.
bhsportsguy - January 13, 2012
I think we have a back to back to back next week to start making up for the easier schedule.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
It doesn't even out until
March but it will.
bhsportsguy - January 13, 2012
I’d hang a division winning banner, but would probably draw the more likely line of hanging a #7 seed banner.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
you cant hang no division banner, this is LA… this aint Sacramento… Dodgers dont even hang division banners. I dont think.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Not to metion Ive always though of winning a division in basketball as pretty meaningless… Ive never felt YEAH! We won the pacific division!!
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
We aren’t you, a Division win would be big in our world.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
How big though?? Would it really be that big? it would look pretty hilarious next to 16 championship banners…. I think you guys should wait til you win the whole thing… it will be that much sweeter.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
not everything is a dick measuring contest chris
nolander - January 13, 2012
well it should be…. im not saying its a dick measuring contest…. im just saying a division banner shouldnt be raised in the NBA, for anyone…. but nobody cares what I think…. Lakers fans will have fun with it though when the commercials play “Come out and see your Clippers raise the 2011-12 Pacific Division Banner” Ofcourse you guys dont care what Laker fans say either.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
There will be a ring ceremony too. Don’t forget that.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
I thought your filter eliminated Clippers chat.
Michael White - January 13, 2012
I replaced it with “watch” in the previous thread. :)
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
Michael, relax man, I feel like you are getting defensive as in im bashing the Clippers and im not, its just conversation and opinions.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
this isnt about who has what about of titles, or Clippers and Lakers, its about if raising a division banner in the NBA is worth it.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Well, the answer is yes
It’s PR 101. Anything good that happens to the team/company should be marketed
mleadman - January 13, 2012
Then why dont the Celtics have division banners raised??
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
You know the answer
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Because they suck at PR
mleadman - January 13, 2012
haha, mleadman is funny.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Hey Chris...
As Lakers fans, we must practice “noblesse oblige”. Not every fanbase is privileged to have grown up rooting for the Lakers. There are different goals for every organization. There was a time in the 1960s when Celtics fans looked down their noses at lowly Lakers fans, who had the misfortune of seeing their team annually come just short of a championship. Old Brooklyn Dodger fans know the feeling.
Just because the Lakers have had the fortune of sustained success over a long period of time doesn’t mean we get to set the parameters of success for every other franchise.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
I’m jealous of this ability to properly articulate an intelligent thought.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Thanks, Phil!
Sometimes I’ll close my eyes and swing as hard as I can, and amazingly, the ball will find the bat!
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012

Maddz - January 14, 2012
Well, you managed OK just now.
berkowit28 - January 13, 2012
Or what if Clippers win the division, but Lakers win the championship, then what??? that would be crazy. But for real, then what?
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
We’ll all find someway to persevere, some how, some way.
Michael White - January 13, 2012
no, I meant would Clippers still raise division banner then? would you still want division banner raised??
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Who the fuck cares
Michael White - January 13, 2012
Dam man, you are getting way too emotional about this…. why?
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
You’re like an 8 year old who keeps asking questions. Why? What if? Then what? It’s driving me crazy.
Michael White - January 13, 2012
Its not driving anyone else crazy, or they arent going all crazy about it… if you cant handle it, dont be involved then. Others seem to be ok with it…. if nobody answers my questions, then I will know that nobody cares.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
people are tired of telling you they find you annoying
nolander - January 13, 2012
ha ha
but yeah Chris you have taken this to an annoying place.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
ok its done.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
if it annoys people, why do they respond then? thats what I dont get. when nobody responds to what I say, then I get the hint that nobody cares… but if they do respond, I take it as they do care.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
My guess is that after a while it comes across as trolling. And trolling does usually incite responses. Just keep in mind I am not complaining. Clipper talk > Watch talk imo.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
I find Clipper talk only topped by Dodger talk
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Seems like TBLA could easily spin off a half dozen or so IPO blogs for SBN. Just winging it here…

by the way, one more thing, I ask alot of questions because I respect the sports knowledge alot of you guys have, or knowledge in general, and like to pick your brain to increase my sports knowledge. Or to get a different perspective of how a fan of another team thinks.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Ha, I don’t believe you give one iota what other fans think. It is a way of asking and then telling us how the great Laker fans do it as a way of reminding us that we root for a franchise with little history of success and even if we have some success this year it does not mean squat in your eyes.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
I’ll admit things I say will come off with an arrogance that lets you know my team rules! But I dont ask things im not interested in knowing the answer to. I really think alot of you guys are very smart with sports, and more. Much smarter then me in some areas lol, and I come here to raise my game, the best I can.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
anyways, if possible, if im being annoying, or u dont give a shit, just dont respond, then I know nobody is interested in talking about it, I move on.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
So how do you Clipper fans handle being so pathetic compared to the mighty Laker juggernaut? Does this brief moment of success make up for decades of failure? I’m just asking questions.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
ha, come on man, its not that bad… if it is, im sorry, because now I see it.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
I'll second this...
The sports banter here on TBLA is far superior than any other community I frequent. My coworker just moved here from Ohio and is a die-hard Reds fan. I was relaying information from TBLA about potential Reds prospects for trade, and he was astounded that Dodger fans were so knowledgeable.
I’m a member of a SBNation college site where dissent is not allowed. The moderators ban members who they deem to not toe the company line. You guys are awesome. Stay Gold!

Nobody is saying that.
Eric Stephen - January 13, 2012
well
nolander - January 13, 2012
Then somehow Dwight Howard and Deron Williams ended up Lakers
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Sure we do. I especially care that if the Clippers do win the Western Division Championship that Laker fans can relish the fact they get to pay twice as much for a ticket to watch an inferior team.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Exactly. Chris, did it sink in that if the Clippers have a West Div banner, that means they bettered the Lakers?
David Young - January 13, 2012
Did Clipper tix
go up this year? Or did the strike kill any price hike across the board?
mleadman - January 13, 2012
In 2001 my ticket was $40, in 2011 my ticket is $50
In 2001 my Laker ticket was $70, in 2011 my Laker ticket is $120
My Clipper seats are 20 rows closer.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Let them raise whatever banners they want
As a UCLA fan, I revel in pointing out that only NCAA championship banners are hung in Pauley Pavilion, unlike at North Carolina and Kentucky, where everything from conference titles to Sweet 16s to NIT championship find their way onto the rafters.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
They can burn the division banner when they put up the championship banner. That felt wierd typing.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
that would be fine… but as far as I know once a banner goes up, it never comes down.. but maybe.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Yet another LOL Clippers post.
Get off it already.
Michael White - January 13, 2012

Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
I’m talking about the Clippers.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
I know you are talking about the Clippers
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
When you have never won one, I think you can hang one.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
The Kings have their banners from the 90s. Conn Smythe trophy, shit like that. I think it’s comparable.
Michael White - January 13, 2012
Conn Smythe trophy is the Stanley Cup MVP??… we have had that? or you mean western conference champs?
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Uh, guess it wasn’t Conn Smythe then. I thought the divisions used to have names like that (before they changed it to geographical terms.)
Michael White - January 13, 2012
I think the Kings were in the Smythe Division of the Campbell Confrence.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
There we go. Thanks.
Michael White - January 13, 2012
yeah I believe they do… well, I still dont agree with the division thing… But a West Conference champion banner I suppose is more accpetable.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
I miss the old NHL Division names
I always thought there was something regal about Smythe, Patrick, Adams, Norris, Campbell, and Wales.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012

The Ottoman Conference
would be awesome. Also Ming and Visigoth
mleadman - January 13, 2012
I went through a phase where I was obsessed about the Ottoman empire. Read everything I could get my hands on. This came after my Byzantine phase so I guess it was a natural progression.
Michael White - January 13, 2012
I never got into it that much. I would much rather put my feet up and relax.
Eric Stephen - January 13, 2012
I thought the ruler of the Ottoman Empire was Dick Van Dyke. He sure ended up showing who was the boss.

ah, yes, I remember the alternate opening now : )

mleadman - January 13, 2012

David Young - January 13, 2012
Clippers Division/Conference Banners?
The Clippers should be able to hang whatever banner they see fit because Staples is their arena too. I don’t think they should put it on the same wall as the Lakers though, or do ALL banners have to go there? I know the Kings and Sparks also have banners on the wall, so if they must, at least make it bigger than the Sparks banner but smaller than the Lakers title banners.
If the Clippers win the title, they deserve a full-size banner. I wonder if the Clippers have a title banner design chilling in the front office hard drive?

Thank you, I'm saving this picture.
In 1989, I played my first year of organized baseball. My team, the Giants (UGH!), was terrible. We were winless going into the last game of the season, and the manager gave me the ball to try to salvage what was left of our 9-year old pride. I ended up going the distance (no pitching limits back then), and when I struck out the last batter, I knelt on one knee just like my idol Bulldog in the 1988 NLCS. If it weren’t for Orel capturing my 8 year-old heart, I wouldn’t be the fan I am today.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012

I didn’t predict Kershaw correctly for two reasons.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
what are those reasons
Ivdown - January 13, 2012
Ah, glad somebody took the bait.
1. It means my prediction system is sane.
2. It means Kershaw had an incredible season.

haha, thanks. Actually I tread pretty lightly over at MCC. Their team. Their blog. Try to add something team related.

I’m likely someone who will ask it :)
Projections for pitchers always seem too low, much more so than for hitters i’ve noticed.

Eric – based on the time frame we started these previews last year we have about a month to go before they start. Yikes, I can’t wait to write about this team.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Kershaw, Kemp, Jansen, Lindbom, Elbert, Loney, Ethier, and Billingsley
The only previews I can think of right now that would feel at all optimistic about.

you write one for Jerry Hairston and it can pretty much get C&P’d to all of the FA signings this season.
EMDarrow - January 13, 2012
Yeah, I was working out the schedule earlier this week. I’ll email you guys. I think February 13 or so will be the start date.
Eric Stephen - January 13, 2012
I’m looking forward to it too.
Michael White - January 13, 2012
TBLA will be in ruins by then.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
Or Bruins.
berkowit28 - January 13, 2012
UFC talk
Anthony Johnson missed weight. By 11 pounds.
ELEVEN!
Now I hope Vitor beats him down.
fbihop - January 13, 2012
Heavy or light? Isn’t he coming up a weight class?
Michael White - January 13, 2012
11 pounds heavy, moved up from welterweight to middleweight. I bet he just thought it would be easier to cut and didn’t work at it as hard as he had.
But, yeah, if he get knocked out, he might be looking for a new place to fight.
fbihop - January 13, 2012
They’ll still let them fight with that much of a weight disparity? I guess it’s overseas, but I didn’t think that would get sanctioned.
Michael White - January 13, 2012
In boxing it would have to be called off, or made a non-title fight, no belt at stake. Would it be the same in UFC?
David Young - January 13, 2012
Johnson loses 20% of his purse and Belfort had to agree to go on with the fight.
fbihop - January 13, 2012
What I’m concerned about is that Rumble knew he was gonna miss weight, knew no one ever backs out because their opponent missed weight, so he just said fuck it and decided to not cut most of the way. So he’ll come in mostly healthy and just slaughter Vitor.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
That’s why it makes sense for the title not to be at stake. (Is it belts in UFC?)
David Young - January 13, 2012
It is belts. This was non-title to begin with.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
Yeah, since he was so far off, he probably just said, “fuck it.”
If they miss by a pound or two it usually means they worked as hard as possible to cut down there but didn’t quite make it so are way drained.
In this case, however…
Vitor has fought at heavier weights, though, so it won’t be completely new to him.
fbihop - January 13, 2012
Ya, Johnson would have had to be walking around at 225 a few weeks ago to fully cut and still be off this much.
Says the guy who’s never cut weight in his life.
Michael White - January 13, 2012
Fighting Rumble vs. Walking Around Rumble
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
I guarantee Johnson will never take a fight on short notice.
fbihop - January 13, 2012
Maybe he does walk around at 225….
Michael White - January 13, 2012
There was footage of him training for this fight and he’s way bigger than Rashad Evans.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
I saw that. I bet Rashad could make middleweight.
fbihop - January 13, 2012
Totally, he’s one of the smaller guys at LHW.
Rumbles going with “I got sick this morning and the doctors made me drink fluids otherwise I totally would have made weight” as an excuse. Could be true, could be his body telling him don’t try to cut 40 pounds, dummy.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
Yeah, if he stayed in some sort of shape, besides pear-shaped, between fights, he would have made it easily.
fbihop - January 13, 2012
my boss is currently trying to make weight for his bjj competition at the end of the month.
Training with him sucks.
Maddz - January 14, 2012
I thought you only miss a weight by being heavy. If you want to fight way under the limit, that’s your prerogative.
David Young - January 13, 2012
I assumed that’s what he meant, just surprised since he’d been fighting at WW
Michael White - January 13, 2012
There is a minimum weight; Dan Henderson weighed in at 207 when he fought against Fedor — 1 pound over the minimum.
So I ASSUME that means the minimum is 1 lb over the next lightest class but can’t find confirmation anywhere.
fbihop - January 13, 2012
This is true.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
I'm guessing its a safety thing eh?
nolander - January 13, 2012
Yeah. Doesn’t apply in Japan, though.
fbihop - January 13, 2012
Why do I have to be told how many followers fbi has?
berkowit28 - January 13, 2012
It’s a measuring contest.
David Young - January 13, 2012
For those of you interested in such things
Clayton Kershaw will be signing copies of his new book Sunday at the Ralph’s in Porter Ranch / Chatsworth (on Rinaldi).

Porter Ranch is in Chatsworth?!?!??! I had no idea. When I think of Chatsworth, I think of the pr0n industry. Is Porter Ranch a gentrified section?
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
They live above the smell of the Northern San Fernando Valley and risk being blown away every day
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Pretty much. And a 5 degree break from the heat too.
David Young - January 13, 2012
Porter Ranch is Northridge. The store is kinda where Northridge and Chatsworth border.
David Young - January 13, 2012
Thanks!
My only forays into the SFV were the old illegal drag races on Saticoy and in Sylmar.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
if you live in Porter Ranch, your mail doesnt say Porter Ranch right? Says Northridge? So Porter Ranch isnt an official city I guess… shit I asked too many questions.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
I send a holiday card every year to my friend in Porter Ranch. It’s a place. So is Playa Vista.
kinbote - January 13, 2012
Northridge is not a city, but an official community of the city of Los Angeles, as is Porter Ranch. Northridge is also a post office “area” of some sort. The Porter Ranch post office is for the Northridge zip code of 91326. The post office says you can address letters to 91326 as either Porter Ranch or Northridge.
David Young - January 13, 2012
Or Los Angeles
Michael White - January 13, 2012
Yes. As long as it says Los Angeles your mail will get there.
iiidown - January 13, 2012
I thought Porter Ranch is on its own, and Chatsworth and Northridge are below, maybe a section of Granada Hills too.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
or maybe Granada Hills is to the right of Porter Ranch.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Chatsworth tried to hang a banner in Porter Ranch but it blew away
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
ROFLMAO
I hope this becomes a new TBLA meme.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
haha…funny, you older guys, you, marty, Btimm are freakin funny as hell man….
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
I love you threw B Timm in there. He’ll be happy to know he’s added about 15 years:)
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
so he isnt old… I guess he just says he is old because he said he cant stand drunk people at Dodger Stadium around him, and I said its because he is old… and he does work at a library from what I know.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
2 yrs older than me, so very old
Hollywood Joe - January 13, 2012

Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012

uschris0304 - January 13, 2012

how is this not green?!
Maddz - January 14, 2012

Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012

Hollywood Joe - January 13, 2012
you trolling the SBNation search engine?
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012

Hollywood Joe - January 13, 2012
Yeah, I don’t get that. Don’t any one care about proving someone wrong about something they said six months ago?
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
When there is the google domain search as a nice workaround, meh.
David Young - January 13, 2012
that was one of the better Fanposts.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
Wow! Haven’t heard that for awhile.
iiidown - January 13, 2012
ive always said if you just mind your own business, you wont be bothered… its when you get brave and start asking someone to stop that, or be quiet, that your problems begin.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
It is impossible to mind your own business when someone else is throwing shit at you.
David Young - January 13, 2012
I’ve always drawn the line at shit, peanuts I can handle, but not shit.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Roger would agree!
iiidown - January 13, 2012
I’ve always thought BTimm was stately.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
Btimm is the smartest guy I know… well dont know, but have seen on the internet… so dam smart… I dont get 75% of his jokes because I have no idea what he is talking about he is so dam smart.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Without his search engines he’s only the 3rd smartest fella on the internet.

uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
He never said he lived in Porter Ranch.
David Young - January 13, 2012
WE LOVE IT!
David Young - January 13, 2012
Dont think it blew away, more likely it was arrested for indecent exposure.
EMDarrow - January 13, 2012
Technically
Porter Ranch is one of the three or four zip codes for Northridge.
David Young - January 13, 2012
Chatsworth is the porn capital of the world… but I bet some of the scenes are shot in homes in Porter Ranch.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
So that’s where those houses are!
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
yeah, but I think the outdoor scenes by the pool where you see alot of huge ass boulders in the background are in Chatsworth… Thats like Chatsworth park or something, people like to climb those boulders,
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
…to get a better view of the filming no doubt.
EMDarrow - January 13, 2012
I thought he was talking about the girls
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Thats not climbing they’re doing with those boulders.
EMDarrow - January 13, 2012
well you do have to get a handhold

uschris0304 - January 13, 2012

There is a gym on Topanga Canyon and Nordoff?? or some street close to that where some of them work out… but I havent gone to see yet.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Nordoff / De Soto
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Powerhouse
Michael White - January 13, 2012
maybe that gym too, but there is another gym im thinking of… pretty sure topanga canyon was one of streets… my ex worked there and told me the ones working out there… but only one I see is Topanga Training and Fitness, and thats actually in Woodland hills
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Used to work in the building on the corner of Independence and Nordhoff. That gym was right behind us, and acroos the street was a porn production company. Girls in and out (literally) all day.
iiidown - January 13, 2012
right now im on prairie street and mason, im tempted to go on a porn star hunt.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
please do and tell us about it
Hollywood Joe - January 13, 2012
Arrowhead water?
David Young - January 13, 2012
haha nah man you asked that before… though that is right up the street on Mason, im more down Prairie street, at a fiber optics communications company….
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
I read an article about that once. I don’t think I want to use the mic after the porn stars have.
David Young - January 13, 2012
problem is
they keep dropping the mic all the way down their throats

I lived in the SFV for 10 years.
GScott was a South Bay guy for most of his life.

Btimm is Granada Hills alum too I believe.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
KENNEDY
Hollywood Joe - January 13, 2012
well yeah, went to Kennedy, but lived in granada hills, which Kennedy HS is in. Doesnt he live in Pasadena now?
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
All true but BTimm cannot be called a TBLA person. He never made the jump, he’s DT true and true. For some reason he seemed to take offense when I mocked his hatred of Florida. For a smart guy he has a lot of hatred.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
yeah he is like Jon’s side kick…. was it a loyalty thing??
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Unlike many, he did not feel the need to say fuck once in a while. Isn’t that why most of you are here?
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
FUCK YEAH!
David Young - January 13, 2012
I second the fuck yeah…. on of my 1st posts on DT was writing “Padilla is the opening day starter? wtf” He was like 1) using profanity or any euphemisms for profanity… seriously? I cant even write wtf?? and I dont even know what a euphernism is.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Its like kindergarden over there with all the rules haha… im jk, I love DT too, I dont wanna rag on DT, but the rules are too much.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
At least DT is trying to salvage
some respectability on the ESPN site. Those comment boards are the dregs of the sports internet.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
very true, the message boards are the worst of the worst… there are no good message boards anymore, thats why I go to blogs.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Bless your heart.
Nolij - January 13, 2012
On the last two sites that hosted Dodger Thoughts
Both the LA Times and ESPN will take down comments that use profanity or anything that can be interpreted as profanity.
Sure, it was Jon’s rule on Baseball Toaster about the profanity and he probably would have continued it at the next two sites but nevertheless those are and were the rules there.
bhsportsguy - January 13, 2012
I love Jon and his writing, he is a must read
the commenting format here is much better
and while we are all fools from time to time, some of us more than others, I could suffer some of the fools on the ESPN site no longer
Hollywood Joe - January 13, 2012
hey, arent I one of those fools? :)
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
He didn’t say they all stayed there.
Nolij - January 13, 2012
awww. thats mean :( haha
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
mostly
not
Hollywood Joe - January 13, 2012
Jon’s non-baseball stuff is my favorite. Don’t get me wrong, his baseball insight is awesome, but it’s when he infuses himself in his writing that he becomes so compelling to read.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
Also
The way he turns phrases reminds me of Jim Murray.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
DT Rules!
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
That's probably why I think he's stately...
I’ve never seen him curse.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
Bob is tall but he’s one of those tall people who does not seem comfortable being tall, he always seems to be holding back his height. So, not stately.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Or maybe he was just being kind to us shorties and didn’t feel the need to remind us that he towers over us mentally and height.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Stately, plump Buck Mulligan…
berkowit28 - January 13, 2012
well done
kinbote - January 13, 2012
Who never cursed? Btimm?? I thought he has cursed on twitter before?? Its Jon that I want to see cuss..come on Jon, tell me to shut the fuck up, give me 1 bad word. .. he seems too goody 2 shoes for me, but I guess thats how he is.
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Jon is a regular person with great talent who would tell you to fuck off in person but not on his board. He’d simply ask you to move over to TBLA.
I remember you on DT. You were annoying.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
oh ok, so its a professional thing…. fair enough… as long as he does say fuck in person haha
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
I guess some things never change
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Jon is a gentleman. Nothing less.

Jon wants his board to be somewhere his young children can go.
berkowit28 - January 13, 2012
A couple days ago, I copied a snippet of Lasorda’s Bevaqua rant and even edited out the curse words, but it got deleted anyways.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
I remember that, and he gave you the same rule 1 line…. you have a different name over there?
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Yeah… the.sports.dude.
I created my SBNation account and ESPN accounts at different times.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
No. When DT started migrating, its commenting software got so awful I couldn’t stand it. At LAT and then even worse at ESPN. Now it’s better but I spend more time here. Occasional fuck is OK but it’s not so occasional here. Lots of noise here, but fun. DT sometimes too prudish. Still, if I have something IMPORTANT to say, I’ll say it both places because I’d like Jon’s approval, or something.
berkowit28 - January 13, 2012
Gary doesn’t live in the South Bay anymore? Anyone else from the South Bay, in case we can carpool when I make my TBLA meet-up debut?
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
There are a few of us in Culver City. That might be the closest.
Nolij - January 13, 2012
Culver City
Do you consider Culver City the Westside?
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
Some consider anything West of
Downtown the Westside.
Me, I think West of the 405 or at least Overland Blvd.
bhsportsguy - January 13, 2012
What do you consider the southern border of the Westside? LAX?
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
Actually
for West LA, I tend to think to Venice or maybe MDR. LAX is it’s own thing. South Bay begins on Rosecrans.
bhsportsguy - January 13, 2012
The 90 works for me. Keeps me on the Westside instead of unincorporatedville.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
If you are unincorporated, wouldn’t that make you MDR basically?
David Young - January 13, 2012
I thought you were in
Santa Monica
bhsportsguy - January 13, 2012
MDR for roughly a month more then who knows.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
So, Jefferson?
Nolij - January 13, 2012
Poor El Segundo
All on its own.
David Young - January 13, 2012
Venice for me as well. Anything south and I think South Bay
Michael White - January 13, 2012
I live south of Venice and I am definitely not in the South Bay.
Nolij - January 13, 2012
South
I’ve always defined the South Bay as El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
I always thought of South Bay as the San Jose area. Was confused when I heard people from LA talking about it. I thought where the hell is this bay at? Bob T told me to look at a map. Yeah, I guess there is a little indentation or curve in the coast line but a bay? I don’t know about you but I hold my bay standards a little bit higher than that, it will always be nothing more than a bight to me. So who here lives in the South Bight area?
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
It's LA
We turn small things into the biggest things in the world. I believe there’s clinical definition for this type of complex, but since I’m native, I don’t give a flying F what outsiders think.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012

Eli vs Rodgers
first time 2 super bowl mvps will have ever faced each other in the playoffs
nolander - January 13, 2012
Wow, that's pretty cool
Even though fuck Eli.
Ivdown - January 13, 2012
you are just pissed because he is making all your proclamations about him not being good
look silly
nolander - January 13, 2012
I'm just pissed because of the 2007-2008 playoffs
He screwed the Packers (my favorite team) then the Patriots (who I wanted to destroy the Giants after). He’s been on my shit list ever since.
Ivdown - January 13, 2012
Hey Josie!
Who’s your EPL team? I’ve been getting into the EPL more now that I have the Fox Soccer channel.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
excellent
I support Manchester United for three reasons 1) they’re the easiest club to follow cause their games are always on TV 2) they feature in two of my favorite Brit shows: State of Play and Life of Mars 3) They win a lot.
Josie Becker - January 13, 2012
Being a Dodger fan, I’ve gravitated toward Arsenal because of the similarities between the two organizations: strong tradition, most of the success happened generations ago, and we both believe we still belong with today’s elite.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
And you get to say “Tee-air-ee On-ree”
Nolij - January 13, 2012
you can get that supporting the New York Red Bulls
Josie Becker - January 13, 2012
Arsenal is my second favorite. Never been relegated in over a hundred years, strong tradition, both Arsenal and ManU are traditionally catholic clubs, and always a threat to win even if yeah, not a shoe in as in past years. Have you watched Fever Pitch? It’s a must if you’re considering Arsenal
Josie Becker - January 13, 2012
I’m going to have to watch the original Fever Pitch, not that Red Sox abomination.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
I’m glad you told me that Arsenal is a traditional Catholic club! I love rivalries… Dodgers-Giants, UCLA-USC, Lakers-Celtics, and especially Catholic-Protestant.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
I don't know why
but the Catholic – Protestant thing made me laugh
bhsportsguy - January 13, 2012
ManU-Liverpool is the bigger rivalry. (I’m a Liverpool supporter)
Nolij - January 13, 2012
I liked Liverpool’s Carlsberg shirts better than the ones they have now. I also like Barca more when they had UNICEF on the front instead of Qatar Foundation. I hope that doesn’t make me racist.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
It most certainly makes you racist and a blight on the human race
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
HA!
I just find UNICEF more benevolent to the world as a whole, more so than the Qatar Foundation, which is more regional.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
not a fan of falconry?
nolander - January 13, 2012
I believe Arsenal biggest rivals
are:
Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.
bhsportsguy - January 13, 2012
Spurs traditional and historical rivals. Chelsea are johnnny-come-latelys (to Arsenal). Except to Fulham. Very ancient rivalry there.
berkowit28 - January 13, 2012
you can root for Arsenal with K3vo

The last two are Castle and Tolleson
silverwidow - January 13, 2012
I was afraid that was Castle.
Nolij - January 13, 2012
Tolleson looks high
mleadman - January 13, 2012
Tolleson is the guy all the way to the right? Then yes, he is indeed high.

Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
At least Phil didn't put up this pix

Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Castle looks like Lugo so I don’t like him already. Plus he looks like an infielder. He also looks weak.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012

Michael White - January 13, 2012

Aaron Sorkin’s dialogue is nonpareil.

Now I want Sno-Caps.
Nolij - January 13, 2012
hahaha
Maddz - January 14, 2012
It was interesting to me
because most of the dialog didn’t scream Sorkin to me. It lacked his usual rapid fire style.
nolander - January 13, 2012
very true
Sorkin was demonstrating he’s got more tricks in his bag.
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012

nolander - January 13, 2012
Kinda like Art Howe.
Nolij - January 13, 2012
Or it was “overcasting”.
David Young - January 13, 2012
He was a dead ringer for Art Howe though.
EMDarrow - January 13, 2012
What does it matter? Jonah Hill as “Peter Brand” not really like DePodesta at all.
David Young - January 13, 2012
well
for one arte howe’s character in the movie was likely not an amalgamation of multiple real people, but just based one the one.
nolander - January 13, 2012
No more so than “Peter Brand” really being DePodesta. Brand isn’t primarily an amalgamation either.
David Young - January 13, 2012
Looks like a dude you’d give up for two months of Rafael Furcal.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
I thought Wood and the Cubs were done with eachother? Who gave in?
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
The Mariners have moved closer to a trade that would net them a “young impact hitter,” reports ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick. A source calls the trade “significant” and says Brandon League is not part of the deal (both links via Twitter).
uschris0304 - January 13, 2012
Since It's Slow
Crasnick
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
Votto for Felix???
silverwidow - January 13, 2012
Not worth it for the Mariners to get someone for two years at this point.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
This says Pineda is going to me. Montero? Bruce? Joey Votto and Yasmani Grandal?
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
Grandal is a Padre tho
silverwidow - January 13, 2012
Damn that joke doesn’t work any more.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
I hope they do better then Smoak this time. Or not I’d rather they stink.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
I would trade Felix before Pineda. Not that I think he is better, just that he is cost controlled and the Mariners aren’t sniffing the playoffs for a while. But I’d make sure I got something good and cost controlled back for Felix. Then again it is #6Org. They are due for a good trade though, or at least one that works out for them.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
I’m just trying to think of teams that would be in a position to take on Felixs contract and have a good young hitter to deal and I’m coming up blank.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
Ethier for Felix, bro. Book it.
silverwidow - January 13, 2012
Gordon for Pineda
nolander - January 13, 2012
Eovaldi for Smoak
silverwidow - January 13, 2012
Might work, I think Gordon already hitting arb might be a deal breaker though. Hosmer might jive a little better.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
I thought you meant Dee Gordon here. :)
silverwidow - January 13, 2012
I did :)
nolander - January 13, 2012
Was wondering when someone would say this lol
Tommy Blackjack - January 13, 2012 via iPhone app
Felix
per b-ref.
2012 26 Seattle Mariners $18,500,000
2013 27 Seattle Mariners $19,500,000
2014 28 Seattle Mariners $20,000,000
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
Yankees?
Montero and Banelous(sp?)
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
Like the deal, the Yankees seem to be serious about this not crossing the luxury tax threshold though.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
Felix for Hanley
Hanley plays SS for Seattle. Salaries come fairly close to matching.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
Wow
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
That’s just a guess.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
How about on smaller scale
Pineda for Morrison, Dominquez, and speedy guy
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Is Ned Colletti’s clone the GM in Seattle?
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
Not seeing it.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
If the Indians really don’t think Santana can stick at catcher Pineda for Santana then signing Carlos Pena makes a lot of sense.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
Pineda for Billy Butler
Pineda for Adam Jones
Pineda for Santana
Pineda for Belt and fast dude
Pineda for Rasmus / Snider / Lind
Pineda for Moustakas / Meyer
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Pineda for Posey
Pineda for McCutchen
Pineda for Jason Heyward
silverwidow - January 13, 2012
You racheted it up a notch over my group
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Why stop there? Pineda for Stanton. Pineda for Bryce Harper.
Nolij - January 13, 2012
Speaking of Stanton
How did we not draft the local product?
ishXdavid - January 13, 2012
Try not to think about it. That way lies madness.
Tommy Blackjack - January 13, 2012 via iPhone app
Failure at every level from scouting to drafting, going with low ceiling college soft tosser. Other teams also failed, other teams did not have him in their backyard.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012

nolander - January 13, 2012

Ethier and Capang for Felix/Pineda/Smoak
silverwidow - January 13, 2012
10 TBLA points, redeemable to your local Chuckie Cheese for the most correct guess (limit three guesses).
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
Trayvon Robinson for Jeff Mathis
Chone Figgins for Juan Uribe
Chone Figgins for Loney
Nolij - January 13, 2012
and Nolij sets the bar nice and low for us. :)
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
I didn’t read “significant” as “game-changing.”
Nolij - January 13, 2012
just as “warm body”?
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
Pineda for Trumbo
nolander - January 13, 2012
or Kendry
nolander - January 13, 2012
Steal of the century for the Angels on both of these.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
If Angels involved I’d think it would have to be Pineda for Trout / Trumbo
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
angels will throw in vernon wells free of charge
nolander - January 13, 2012
within the same division? Would be gutsy.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012

silverwidow - January 13, 2012

Was one of the youngest players in AAA this year and was damn amazing the last two months. Then went to the bigs and raked.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
ah ok I guess I missed his last couple months
because before that hadn’t he not really done anything for a year and a half?
nolander - January 13, 2012
.289/.353/.517 as possibly the youngest player in AAA in 2010.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
And not in the interplanetary league.
David Young - January 13, 2012
Montero loses some of his luster if he is nothing more than a DH. I wouldn’t trade Pineda for just him. Get the young minor league pitcher too.

montero is traded for pineda

Tommy Blackjack - January 13, 2012
Well that solves the problem of not having anywhere to put Montero.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
That boom you heard Dave Camerons head exploding.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
He likes the idea if not the execution. Thinks they should [maybe] move now to replace Pineda (with E-Jax?] which is cheaper than Fielder would’ve been.
kinbote - January 13, 2012
But Pineda and Fielder is several wins better than Jackson and Montero.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
Also mentioned Oswalt as a one year stop gap then flip him at the deadline for a prospect then go after one of the many big gun FA pitchers next off season.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
Montero likely goes to DH and hits 5th. Noesi likely #4 or #5 starter.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
nolander - January 13, 2012
Edwin Jackson

bhsportsguy - January 13, 2012
they need more then 1

nolander - January 13, 2012
Yeah, but at least the word is they don’t want to add much payroll.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
Though if they do, they do need a DH now and Prince still needs a home…
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
so a trade that makes neither team happy
does that mean it was a good trade?
nolander - January 13, 2012
would neither team be happy?
Tommy Blackjack - January 13, 2012
apparently lookout landing and the yankee sbnation site are both up in arms
nolander - January 13, 2012
nolander - January 13, 2012
Don’t know anything about the other guys but numbers wise Campos seems like a prospect and Noesi seems like roster filler which doesn’t really even this out.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
Sickels has Campos as a B and Noesi’s ceiling is middle relief so who knows.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
isn’t Safeco death to righty hitters?
Tommy Blackjack - January 13, 2012
Isn’t Safeco death to hitters?
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
i've been told
less so to LHH
Tommy Blackjack - January 13, 2012
When you think you can get a Votto and get a Montero I can see the outcry, but honestly, couldn’t Montero based on his minor league pedigree be better then Votta very quickly? Okay probably not
Are the Mariners the new Kansas City Athletics for the New York Yankee’s. That seems like a great deal for them. Pineda’s 2nd half ERA was over 5 but his 2nd half peripherals were even better then his 1st half.
Still those Mariners badly needed some offense.
Interesting trade, not one you see very often. I’m trying to think of a comp, coming up empty.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Seattle sent Cliff Lee to Texas.
David Young - January 13, 2012
RIght but Cliff Lee was old, I’m talking about two young studs, one a pitcher for one year and the other the best minor league hitter in baseball.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
You just don’t see this unless my memory is simply blank.
Phil Gurnee - January 13, 2012
Not quite a match but Delmon Young for Matt Garza is the closest thing I can think of.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
In some of those three-ways the A’s were in, maybe two stud prospects moved?
David Young - January 13, 2012
I meant as a counter to the KC/NY analogy. NY isn’t the only team benefiting from Seattle.

I was starting to wonder though.
But I shouldn’t have.
Hope for the Mariners’ sake Montero is as good as the hype. I’m a little doubtful but we’ll see.

Yankees/Mariners
I am currently re-running my simulation of the entire 2012 season with rosters updated for the Yankees and Mariners (swags on lineups and games played per player). Should be ineteresting to see the win total jumps. Yankees should have a jump with the addition of Pineda/Kuroda and loss of Montero. Not sure if the Mariners will see one or not from the addition of Montero and loss of Pineda.
Previous baseline was…
NYA with 91.2 wins
SEA with 71.8 wins
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
Results…
Yankees went up to 92.6 wins
Mariners went up to 72.0 wins
Mariners tally looks like noise. No gain, no loss in wins. Yankees gained a win and a half. Should be difference of (Jones – Montero) + (Pineda + Kuroda – Hughes – Garcia)

Jones vs lefties = 263/363/504
no more inefficiencies in baseball..

Yep, once every team knows everything about everything…all thats left is an auction for the best players.
Joey Joe - January 13, 2012
Hernandez/Pineda/Fister would’ve been a decent rotation. Who’d they get for Fister?
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
Casper Wells and Charlie Furbush.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
Yuck, not much impact there.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
When Fister stops being Cliff Lee it will look a little better.

would you have dealt rubby for montero?
If Rubby had put up Pineda’s #s?
Joey Joe - January 13, 2012
good question
kinbote - January 13, 2012
I wouldnt have, especially if Montero cant play catcher.
Power hitting 1st basemen can be found in free agency fairly often, or power hitters you can put at 1st.
I’d have kept Rubby.
Joey Joe - January 13, 2012
That’s a big if. I assume Montero could play 1B in the NL for at least six years. If so, I’d do it.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
Better way to look at it is Pineda and Kershaw’s age 22 seasons aren’t that far apart (Pineda was worse since Safeco helped his home runs). Pineda has five years of service time left, Kershaw had four. Would you have even considered giving up Kershaw at this time last year?
Compared to what three years of Gio Gonzalez and four years of Mat Latos returned the Mariners got absolutely scammed. Hell, the return for four years of Trevor Cahill isn’t too much less.
Montero has more upside than almost any offensive prospect but Harper, Trout and Profar but the most likely scenario is a DH with a 125 OPS+. That’s just not nearly enough return compared to what other teams got.
regfairfield - January 13, 2012
It looks like a panic trade for an Ms team that is tired of having the worst offense in baseball.
Joey Joe - January 13, 2012
I don’t claim to be a SME on Pineda, but Mariner fans say he doesn’t have a change up and has some injury concerns.
Xeifrank - January 13, 2012
If there are true injury concerns then maybe they are trying to sell high like the Rockies believe they did with Ubaldo..
Joey Joe - January 13, 2012
Entirely possible. I know nothing much beyond his numbers (a similar strikeout rate and much better walk rate than Kershaw at his age) and maybe he’ll never get better. But what if he improves that change up? What if he stays healthy?
It’s totally possible that the Mariners win this in the end but it seems like it’s betting on a best case scenario from Montero and a worst case from Pineda. If anything it should have been the Yankees throwing in a decent prospect, not the Mariners.

If the Rangers sign Yu, the Nats trade for Trumbo and the Blue Jays deal for Smoak, then the only place left for Prince to go is back to Milwaukee for a one-year deal. :)

Seriously, that sounds… quite reasonable for Fielder. Especially considering the deal that Pujols got. I would give him that deal.
