10 months ago: SAN DIEGO, CA - AUGUST 3: Andre Ethier #16 of the Los Angeles Dodgers tosses his bat after striking out during the first inning of a baseball game against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on August 3, 2011 in San Diego, California. (Photo by Denis Poroy/Getty Images)
The Dodgers avoided arbitration with Andre Ethier, signing him to a one-year deal worth $10.95 million, plus performance bonuses per his agency, CAA. Ethier made $9.25 million 2011 in the final year of a two-year, $15.25 million contract signed before the 2010 season.
Those performance bonuses for Ethier can total up to $50,000, per Tony Jackson of ESPN LA. Ethier gets $25,000 for 600 plate appearances, and $25,000 more for 625 plate appearances. Last week I guessed a 2012 salary of $13 million for Ethier. I was way off. It looks like Ted Lilly will be the highest paid Dodger in 2012.
Ethier's $10.95 salary in 2012 is the ninth highest single season salary by a Dodgers outfielder.
| Highest Single Season Salary, Dodgers Outfielders | ||||
| Outfielder | Year | Base Salary | Incl. Bonus | Comment |
| Manny Ramirez | 2009 | $25 million | $25 million | reduced via suspension |
| Manny Ramirez | 2010 | $20 million | $20 million | |
| Andruw Jones | 2009 | $17.1 million | $19.6 million | spread out through 2014 |
| Andruw Jones | 2008 | $14.1 million | $16.6 million | |
| Shawn Green | 2003 | $15 million | $15.67 million | |
| Shawn Green | 2002 | $12.75 million | $13.42 million | |
| Shawn Green | 2001 | $11.5 million | $12.17 million | |
| J.D. Drew | 2006 | $11 million | $11.4 million | |
| Andre Ethier | 2012 | $10.95 million | ??? | |
Shawn Green also made $16 million in 2004 ($16.67 million if you prorate his $4 million signing bonus over his six-year contract), but he moved first base that season. Matt Kemp makes $10 million in 2012, but he joins the party in 2013, as the final seven years of his contract pay Kemp between $21 and $22 million each season.
The Dodgers have $72.6 million committed to 15 players in 2012, plus a little over $22.2 million in dead money, paid to players no longer on the roster. Don't be surprised if Ethier isn't the only settlement today. James Loney and Clayton Kershaw are also arbitration eligible.

Eric's Kershaw hope/prediction
Could come true.

2013 Arb Eligibles
Clayton Kershaw
Blake Hawksworth
A.J. Ellis (Super Two)
Ramon Troncoso needs 29 days of MLB service in 2012 to qualify for arbitration.
silverwidow - January 17, 2012
So he’ll still be a free agent at the end of the year? Is this a good or bad sign for long term renewal ?
Josie Becker - January 17, 2012 via iPhone app
Landscape will be completely different a year from now. But our new owner will be competing with everyone else that’s interested.
silverwidow - January 17, 2012
I can’t see where this is an indication one way or the other.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
In fact the only indication that I get from this signing is that we will be paying Fielder $2M this season.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
If Colletti was going to extend Ethier, this probably would have been the time to do it. I don’t see Ethier as a Dodger in 2013 unless the new owners really want him here.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
It's a blank sign
I think the chances of Ethier staying a Dodger past 2012 are the same today as they were yesterday.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
Shawn Green moved first base and they gave him a raise? man, if I went around my workplace just moving things around all willy nilly, they’d probably fire me.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
Matt Kemp moved a trash can
and was nearly run out of town
mleadman - January 17, 2012
Los Angeles Dodgers: This time, you leave it the fuck alone.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
Did Kemp's extension
And salary for 2012, set the market for Ethier?
Michael White - January 17, 2012
Not really because Kemp would have gotten 15 or so in a hearing. His extension has built in salary relief for this year.
silverwidow - January 17, 2012
Right, but we figured Ethier would have gotten $13MM in a hearing, so….
Michael White - January 17, 2012
Would not
Surprise me if has easily reached plate appearances incentives tat kick it up another 2M.
bhsportsguy - January 17, 2012
Can’t wait for him to play on a bum knee
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
Well he is a Dodger :)
Tommy Blackjack - January 17, 2012 via iPhone app
I think so too
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
It was important for Andre to make more then Kemp this one last time
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
I don’t think Kemp’s contract played a role, but I would like to see just how much in performance bonuses he can earn. My hunch is that it a couple million dollars.
The arb process is hard to pin down and if you think about it someone like Ethier is hard to predict: how many outfielders with Ethier’s numbers go to arbitration for a fourth time? (I don’t know the answer, I assume the answer is close to zero, with the more productive ones already signing multi-year deals) Maybe using the percentage raise breaks down at a higher point like Ethier, and there is some sort of an artificial cap which kept Ethier from going much higher (not to mention coming off an injury, etc).
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
Not a fan of this early morning news breaking BTW. Was going to sleep in until 7:30 or so, but checked my phone and saw the Ethier news.
The first few weeks of spring training will be like this too, when Arizona is still an hour off and Mattingly meets with reporters around 7:45 PST.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
don't worry
i am sure mattingly will not say anything interesting
delias man - January 17, 2012

Well, we enjoy reading it.
kinbote - January 17, 2012
Maybe your east coast brother can fill in for you on those early mornings.
Xeifrank - January 17, 2012
if he’s only making 10.95 this year, and has another year like last year, i don’t imagine them offering him a contract worth $12-$13mil to be able to get draft pick compensation next season.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
Not sure what you mean
The only way to get draft pick compensation in the new CBA is to offer a one-year qualifying offer at the average of the top 125 salaries.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
Nevermind, I misread and missed a word or two.
I disagree. I think they would offer it, and Ethier would decline.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
but if he plays like 100 games again, 1yr/12mil would be a great contract for him, i would think.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
or he could play in 135 games again
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
how many of those were healthy? He should have only played in 100 games
I MADE UP A NUMBER OKAY
☺
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
sorry, i thought it was any contract worth at least the average of the top 125 salaries, and i thought that figure was estimated at $12ish.
I wonder if they count Kemp’s average annual value or his $10mil value for next year’s calculations.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
I’m pretty sure for purposes of that it would be average annual value. But I haven’t seen the CBA.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
When it comes to baseball games I love a blow out, when it comes to basketball games I used to want a blowout because I never trusted our guards to perform in the clutch.
That is no longer true, even with Paul out, we still had one of the best historical closers and he did what he needed to do to help grind out a victory that had the likes of a D league guard getting minutes. As fun as the 17 point lead in the 1st quarter was, having the Nets tie the game in the 4th, setup an exciting finish that had the near capacity crowd on it’s feet.
I don’t get the Humphries hate? Why is he being booed mercilessly for simply marrying and divorcing an idiot? The man has a solid PF game.
Blake put up some numbers yesterday but I’m worried about several things. One is the free throws, looks like it is starting to be mental, the second is how many times he works hard on the offensive side but ends up with nothing and then waits a few seconds before heading downcourt on defense allowing the opposition time to work a play 5 against 4. Centers get a pass on this, guys who are supposed to be motors do not.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
They are booing Humphries because he is gay. People are stupid.
delias man - January 17, 2012
you’ve been watching too much Kardashians. On the radio they made it sound like Humphries showed up Griffin a bit last year, so this was a bit of a revenge angle for both the fans and Griffin.
Josie Becker - January 17, 2012
i have never watched a minute of it before
i told you that my reality TV has to be of people at their jobs. and J Shore
delias man - January 17, 2012
those Kardashian girls work hard to keep up their appearance : )
Josie Becker - January 17, 2012
No, that is not it. He’s being booed everywhere he goes. Many offensive power forwards showed up Blake last year. He’s not exactly a defensive player. Yes, Humphries outplayed him last year, I doubt as many fans knew that as knew who he married and divorced.
For whatever reason he was voted most hated NBA player, as Clipper Steve said I guess they polled 15 year old girls
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
because you dont fuck with the kardashians!!

G.Scott - January 17, 2012
I was at the game
and I was really confused as to why everyone was booing. It was a weird boo because everyone would laugh after they finished booing. It was a strange combination of confusion and hilarity. I didn’t boo him until he was shooting free throws in the 4th, but I did find it funny that everyone booed him
yolos - January 17, 2012
Right it was not a hostile boo, at least not until he started kicking some ass, then it was, stop it you fuck.

From reading the blogs, Yankee fans sure seem upset about losing Montero. Will be interesting to follow their careers in parallel to see who won.

I always thought you only got a ring for winning the whole thing. Players got a ring for just winning the National League before??
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
like, every year, i believe. When only one team wins the league and the playoffs consist of the world series, winning the pennant is a big deal. By now it’s mostly tradition. I believe they do the same thing in basketball and football, handing out league champion rings, they just don’t get the big ceremony.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
yeah but right now, do players get a ring for winning the NL, or AL?? If so, wow, I had no idea… thought only for WS champs you get a ring.
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012

I got really on high on my horse two weekends ago, when the Houston Texans were hosting a playoff game. All the pundits said it was the first playoff game in Houston since the Oilers left (which is correct)
And everyone said in twitter, in their whiniest voice, well what about the Super Bowl? WHICH IS NOT A PLAYOFF GAME!
Josie Becker - January 17, 2012
It’s one of the tangents on here that made sense. I had never thought of it before.
kinbote - January 17, 2012
the Super Bowl is essentially a professional Plus-One game, no?

This one is pretty hilariously bad.
Can Matt Kemp really go 50-50?
Let me summarize some of the major points:
1. Kemp probably can’t reach 50/50 because he couldn’t reach 40/40 last season. If he had had that one more home run, the author would have been more inclined to be optimistic.
2. Reaching 50/50 is really hard. No one else has ever done it. Which I presume is exactly why the unsourced questioner asked the question…
3. Kemp isn’t really that fast. There’s not really any empirical data to back up this claim, unless you count Kemp’s minor league statistics from 2006.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
It would be worse if it said Kemp could go 50/50
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
Kemp could definitely go see 50/50. Does that count?
Nolij - January 17, 2012
Or eat a 50/50 bar. I could see him doing that.
kinbote - January 17, 2012
I don’t know. I’d put the chances at …
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
true.
just because i reach the same conclusion as him doesn’t mean he did a good job of explaining….
court168627 - January 17, 2012
I saw that yesterday. I had to laugh.

That they tell us we need a new GM.
DodgerofTrolleys - January 17, 2012
No, they don’t.
Nolij - January 17, 2012
yeah,
i’m pretty ok with Ted Lilly’s contract.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
To elaborate, Ted Lilly had the highest WAR last year of any non-cost-controlled player that is still on the team (tied with Loney). Him being the highest-paid is not unreasonable.
Nolij - January 17, 2012
Mark Ellis, Juan Rivera, Aaron Harang , Matt Guerrier and Juan Uribe do that, but Kemp getting paid only $10mil in 2012 and Ted Lilly getting paid a fair sum do not.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
well
dodgerscribe: Also, it doesn’t sound like Kershaw or Loney are close to agreeing. Arb #s were due to be filed 5 min. ago.
Josie Becker - January 17, 2012
Loney probably wants to be paid like Jim.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
oh and Dre's incentives
dodgerscribe: Ethier’s deal is one year, $10.95 mill plus $25,000 for each of 600 and 625 plate appearances. He has reached 600 PAs just once, in 2009
Josie Becker - January 17, 2012
Loney must be excited he got mentioned in the same sentence as Kershaw.
kinbote - January 17, 2012

Josie Becker - January 17, 2012
in 20 years, I hope they keep Loney on the Dodger PR tours with Kemp and Clayton.

I hate Choo-Choo Soul. Genevieve scares me. That may be why I stopped backing Loney.

Shin Soo-Choo got $4.9 million
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
THE Shin Soo-Choo
kinbote - January 17, 2012
BTW
if I were a sound guy for an MLB team (well aware I would likely get fired) I would play “Drive My Car” by The Beatles or “Crash” by the Dave Matthews Band every time Loney came to bat.

Or “Beep Beep.”

ishXdavid - January 17, 2012
maybe im misunderstanding
but if arb numbers were due 5 mins ago and there’s no word on whether or not the dodgers filed them, wouldn’t that be MORE evidence that the dodgers avoided arb and signed them to contracts?
court168627 - January 17, 2012
No
The numbers that they filed at will be released later today. The 9am deadline just acts as a deadline of sorts when a lot of deals get done to avoid going to that next step.
They can still continue to negotiate.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012

I don’t expect my great socially aware leaders to play great Center Field, and I don’t expect the greatest Center Fielder ever to necessarily have a nuanced grasp on labor policy and relations
I think Flood saw the world round when nearly all of his peers still saw it flat. That is a credit to Flood, but not a knock on his peers
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
Well, it is, actually, when you put it that way. Though I know what you mean.
berkowit28 - January 17, 2012
Cole Hamels got $15 million from the Phils, per Heyman
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
how do people feel about him as a dodger next season?
i’d rather go after matt cain. there are so many great pitchers on the market next season any team that hopes to contend has to scoop one of them up.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
I don’t think Cain sees free agency. I think Hamels will, and I’m all for acquiring him because we would lock up at least one 5th place SBN NL Cy Young vote
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
I thought I saw something on Twitter this weekend where there was a Cain to Toronto rumor. Was that just BS?
Michael White - January 17, 2012
yes
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
Who are the great pitchers on the market next season?

G.Scott - January 17, 2012
and that list will most certainly change.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
check my shorter list below.
compared to this year, with the top two being CJ Wilson and Edwin Jackson, this list is pretty unbelievable
court168627 - January 17, 2012
At least half those guys won’t make it to free agency and it will look almost as bad.
regfairfield - January 17, 2012
totally disagree.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
he’s right, we just don’t know which half and who. The Giants may fall out of it, trade Cain, new team extends him, Giants might extend him, or he might hit FA and the three are about as equally likely.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
at least half?
court168627 - January 17, 2012
Always happens.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
I feel guys like Liriano, Peavy, Zambrano will definitely be free agents
The first two being injury concerns, the last being a head case. I wouldn’t mind taking a chance on any of them depending on how big of a price drop they will be.

been pitching since he was the baby.
Of everyone on that list I’d like Grienke in Dodger Stadium.
I’d rather have Loney at 1st and Grienke pitching then Fielder and Eovaldi.
Course when Loney goes .311/.373/.477 this year that will be easier to swallow.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012

Trade for him
mleadman - January 17, 2012

ishXdavid - January 17, 2012
Grienke will be coming as a mega free agent. That always has baggage.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
yup.
even in Milwaulkee. And that’s why I don’t buy some of the langauge about fragile players and the pressure of big city media. These guys are playing in the major leagues. There’s always going to be media scrutiny, especially when you’re good.

berkowit28 - January 17, 2012
Zambrano, Anibal, Peavy, McCarthy, Marcum, Liriano, Hamels, Greinke, and Cain all are very interesting options that will likely be available. Greinke tops the list for me, then Hamels, then Cain.

Cain, Hamels, Greinke.

court168627 - January 17, 2012
and at the rate they are going will lock him up anyways
they should have the money to do so with hunter and abreu coming off the books and the discounts they got on weaver and howie
nolander - January 17, 2012
This Doesn't Seem Realistic?
Cain – Resign
Hamels – Resign
Greinke – FA
Good middle of rotation starters:
Liriano – Sucks
Colby Lewis – FA
Marcum – FA
Daisuke – Sucks
Ervin Santana – Option
Anibel Sanchez – Resign
Jonathan Sanchez – Sucks
Brandon McCarthy – FA
Kuroda – Retire
Obviously that’s not gonna be exactly right but this seems like a totally reasonable scenario since every free agent class looks great a year in advance.
regfairfield - January 17, 2012
Cain
Seems to be the opinion of some people that the Giants won’t be able to afford to sign both Lincecum and Cain long term, and that Cain might be the one they let go of.
latenite - January 17, 2012
If that was the choice then they would be choosing correctly
VeroJoe - January 17, 2012
I definitely agree – no way the Giants let Lincecum go to the Yankees, Red Sox or whoever!
latenite - January 17, 2012

You didn’t give Colby Lewis a “sucks” rating
Tommy Blackjack - January 17, 2012 via iPhone app
all those sucks ratings are kind of dumb.
my point was that they’re serviceable middle of the rotation starters. they all are.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
Not “dumb” but not useful to the discussion. If Jonathan Sanchez sucks then god knows what Reg thinks of Billingsley.
For fun purposes, Randy Johnson did not break a 109 OPS until his age 29 season.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
I'm assuming you meant ERA+.
but then again, a 109 OPS sounds about right for Randy Johnson.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
i assumed he meant MPH
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
I dont know, see how this season goes 1st. But with Kershaw, Bills, Rubby back later on, Evoldi, maybe Zach Lee is ready, I much rather invest the money in offense.
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
Really? You just named one great pitcher, one average one, one coming off arm surgery, and two rookies, one who was in low A ball. That is what you want to go to battle with instead of Cole Hamels?
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
“go to battle with”
seems unlike you
are you sure you are Phil?
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
Frankly
if I’m going to battle, I’m taking Carlos Zambrano and telling him the other side is full of gatorade cooler lovers.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
haha.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
well, I mean, im all for Cole Hamels, but not if it means we cant upgrade the offense… But I guess the FA market is think on hitting next offseason? so maybe have to get a good SP…. but for example, if next offseason Fielder and Hamels are FAs, and I could only get one, im getting Fielder.
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
I dont know that I want to give a SP a huge contract before Kershaw gets one….
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
You are setting a constraint that doesn’t matter.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
are you saying
facts that seem insightful but are really meaningless
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
How do I know it doesnt matter though?? I dont know what the new payroll will be… what kind of contract will Hamels command? What contract will Kershaw command? How do I know new ownership can afford both???
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
you are looking for the deuce, but the fastball keeps going right by you
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
and even if they can afford both, along with Bills contract, and Kemp, can they afford another marquee offensive player or 2 on top of that??
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
Both start with a 2, eventually
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
well, anyways, all my opinion is, is ofcourse I would love Hamels, but IMO only if we can also lock up Kershaw long term, and 2 super star offensive players… I wouldnt want Kershaw, Hamels, then pretty much a similar offense to what we have now, that wouldnt work for me… but whatever, im not GM.
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
Fielder won’t be a FA next year
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
right he wont be, thats why I said if….. was just an example making that power hitting is more a priority for me then SP, but if we can get both, then great… but yes Fielder wont be a FA next year. Shit I might even rather have Napoli then Hamels, but not sure.
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
No
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
for kicks
the best FA position players are probably
Josh Hamilton
Shane Victorino
Michael Bourn
Andre Ethier
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
BJ Upton might actually make it to free agency so I’d include him.
regfairfield - January 17, 2012

And while he doesn’t play like one, Hamilton is technically a CF. So I meant one of those three.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
That’s who I’d choose.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
i was thinking offensively, especially since we have TGJr if you want a defense-first guy who won’t see much PT because of his bat, you might as well use the one making $1mil.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
Upton can hit
nolander - January 17, 2012
OPS+ of 115 last year
after coming crashing down in 2009, he got better each of the last 2 years
nolander - January 17, 2012
ok, so put him on the list. the Ks and low avg/obp are worrisome, but sure why not
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
Yeah
I don’t know what happened, but for 2 years he had a high 300s OBP and now he seems stuck int he low 300s
nolander - January 17, 2012
Hamels it is then.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
I’d trade Eovaldi and Jansen for the best offensive player I could get an call it a day.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
What could they realistically get?
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
Pipe dream: Andrew McCutchen if you throw in Sands and Webster
Realistically: i have no clue. Ian Kinsler if you threw in Webster?
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
why would the rangers trade ian kinsler?
court168627 - January 17, 2012
they have enough offense to spare, in a park that can create offense, for a guy with 1 option year left until free agency after this year.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
I’m a fan of offense at 2b too. Hard to go to battle with Mark Ellis.
kinbote - January 17, 2012
McCutchen is under contract for as long as kershaw isn't he?
nolander - January 17, 2012
FA in 2016
nolander - January 17, 2012

G.Scott - January 17, 2012
I wouldn’t want to give up Sands and Webby for McCutchen…fuck that noise
VeroJoe - January 17, 2012
O_O
really?
court168627 - January 17, 2012
I was actually willing to consider McCutchen for Kemp and Kershaw last year
McCutchen is good and under contract for a long time
nolander - January 17, 2012
I think this was earlier in 2011 when McCutchen was still
keeping pace with Kemp, and we thought no way kemp gets an extension.
nolander - January 17, 2012
are you serious?
nolander - January 17, 2012
Ridicule me all you want….I’ll stick by the fact (all day) that I wouldn’t do that 4:1 trade.
Those four pieces would leaving gaping holes that would be difficult to fill (and expensive)
McCutchen isn’t Kemp
VeroJoe - January 17, 2012
Gaping? Sands didn’t even win a starting outfield spot and Webby is in AA.
Michael White - January 17, 2012
I think he is refering to 2013 with the assumption that both Ethier and Rivera are gone, Sands has a pretty good shot at taking one of those spots. Still McCutchen is pretty sweet.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
you could then play from LF-CF-RF, Gwynn, McCutchen, Kemp.
I’ll live.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
That D would be rediculous.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
Mike we can agree to disagree…no biggie. I’m personally banking on Webby being a solid #4 and hoping Sands ends up meeting 75% of his potential. People here wanted to give up on Kemp and I was his biggest advocate. Same thing with Dee Gordon and although I can’t prove it now there are certain players I’d be willing to bank my TBLA rep on when it comes to reaching their potential.
VeroJoe - January 17, 2012
even if they do that...
mccutchen is still more valuable
nolander - January 17, 2012
you seem to really be undervaluing mccutchen
nolander - January 17, 2012
keep banking
but you really can’t expect any of those prospects to pan out. McCutchen, on the other hand, is a pretty sure bet.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
Then I can be wrong in this instance. I must undervalue McCutchen because I used to hold him and Colby Rasmus in the same regard although 11’ stats show they are completely different players.
VeroJoe - January 17, 2012
I would trade an established #4 and a 115 OPS+ corner OF for McCutchen in a heartbeat. Although McCutchen is missing an ‘o’ in his name.
David Young - January 17, 2012
what?
gaping holes? how? none of them have a starting job in the major leagues except jansen, and he’s an effing relief pitcher.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
thats assuming any of those prospects every pan out
McCutchen is a much player then I think you realize. He might be the 2nd best CF in baseball. Probably pretty easily in the top 5.
nolander - January 17, 2012
Man, you know I’m with you on a lot of things, but McCutchen is a top 10ish player in MLB, is under team control for another 4 years, and we’re talking about players who have yet to make a dent in MLB butw ho would be big lotto tickets for the Pirates.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
I made the statement prior to looking at his numbers last year.
VeroJoe - January 17, 2012
I would clone Sands and Webster just so I could give them up twice for McCutchen.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
i would give up any dodger except kershaw
for McCutchen.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
and i've said gordon and lee are hands off in any trade
this is basically one of the only trades that’s an exception.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
You complete me Eric
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
generally relievers are overvalued
but i wouldnt give up jansen at this point. i’ll repeat what i always say: by the end of 2012 Kenley Jansen will be considered one of the best relief arms in baseball.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
i like trading relievers at their peak. If he has a peakier peak than 2011, awesome.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
Which is why we should’ve traded Guerra for something this offseason.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
Right. Though i could see waiting until they’re both about to hit arbitration to make a decision.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
JOSH HAMILTON?? yeah get me him please!!!
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
what will you do
when he strains a rib signing the contract?
nolander - January 17, 2012
Send him to Germany, get that shit fixed real quick.
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
We have enough people dying at Dodger Stadium.

uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
dude needs to throw more strikes and learn how to get througha lineup a third time and he’ll be amazing.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
yeah, i still like bills too.
a lot actually. i really just see last year as a down season. otherwise, the guy has a a 3.68 era over 163 career starts (with a 3.71 fip). i’ll take that in a heart beat.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
me too.
problem is there’s not much offense on the market next year.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
but with a new owner
Can’t we have it all?
ishXdavid - January 17, 2012
Man, I sure hope so!
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
I don't see any way the Dodgers go after a starting pitcher
They will have:
Kershaw
Billingsley
Harang
Capuano
Rubby
Eovaldi
Then possibly Webster, Withrow, or even Zach Lee clawing at the door.
Ivdown - January 17, 2012
i know, i said the smae thing to my brother. but if a lot of those pitchers end up hitting the market i would imagine their value would be deflated and it would be smart to sign one and trade away some of what we’ve got for some hitting.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
Hamels is a must no matter what
Find a way to get rid of Capang or something. Plus, Nate Dogg is probably a reliever.
silverwidow - January 17, 2012
Lilly is still around too.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
in 2013?
oh joy, lol.
Ivdown - January 17, 2012
Unless we trade 2 or 3 of those guys to get some offense…
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
I don't see any way they go after a starting pitcher

Ivdown - January 17, 2012
I don’t see how that list precludes us from going after someone good. There is only one for sure pitcher on that list. One.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
The sure thing
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
If they were making that movie today, they would omit the definite article and call it “Sure Thing.” Question: is that title better or worse?
Humma Kavula - January 17, 2012
Sure thing.
Nolij - January 17, 2012
“The Sure Thing” sounds like an easy lay.
“Sure Thing” sounds like a response to a request.
It’s worse.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
“The” doesn’t make every title better, but in this case since the “Sure Thing” in this case is a person, and people are nouns, I go with the “The Sure Thing”
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
Reading “Girl with Curious Hair.” Same idea.

Josie Becker - January 17, 2012
interesting take. as for band names, i always assumed it was just a backlash against the garage rock revival.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
In the mid-late 90’s, I was sure that no bad would be signed unless it had a misspelling and/or a number in its name.
Nolij - January 17, 2012
god those names sucked. as did their music.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
Billingsley is under contract for that year, is he not?
Then apparently I forgot Lilly too. You have Lilly, Harang, Capuano all with one year left and making tons of money. Do you just eat the rest of what they are making and get a new big free agent starter?
Ivdown - January 17, 2012
Probably
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
Capang is one big question mark for 2013. They are filling the Kuroda void this year but next year is a whole different can of beans. Wouldn’t surprise if neither is a starter in 2013.
kinbote - January 17, 2012
Maybe the relatively low price for Ethier is a bad sign. Perhaps both sides know his injury is more serious that we feared. Or maybe Ned played the Kim Ng card.
Nolij - January 17, 2012
or perhaps Dre took a fair offer on the table, in anticipation of his long term contract next year.
Josie Becker - January 17, 2012
Nolij’s point makes more sense to me. If both sides have knowledge of lingering injury issues, AND if those injury issues are going to be disclosed/discussed/have an impact on the arb hearing, then it’s in Ethier’s interest to avoid the hearing.
Humma Kavula - January 17, 2012
Speaking of Germany
Ive been wondering how many players will go to Germany to get fixed like Kobe did now, and how many players this could really help? Wonder how much this procedure or whatever it is could change the game. In alot of sports.
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
Potentially a lot, until it gets banned.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
Maybe it gets banned, or im thinking the FDA or whatever its called is going to rush to get this procedure approved so it can be done here.
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012

uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
he's always been kind of a wildcard.
he’s had a couple randomly good seasons, but has been mediocre to below average overall.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
Still, how does that become a minor league signing when you account for those who are getting major league deals. I also found it astonishing.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012

only using court’s FA starting pitcher valuation method :)
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
i listed 11 FA pitchers
3 of which are undeniable aces (or close), the rest I called middle of the rotation. I stand by those claims. Whether or not they’ll make it to FA is another matter, but my valuation method is solid. SOLID AS A ROCK.

I can understand what you are saying. In fact, with the preface that McCutchen is the better player, I’d rather keep Sands and the rest and sign Upton. Upton is not as good, but provides many of the same things that McCutchen does.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
and TGJ provides much of what BJ Upton does, unless you find HRs to be sexy
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
You way overvalue Mr Gywnn
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
30 ops+ isn't worth much phil
nolander - January 17, 2012
if BJ Upton has his 2011 season again in 2012, he has to get something like 48/4, no?
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
Sure, maybe even 5/60. I’d do that and let Sands play LF.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
point being, Gwynn will make between 1 and 2mil for that first year, and BJ Upton will make more money than seems reasonable. With the savings you could do more than upgrade 30 OPS+, you could solidify a rotation spot or upgrade at another position.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
Whats 3 WAR worth to you?
nolander - January 17, 2012
you’re telling me the 30 OPS+ is 3 WAR?

G.Scott - January 17, 2012

nolander - January 17, 2012
I doubt these things are linear
nolander - January 17, 2012
actually I wonder how low your OPS+ has to be for you to get -WAR
so 0.0 war is probably somewhere in the 60s or 70s. If you think of it that way it makes more sense.
nolander - January 17, 2012
fielding counts in WAR, so I hate it and you can only compare oWAR if you’re going to do that.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
This is oWar
they are exactly 3 apart in oWar
nolander - January 17, 2012

I tihnk 30 points in OPS+ is huge

nolander - January 17, 2012
I just can’t imagine him being worth the contract I imagine him getting.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
that sounds like a personal problem
nolander - January 17, 2012
That is probably true, but that is quite different then
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
and honestly
who doesn’t find home runs sexy?
nolander - January 17, 2012
Pitchers and other communist
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
I was working under the assumption that Upton was still 2009 Upton or w/e it was when he struck out too much and didn’t get on base ever. That’s still true, but he got his SLG up high enough to be not a huge liability, and of course his glove is still elite. But if the gloves between him and TGJr are a wash, the difference is two .240 hitters but one hit 20 more HR last year.

I’d think an outfield of three right handed hitters without any left handed difference makers in the infield would be a disadvantage. Since you can no longer find good left hand hitting infielders other then 1st baseman, when we replace Andre, he needs to be replaced with a left hand hitter or we need one heck of a left handed 1st baseman.
Can’t see Texas spending all this money and then letting Hamilton walk.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
Good thing we have a left handed hitting SS.
But point taken.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
Sign Upton, trade a couple of prospects for Headley. Done.
Oh, wait. Punch Uribe in the face and tell him to GTFO. Done.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
why would we punch uribe in the face?
nolander - January 17, 2012
Just seems like something to do.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
It just really bothers me for some reason
He has done nothing off the field to deserve such a thing, and I hardly think someone deserves to be punched in the face for being poor at their job, assuming they gave their best effort. Maybe its just bothering me more right now knowing jacoby jones is getting death threats and having people burn jerseys on his front lawn because he fumbled a fucking football.
nolander - January 17, 2012
My apologies for hyperbole. I just have no desire to see Uribe play another inning for this team. Makes me a little frustrated he is here for two more seasons.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
I am on the record
bounce back season for Juan
He will be ok
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
People keep saying that. I am pretty skeptical.
OB12 - January 17, 2012

court168627 - January 17, 2012
1) Look at Andruw Jones
2) It would almost be impossible for Uribe not to have a bounce-back season.
JonWeisman - January 17, 2012
almost impossible?
what if he, you know, doesn’t hit very well?
court168627 - January 17, 2012
2008: 76 OPS+, 353 PA
2009: 112 OPS+, 432 PA
2010: 102 OPS+, 575 PA
2011: 56 OPS+, 295 PA
You really think he’s going to do worse in 2012 than he did in 2011?
JonWeisman - January 17, 2012
I don’t think he will do worse, but even an 80 OPS+ would be pretty awful.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
3rd baseman and 2nd baseman are kinda awful at hitting a baseball
nolander - January 17, 2012
do you like tony gwynn at all?
nolander - January 17, 2012
I like him for what he is, good 4th OFer. Not starting 3B.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
like i said
he could do better than last year and still not be very good. or he could just be injured for more than half the season like last year.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
when I hear "bounce back"
i dont think “exceed the unbelievable shittiness from the last season.” i think that phrase implies they get “good” again. He may do better than a 56 OPS+, but that doesn’t mean it’s “impossible” for him not to bounce back
court168627 - January 17, 2012
Right, he would have to approach being a serviceable starter to be considered bounce back in my book. Sounds like a lot to ask.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
.240/.300/.400 is serviceable, and reasonable.
Nolij - January 17, 2012
Our bars are so low
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
They’re so low, even I can belly up to them.
Humma Kavula - January 17, 2012
You’re rendering the term “bounce-back” meaningless. Bounce-back does not equal good.
The 2010-11 seasons exceeded what would be typical for Uribe, yet you’re saying that he has to reach that level to have a bounce-back season.
JonWeisman - January 17, 2012
Come on, anyone can bounce back from being the worst hitter in baseball, for bounce back to have any meaning the season has to be useful.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
“The 2010-11 seasons exceeded what would be typical for Uribe, yet you’re saying that he has to reach that level to have a bounce-back season.”
I’m not really sure what this means.
I think you’re rendering “bounce back” meaningless. If Uribe has a 57 OPS+, is that technically a bounce back? If so, then who cares about a bounce back>
court168627 - January 17, 2012
I think you’re splitting hairs. I’m not going to crow I was right if Uribe has a 57 OPS+.
However, if he bounces back to an 80 OPS, that’s meaningful even if it’s not “good.”
JonWeisman - January 17, 2012
It is splitting hairs, but the connotation is important. He’d go from being completely useless to just bad.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
Dead-cat bounce
kinbote - January 17, 2012
That OBP looks a little high :)
kinbote - January 17, 2012
That’s awful, which would be a win for Uribe.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
it’d be average offensively, with his above average defense. For $8mil. We win.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
Based on this thread, the baseball irony gods are hard at work making this prediction come true.
1. Juan Uribe will bounce back and have an OPS of .750
2. His defense will be so bad that Russell Mitchel would be considered a defensive upgrade.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
if his defense is that bad next year...
I will continue believing the universe is a cruel hard place.
nolander - January 17, 2012
He’s pretty round. He should be good at bouncing.
Nolij - January 17, 2012
yes and yes
he could be as bad, he could be worse, but he will probably be better
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
so what?
he was so bad last season that he could OPS .650 this year and still be “better.”
court168627 - January 17, 2012

i still don’t think a .650 ops is good. aaron miles posted a .660 last year and that was ok because he was suppsoed to be a bench player. any starter that posts a .650 ops is not hitting very well (unless, of course, their OBP is astronomically high, which we know Uribe’s won’t be).
court168627 - January 17, 2012
average OPS for a 3rd baseman or 2nd baseman these days
is around 680 to 690. Uribe is above average at defense.
nolander - January 17, 2012
and that average is probably culled from any player that starts the game at 3b, whether or not they’re a full time starter. i’d be interested in seeing the average ops for players that are actually #1 on a team’s depth chart.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
name me 10 3rd baseman that don't suck
nolander - January 17, 2012
well
Josie Becker - January 17, 2012
Longoria
Sandoval
Headley
Beltre
Young
Youkilis
A. Ramirez
Polanco
Prado
Roberts
Chipper
court168627 - January 17, 2012
oh woops.
that was 11. and i forgot alex rodriguez.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
And Mike Schmidt
Humma Kavula - January 17, 2012
Pie Traynor is due for a bounceback year.
Nolij - January 17, 2012
Arlie Latham says Pie Traynor can fuck himself.
Humma Kavula - January 17, 2012
That was not hard
Throw in youngsters likely to be better:
Moustakas
The Rockie Kid
Kyle Seager
Morel
and oldies
Rolen
Alex
That is without even looking at depth charts.
Even a “good” uribe is a lousy Uribe.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
and chipper could miss most of the year.. again
roberts could turn into a pumpkin ramirez is getting old etc. so whats the average ops for a “starting” 3rd baseman. I’m guessing it still doesn’t crack 700.
nolander - January 17, 2012
hahaha
so we’re gonna just throw hypotheticals in there? they all could die in a plane crash to a “great 3b convention” making uribe a top 5 3b, but so what? you asked me to name 10 3b that don’t suck, and i did, FTW.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
you do realize I was replying to phils comment
which was filled with hypotheticals right? RIGHT?!?
nolander - January 17, 2012
I'm excited about the Rockies 3B prospect
Though it sucks he’s a rocky, lol.
Ivdown - January 17, 2012
prado had a .687 ops last year
palanco had a .674 ops. Michael Young is not a 3rd baseman. Yokilis missed. So basically there are 10 good 3rd baseman. Uribe doesn’t have to do much to be as mediocre as the other 19.
nolander - January 17, 2012
Make it easier, look at the teams, name me a 3rd baseman in 2012 who will not be better then Juan Uribe?
Heck for several years we’ve had the worse offensive 1st baseman. In 2012 we get to see if we can have the worst 1st baseman, 2nd baseman, SS, and 3rd baseman. Good times await us all.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
Chone Figgins?
Nolij - January 17, 2012
Kyle Seager will probably start. No big deal but still better.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
you guys aren't bringing your A game
neither of you metnioned zimmerman or that kid in Miami.
nolander - January 17, 2012
I actually think Uribe can be better then Dominguez in 2012 but not Hanley
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
exactly.
people just need to take the blue tinted glasses off. uribe is not a good hitter. even for a 3b.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
Is there one person in here who has said Uribe is a good hitter?
JonWeisman - January 17, 2012
yes
nolander - January 17, 2012
i was responding to an argument that a .650 ops is good for a 3b. so in that case, yes.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
You put words in my mouth
I iddn’t say it was good. I said his D could make him “goodish”
nolander - January 17, 2012
I didn't say he was
I said he could do enough to be mediocre to not completely bad enough that his D could make up the difference and he could be useful.
nolander - January 17, 2012
Jones hasn’t bounced back as much as he has found a niche. We are still wanting Uribe to be a starter.
OB12 - January 17, 2012
He will have better than a .710 OPS
Count on it
Ivdown - January 17, 2012
I am on the record
Juan Uribe could bounce back
he would still suck, because Juan Uribe is not good at hitting a baseball.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
what fun is that prediction
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
Reality intervenes.
Juan Uribe will not post an OPS ala 2009 in the .824 range
Juan Uribe will not post an OPS ala 2010 in the .749 range
Juan Uribe will not post an OPS ala 2011 in the I am the worst hitter in baseball range
He will post an OPS in the .640 – .680 range and while everyone can crow he had a bounce back that is still not going to help a team score runs with an infield of Loney / Ellis / Gordon / Uribe and AJ Ellis behind the plate. Kemp and Andre will only be able to do so much.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
Looks like we’ll have pretty similar projections this year, Phil.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
What part of my original comment do people disagree with?
“Uribe is a good defensive player and it’s more likely than not that he’ll have a bounce-back year offensively. That certainly is not setting the bar high, and I’ve not been a fan of his contract from day one, but I would offer that he’s probably being underestimated for 2012.”’
It’s not like I said he was gonna be an All-Star or even a good player.
JonWeisman - January 17, 2012
it’s a nitpicking atmosphere here this morning

I call it “Dickishness”, but hey that’s just me
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
thanks for the reply about my event idea. my potential hopefully future boss really loved the idea.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
Sweet – glad to be of service
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
If you admit that he might not even be a good player, then I guess we agree. In that case, who cares if he bounces back.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
Yeah, that is pretty much the point we agree on.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
Admit? Yes, you’ve gotten me to concede what I have felt along.
However, if you don’t think the difference between an OPS+ in the 50s and one in the 70s or 80s is significant, we do disagree. It will help, and the Dodgers need every bit of help they can get.
JonWeisman - January 17, 2012
I like it when you bold
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
Last place teams care about 80 OPS+ being helpful, not teams in contention discussing their starting 3rd baseman.
Not sure which is more helpful, a 57 OPS+ from someone who luckily got hurt and did not play much or 600 at bats from an 80 OPS+
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
yup
court168627 - January 17, 2012
this is about the stupidest baseball conversation we have ever had here
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
so's your face
nolander - January 17, 2012
.
nolander - January 17, 2012
That doesn't make any sense
So’s your face!
Ivdown - January 17, 2012
All that means is that the level of discourse regarding baseball has finally devolved to the level of discourse regarding everything else.
Humma Kavula - January 17, 2012
That’s just flat-out wrong.
So if Russell Martin had had a 60 OPS+ instead of an 85 OPS+ for the 2009 Dodgers, that wouldn’t have mattered?
If David Freese had had a 100 OPS+ instead of a 120 OPS+ for St. Louis, the Cardinals don’t even make the playoffs in 2011.
Twenty points of OPS+ matters, whatever your team is.
JonWeisman - January 17, 2012
Okay, just speaking for myself I simply don’t care if a player has an OPS of 60 or 80 they both are not good enough to be playing everyday for a team in contention.
The difference going up from that point is different for me.
If Juan Uribe bounces all the way back to his 2010 level, then hell yeah, I will be excited, if he does his White Sox season, I couldn’t care less.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
Juan Uribe was less than useless last year
That won’t be the case this year. He won’t be good, but hell, with his defense he might be close to average, if just below average.
It WILL make a difference.
Ivdown - January 17, 2012
yes
nolander - January 17, 2012
to return the discussion to baseball...
he might be the best bet for 2b/3b this season. i cant really imagine hairston/ellis/kennedy doing better at the plate than uribe. well, im sure some of them will get on base more, but i think people hold out hope that uribe can hit 15+ hr.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
BUT
I’m gonna go on record saying I don’t think he bounces back like Jon or Joe predict.
court168627 - January 17, 2012
Uribe is a good defensive player and it’s more likely than not that he’ll have a bounce-back year offensively. That certainly is not setting the bar high, and I’ve not been a fan of his contract from day one, but I would offer that he’s probably being underestimated for 2012.
JonWeisman - January 17, 2012
agreed
VeroJoe - January 17, 2012
exactly
a 100% exactly
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
I certainly hope so.
kinbote - January 17, 2012
I’d offer that he’s being over estimated by those expecting a “bounceback” to turn into a useful hitter.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012
useful player
not hitter
nolander - January 17, 2012
I don’t personally blame Uribe for not being very good, or for getting a bad contract.
Phil Gurnee - January 17, 2012

uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
general rule: if you or anyone you know has the urge to go buy it on dvd/blu-ray from a store and/or see it in theatres, it’s not streaming yet. The licenses would be way too high.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
you may enjoy Netflix, however I had the same reaction as you, and would assume everyone does that tries it…. But then as time goes on, I got over it, wasnt using it enough, and then canceled. But alot of others use it alot, so that could be you too.
uschris0304 - January 17, 2012
I still get plenty of use out of it
I don’t watch a ton of tv, so I’m usually a year or two behind on shows, so I can watch a bunch of them on Netflix for cheap.
