The Dodgers took care of two of their three arbitration-eligible players on Tuesday, but one big fish remains. Andre Ethier and James Loney signed one-year deals, but the Dodgers were unable to work out a contract with reigning Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw.
The pitcher and the team exchanged salary arbitration figures on Tuesday, with Kershaw seeking $10 million in 2012 while the Dodgers offered $6.5 million, per Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The numbers represent the core of the interpretation of this case, similar to what we discussed last week.
The normal record for salary for a first-year arbitration-eligible pitcher is $4.35 million, set by Dontrelle Willis in 2006 and matched by Cole Hamels in 2009 (the first year of a three-year contract) and David Price today (the fine folks at DRaysBay have the details on their southpaw's new deal). The Dodgers have offered a salary that represents a 49.4% raise over this, so even they recognize the value of Kershaw's Cy Young award.
Kershaw, meanwhile, has submitted a number that reflects his outlier status, more in line with that of Tim Lincecum, who signed a two-year, $23 million contract in 2010 that paid the Giants' hurler a $2 million signing bonus, $8 million in 2010, and $13 million in 2011. Lincecum has his own arbitration fight this winter, as he will set a new record whether at $17 million or $21.5 million.
The number to watch in Kershaw's case is $8.25 million, the midpoint of both submitted salaries and the number both sides will argue against. If Kershaw's camp can convince the three-person arbitration panel that he is worth $8,250,001 then he will win the case; conversely Alex Tamin and the Dodger crew will fight for $8,249,999 and below (Just to be clear, if this goes to a hearing, there are only two options for the panel to decide: Kershaw will either be awarded $6.5 million or $10 million, but both sides will argue for their side of the midpoint to sway the arbitration panel).
The $8.25 million midpoint isn't too far off from my guess last week of an $8.5 million salary for Kershaw. It really wouldn't surprise me if either side won an arbitration hearing, as there are solid arguments on both sides. But I think eventually, even though both sides are pretty far apart now, Kershaw and the Dodgers will eventually settle. There is too much to lose on each side to risk going to a hearing.
Besides, I contend that Kershaw and the Dodgers have already agreed to a contract for 2012. Kershaw has just been so busy signing copies of his new book that his left hand has been too tired to sign said contract.

There is also a new post behind this one (this is the newest one though so stay here for the comments) that is a sponsored post. It’s a contest; if you are interested, cool. If not, don’t worry about it.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
Eric, what do you think is more likely?
A long-term deal or a one year deal?
Tommy Blackjack - January 17, 2012 via iPhone app
one-year now. Long term next winter.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
I think so too
Tommy Blackjack - January 17, 2012 via iPhone app
wait seriously the clippers are 1-41 on the road against Utah?
is that even possible?
nolander - January 17, 2012
Well when there’s a debate whether you or the Arizona Cardinals is the worst franchise of all time…
regfairfield - January 17, 2012
Arizona has been the superbowl…..
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
Well that was at least true a few years ago I haven’t bothered rethinking the question :)
So if not Arizona who is in the debate for the worst major sports franchise in America?
regfairfield - January 17, 2012
browns?
nolander - January 17, 2012

Can’t consider any team formed in the last couple decades. Memphis Grizzlies and a bunch of failed NHL teams are in the hunt then.
regfairfield - January 17, 2012
yeah I just figured I would get it out of the way
but I agree completely.
nolander - January 17, 2012
St. Louis Blues maybe
three straight Cups appearances in their early years but nothing since. I don’t know about winning % though. Atlanta Hawks have been mediocre forever and last went to the finals in St. Louis.
But for sustained ineptitude it has to be the Cubs. No need to explain.
Pure Azure - January 17, 2012
That’s a damn good choice. Really any team from Cleveland is.
regfairfield - January 17, 2012
browns have like a .3 winning percentage in the playoffs
bengals too
nolander - January 17, 2012
Might be fair to call any team from Ohio miserable failures but the Reds?
Hell even a friend of mine in his mid 20s that’s a Reds fan says Barry Larkin is the only good thing that’s happened in his life.

you know what, super bowl appereance be damned
the Cardinals are still historically the worse franchise in the NFL.

Clippers' rough spots on the road the last 20 or so years
at Utah: 15 straight, 1-41 in last 42
at San Antonio: 17 straight, 1-26 in last 27, 3-40 in last 43
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012

Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
1-42 now
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
three year or two year deal
Do you think Kershaw would go for a two or three year deal-two year deal for 15million (7.5 each year) or three year at 24-25 million.
wineracquet - January 17, 2012
Absolutely no chance.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
none. he’s taking all the risk.
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
No. Kershaw stands to make that much unless his career ends on the first pitch of the season this year.
regfairfield - January 17, 2012
that’s a greek chorus of NO right there
Hollywood Joe - January 17, 2012
even then, he’ll be non-tendered and given minor league deals until he’s 30, which is 7 years
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
Hell wasn’t Mark Prior getting guaranteed deals until last year?
regfairfield - January 17, 2012
minor league deals with a bunch of incentives
G.Scott - January 17, 2012
At a very rough estimate, assume a 50% raise in his next two years, per arbitration. So even if Dodgers win at $6.5 million you are looking at:
$6.5m
$9.75m
$14.63m
That’s 3 years, $30.88 million, and much more like a floor than anything else.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
Ok so I lowballed it
Would 3 years at 39million-13million be enough?
wineracquet - January 17, 2012
Yeah mid 30s is a good start.
regfairfield - January 17, 2012
Something like that would work, I just don’t see it happening until next year.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
I realize the amount of the monetary commitment is different
but if – if – it makes sense for the Nats to give Gio Gonzalez a five-year commitment that buys out three arb years and two FA years, doesn’t it make sense for the Dodgers to do the same for Kid K? (Ownership issues notwithstanding.) And how many dollars would that take? Double what Gio got, or $84M?
David Young - January 17, 2012
I don't think for myself so
6/95
nolander - January 17, 2012
Yeah, something like that.
Maybe 7/11/17 and add 20 for each of the free agent years, so 5/$75 or something like that.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
I’d say average 12 for the arb years, 20 a piece for FA so 5/76.
regfairfield - January 17, 2012
Ownership is the issue
I think Eric’s point is correct and we have to wait until next year. Given that Kershaw has so many years left of arbitration he wants to maximize and if the Dodgers want to do something they are going to have to pay and really can’t do that until next year. Hence my idea at 3 years.
wineracquet - January 17, 2012
I agree with you that from a cost-certainty standpoint, signing Kershaw for 3 years can work without affecting ownership at all, in fact possibly saving the next owner by locking Kershaw in for years he was going to be here anyway.
But from a “I want to lock Kershaw up” standpoint, I would hate a 3-year deal.
If I had to choose between a 3-year deal now or a 5-or 6-year deal next offseason, I’d rather wait.
Eric Stephen - January 17, 2012
Maybe they can "handshake" on something
and then when the owner comes in pass it by them for approval
nolander - January 17, 2012

glad you brought that up
I watched the video, and there’s this passed out LSU fan and Bama fans are stacking trash on him and he’s not moving. He’s clearly the only LSU fan in the area. He moves a little bit, and everyone backs off, but he’s clearly gone. And about two minutes in, yeah a Bama fan pulls out his balls, climbs on top him, and places them on the young LSU fan’s face.
Now there’s a rumour out there that the LSU fan died, but he’s not dead. It’s one of those things that without youtube would be a giant urban myth, but lo and behold, there is video.
Another actual fact about the case, is that a local TV station aired the video on their newscast, and one of the boys in the video is the son of the Sports reporter.

Even though it probably doesn’t matter, I like that balance too. It’s like when you played over-the-line or something with a buddy and forced him to keep moving from LF to RF because you switch-hit!
kinbote - January 18, 2012
I’d go, Cap > Harang. Better peripherals, just needs to stop getting hit so hard.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
LOL
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
I put that in to keep Reg off my back. :)
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
I fully believe Capuano will be better than Harang.
Of course you can put any other name but Capuano in that sentence and it will be true.
regfairfield - January 18, 2012
ha ha
Hey, the Padres have a complete new rotation in 2012 from 2010
Garland, Correja, LeBlanc, Latos, and Richard per BRef’s top five starters
How often does that happen?
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Once every two years?
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
Could be right but Peavy was there for a long time. That said the Padres may go through starting pitchers faster then anyone over the last decade.
I can only think of Peavy and Chris Young as something of mainstays.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Ditto
DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
Probably more often than you’d think on bad teams.
Just going through the Royals they did it 2005-2007.
regfairfield - January 18, 2012
Right, but the Padres were almost the NL West Champions in 2010 not some chum.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Longterm
I’d say
1.Kershaw
2.Verlander
3.Strasburg
4.Felix
5.Halladay
6.Weaver
7.Sabathia
8.Lee
9.Carpenter
10.Lincecum
DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
What do people think about this
I kind want criticism of my opinions right now.
DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
Nobody cares
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
Lee seems low. Stras seems high. No huge issues though.
Michael White - January 18, 2012
Ok, Veruca Salt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRTkCHE1sS4 ;)
Seems like a good long term list, although Lee and Sabathia may drop off due to age within a few years no?
underdog - January 18, 2012
Yep.
DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
Can’t fight the seether.
Nolij - January 18, 2012
Veruca Salt!
VeroJoe - January 18, 2012
I’d say long term Verlander will fall fast. Great Tiger pitchers don’t have any staying power:)
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Hal Newhouser?
Nolij - January 18, 2012
Well yes
I didn’t quite manage the long-term aspect as well as I’d have liked.
DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
You’ve got a Weaver and a Carpenter, all you are missing is a Chef or a Blacksmith.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
Perhaps a Fletcher or a Cooper or a Haberdasher.
Nolij - January 18, 2012
Going long term I have no problem with Kershaw being number 1
I’d have Lee behind Halladay, and move Strasburg down behind them (for now). I’d move Lincecum behind Strasburg.
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
How close is Matt Moore to making your long term list?
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
One good season this year and I'd definitely add him
I just think most of these guys are going to still be great 3 years from now, with the exception of maybe Carpenter. If Moore has a good rookie season, he could move to the middle of that list for sure.
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
Darvish deadline is today right?
I hope he goes back to Japan and we sign him next year. Please please please.

Rangers have 30 days from whenever the day they won the bid. I don’t remember when the bid was announced but they have much longer than today.

Haha
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
Haven’t had a dream in a long time.
kinbote - January 18, 2012
Does Carpenter deserve recognition over Weaver, Haren & Granick (Greinke)? I keep thinking that age will catch up to him, but the guy keeps grinding…also isn’t Latos going to get some props if he continues his incline?
VeroJoe - January 18, 2012
"Incline"
is not how I would describe Latos’s trajectory from 2010 to last year.
court168627 - January 18, 2012
what would you call it? A decline?
VeroJoe - January 18, 2012
Yes.
court168627 - January 18, 2012
Unless you're talking about...
ERA, WHIP, FIP, BB/9….Those things all inclined.
court168627 - January 18, 2012
I still like him, and think his future is very bright. Great frame, great velocity….just bad support.
VeroJoe - January 18, 2012
Agreed.
court168627 - January 18, 2012
Carpenter is a bonafide postseason hero. Hard to take that away from him. Shutting out Philly last year was semi-legendary.
kinbote - January 18, 2012
Agreed! Dude is a beast
VeroJoe - January 18, 2012
Seriously, every season it seems like I have a chance to draft him in fantasy baseball and every season i think “he’s old and due for a decline.” Needless to say every season i regret that decision.
court168627 - January 18, 2012
I am of the same mindset
VeroJoe - January 18, 2012
Other(s)
Gallardo, J.Johnson, and Strasburg
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
I think Johnson is sick, but I also think he has to bounce back. Much in the way of Beckett.
VeroJoe - January 18, 2012
He has to be healthy, just like Strasburg.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
Becket simply sucked in 2010, so he had to bounceback from sucking.
Josh Johnson was just about the best pitcher in 2011 until he got hurt. He simply has to be healthy.
Both of them can kiss Kid Kershaw’s ass.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
can you define bounceback for me?
G.Scott - January 18, 2012
only if you kiss Kid Kershaw’s ass first
VeroJoe - January 18, 2012
I'd definitely put Johnson on there
If he could stay healthy. But going off pure talent i’d actually have him top 5.
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
Yes,
DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
Let me make sure I am correct here
(
This means that if it goes to the 3 man panel he will get 10 million or 6.5? My boss is saying (which I thought he was wrong from the beginning) that he could end up with a higher amount than 10. I’d love to own him in our next conversation wtih some supported information :)
Dodgerblue8188 - January 18, 2012
that it correct
If it goes to the hearing, Clayton will get one or the other.
Tommy Blackjack - January 18, 2012 via iPhone app
Yes. If it goes to arb, he gets 6.5 or 10. Nothing in between. If they settle, he gets something in between. Either way, the chance that he makes more than 10 mil next season is 0%.
court168627 - January 18, 2012
but remember
when owning your boss, he’s still your boss. own him gently.
court168627 - January 18, 2012
You: “No, you’re wrong about Clayton Kershaw’s arbitration hearing. if it goes to a hearing, he will be awarded one sum or the other per the MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement”
Boss: “You got bullied into that conversation, Danny, by everyone. By Dawson. By Galloway. Shit, I practically dared you. You got bullied into that courtroom by the memory of a dead lawyer.”
You: “You’re a lousy fucking softball player, Jack!”

Michael White - January 18, 2012
Hell would freeze before a noted Japanese pitcher would sign up to pitch in the hell hole called Fort Worth, Texas.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Right…I remember now
Michael White - January 18, 2012
Everyone has a price. I’m sure Texas has a lot to do with it, but everyone can be bought to do whatever it is you need them to do. Considering even at $13mil a year, he made 500million yen last year in Japan. That’s roughly a 200% increase. Fucking pitch suckah
G.Scott - January 18, 2012
Why should he? He can simply do it all over again and maybe this time he will get the team he wants to pitch for.
Do you really think money is an issue? Whatever his salary is, he’s making more then that in endorsements. Jordan did not build an empire based on his salary.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
nah, i don’t think it’s all the money, just saying everyone has a price
G.Scott - January 18, 2012
This guy agrees
OB12 - January 18, 2012
I will be shocked if no agreement is met. If it isn’t, get ready for Fielder in Tejas.
kinbote - January 18, 2012
FWIW Darvish won’t be a free agent until after 2013, so if he doesn’t sign with Texas he would have to go through the posting system again next year.
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
For a guy who is so “great” it is astonishing how many power forwards seem to have “great” games against Blake.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
yeah but can they dunk over a Kia?
VeroJoe - January 18, 2012
your answer was better
G.Scott - January 18, 2012
The “career-ender” as Eric dubbed it.

kinbote - January 18, 2012
i don’t know if he’s great as much as overly athletic. Much like LeBron when he first came into the league, Blake’s athleticism is otherworldly but he seems to still be learning how to play the game and how to control that athleticism within a team strategy.
You know, if they had a team strategy.
G.Scott - January 18, 2012
The ClipShow!
VeroJoe - January 18, 2012
Oh, they had a strategy yesterday. It was right out of the Joe Torre playbook.
The strategy was, fuck it, try to win, but don’t try to hard. It was the house money’est basketball game I’ve ever seen from the Clips.
Michael White - January 18, 2012
did VDN take his starters and staff into the locker room with 12 seconds left and leave his subs out on the floor for the impending court rush?
G.Scott - January 18, 2012
Close to it
Nobody played more than I think 29 minutes. Resty resterson after awhile.
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
VDN
Sounded pissed afterwards
Tommy Blackjack - January 18, 2012 via iPhone app
At one point in the second quarter (when the game was still theoretically winnable) the five on the floor were: Evans, Thompkins, Gomes, Leslie and Courtney Fotson. For those keeping score, that’s two rookie second round picks, a guy from the D- League, a rebounding specialist and Ryan Gomes. Shockingly, that didn’t go well.
Michael White - January 18, 2012
Neither did the original starting five
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
The starting 5 were missing long jumpers (which you’d prefer they didn’t take so many of) but that could have turned around. A few of these shots were just rimming out so it was a bit unlucky.
I actually don’t have a problem with the strategy I just find VDN being pissed afterwards sort of silly. It clearly was a strategy to rest his guys particularly after the beginning of the game started so poorly.
Michael White - January 18, 2012
Maybe we watched two different games. The game was still in question at 1/2 time even with that group of yours playing in the 2nd quarter. It was how the “starters” started the 3rd quarter that put the game into the crapper.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
I’m not blaming the bench at all. Just pointing out Vinny’s motives. In a tight game (Miami and LAL in particular,) Vinny has shortened his bench and rode his starters. Travis Leslie had only played in garbage time before last night. I just think VDN came in with a game plan where he’d have a quick hook if it didn’t look like the game wasn’t going his way and he’d rest his starters. It was a house money game.
Don’t get me wrong, the starters absolutely mailed it in too.
Michael White - January 18, 2012
and he should not be upset about his starters mailing it in?
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Point taken
Michael White - January 18, 2012
VDN
Should be canned, so the Clippers have a chance to do something in the post-season.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012

Michael White - January 18, 2012
“The Lakers will finish 34-32”
Signed Bill Simmons, fan of the 4-8 Celtics.
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
has any NBA team other then Clippers / Lakers made a worse trade in the last 12 months then the Celtics?
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
I don’t think to many Clipper fans disagree with the notion that to get to the highest level VDN is not the guy to get them there.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
why not
delias man - January 18, 2012
ask them
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
I think the Clippers should hire Kris Humphries as a player/coach.
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
He’d be an excellent addition to the current team.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
If it’s any consolation, the Lakers had the same pattern of effort in their season-opening 3 games in 3 days.
Good effort but a little sloppy in Game 1 (Chicago)
Mailed in the road game in Game 2, embarrassing loss (at Sacramento)
Absolute pasting of a good team at home in Game 3 (Utah)
So congrats to the Clips tonight for their 7th straight home win :)
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
I expected them to get trounced last night so no big deal. Dallas has been hanging around since Sunday Night, they should be well rested, we are not going to win tonight unless somehow Paul and Mo are both playing. 36 year old point guards are not going to have much in the tank on the final leg of the back to back to back.
That is why I really wanted the win on Monday.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Dallas has only had one day of rest (they played Monday), and I’m guessing they will score more than the 70 they put up against the Lakers. But I still think the Clips can beat them, especially at home.
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
Mo is out. He says he’s targeting this weekend. Even so, I think the Clippers can/should win tonight.
Michael White - January 18, 2012
Is Paul playing?
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Haven’t heard anything.
Michael White - January 18, 2012
No way we beat Dallas with only dog tired Billups / Foye available for backcourt duty. Foye is going to feel the 40 minutes on Monday big time Wednesday. He’d barely played before that game.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Oh he’s great and athletic. Better handles then any power forward ever who could also jump out of the building. Still more like Nique at this point and not sure he’ll ever be a defensive factor. He does have unique skills more then just his freakish jumping ability.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012

Perfect time for a Kershaw Masterpiece.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
In the gloaming.
kinbote - January 18, 2012
If Kershaw pitches every five days, he will be scheduled to pitch on May 20.
If, however, he pitches every five games (aside from skipping Harang or Capuano so Kershaw can pitch the home opener on April 10) Kershaw will be scheduled to pitch on May 19. If they don’t have Kershaw pitch the home opener, he would be scheduled to pitch on May 20.
But, as always, projecting out the starting rotation more than a few days in advance is a fool’s errand, so take with an enormous grain of salt.
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
So you’re saying there’s a chance.
kinbote - January 18, 2012
when we drafted our season tickets last year (full season split up, I got 20 tickets (8 games of 2, 1 game of 4 tickets)) I planned out Kershaw and Billingsley starts, and I think it worked out that I saw Kershaw 6 of the 9 games, billingsley twice and one kuroda.
I was banking on two things: their durability, and Mattingly’s “take the ball every 5th game” mentality. I don’t think he’s skipped the 5th starter very often, opting instead to give the rotation the extra day of rest.
G.Scott - January 18, 2012
Yeah, the only time he skipped the fifth starter last year was in the first week when Jon Garland was out and the Dodgers had an off day. John Ely only got one start, a dreadful one in San Diego that Delias Man, Mike White, and I were all in attendance for.
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
lucky you
G.Scott - January 18, 2012
That’s OK, because I also got to see the Dodgers win two games in about three hours with Broxton collecting two saves and Tony Gwynn Jr. beasting out in the shadow of his dad’s statue.

Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012

DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012

DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
I don’t touch the stuff.
kinbote - January 18, 2012
It's too fast
I mean, like 90 mph? Yikes.
DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
That's pretty close to the 4 year anniversary of Kershaw's debut
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
I have so much less incentive to watch the Cardinals play
Now that Jim Edmonds has been gone a few years and Pujols is gone too.
I know they will be very good still this year, but without Pujols, I wonder just how good.
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
contend for the division, possible-favorite good.
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
Beltran is a good stop gap for pujols
and they have young guys who could be very good like freese and craig iirc. Plus they get wainright back. Seems like they could easily be better this year then last year.
nolander - January 18, 2012
Easily?
All that you said may if they are lucky get them back to the same level, being better, no way.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
I think Beltran and Wainwright can make up for the absence of Pujols.
for one year at least. It could easily go completely wrong with them relying on beltran and berkman, but if they stay healthy and produce…
nolander - January 18, 2012
keep in mind pujols didn't have that great a season last year
nolander - January 18, 2012
Cardinals might win the central, they will not win more then 95 games. They will struggle to win 93.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
93 > 90
Beltran had almost the same value last year as pujols. Wainwright figures to be a big shot in the arm. Long term they would be better off with pujols of course.
nolander - January 18, 2012
I think the removal of Pujols will have a larger effect then the numbers show. Berkman will not repeat what he did, Beltran will need to stay healthy (huge if), everyone seems to assume 29 year old Wainwright will go right back to being one of the best pitchers in the game. They also have a LF playing in CF with no one to back him up should he prove to be illusionary.
And counting on Rafy at SS. This team has zero depth if injuries hit injury prone players like Beltran, Berkman, Rafy, Freese.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
I said could be
if they stay healthy they could easily be better. Could. I’ve acknowledged that it could go wrong, but its not like they are relying on career years from a bunch of players to get there.
nolander - January 18, 2012
Berkman’s numbers will be lower, but not because Pujols is gone. #Regressing #AgingCurves
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
Yes, did not mean to imply one was the result of the other.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Agreed
Cards, Reds, and Brewers will be in a dogfight for the division. Brewers hurt by missing Braun for 50 games, so I would knock them down a slight peg below the other two. But all near the 90-win range IMO.
If I had to pick an order right now…
Cards
Reds
Brewers
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
My sim has that same order, with each team a few wins ahead of the other. Is the Braun suspension official now? Also, the loss of Fielder if he doesn’t resign is pretty big (get it? Fielder big).

nolander - January 18, 2012

Yeah, they should be good for 95 wins if everything clicks.
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
Yes! Favorite to win the NL Central. They have come very close (if not matched) the production lost from Pujols. Still a lot of that depends on a few older, overused or recovering players (Berkman/Furcal, Carpenter, Wainwright) so there is a rather large error bar around this statement.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
high five!
they really need to find long term replacements in the next couple years though. Should have the money to do it, maybe they can sign Votto.
nolander - January 18, 2012
Wainwright probably makes up for Pujols, Freese and Craig have their BABIPs crater/don’t get massive power out of nowhere and aren’t very good, still arguably the best team in the division.
regfairfield - January 18, 2012
Milwaukee minus Braun for 50 won’t be pretty.
kinbote - January 18, 2012

You need to work on your short term comment skills. We don’t pull players out of thin air, something usually precedes the comparisons. Like the player that was being discussed.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Such as Theo Epstein?
Sorry, haven’t been paying enough attention

I dont know, Jesus cant even get to the AFC Championship game, so id say its possible he couldnt OPS+ over 100 as well.

He’s spread a little thin nowadays.

DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
Oops.
DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
Maybe
It doesn’t always work out that way.
Before his 6 starts against SF in 2011, Kershaw had 4 in 2010, and just one in 2009. And he was in the regular rotation for the whole year all three seasons.

Adam Kennedy really sucked last year. Splitting time among 2b/3b/DH[?], he managed .234/.277/.355/.632. If he ends up splitting time with Mark Ellis, it could be trouble.
kinbote - January 18, 2012
Aaron Miles trouble?
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012

Now that I’ve finally figured out which Hairston we have, that dude played everywhere last year.
2B—27 games
CF—11
3B—5
LF-1
SS-1
He’s also played RF in his career. Except for 1B & C, he’s done it. Might be the Neddiest signing of the offseason.

Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
The “9 positions in a game” trick always seems forced to me, something done out of the norm of regular baseball.
I am curious to know what is the record for most positions played in a single game by one player legitimately, i.e. not done solely to get that player time at a position. My guess would be something like four or five. But I would love to see a bunch of games with that. Might be a future blog post.
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
I think Campy Campaneris was the first to do it in 65 that anyone made a big deal out of. Heck of a pitcher
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
I will be waiting for one of the TBLA mods to pull the trick of playing all 11 positions in one game during the softball tournament.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
11 positions? What kind of softball do you play?
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
He has sex right after the game.
kinbote - January 18, 2012
haha @ nolander’s response below, but I was thinking for you that bench would be one of the positions. :)
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
I mean kinbote’s, and above not below. :)
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
Given how many players we have, bench will probably be my main position.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
How many do you have? I assume everyone bats and that is half the fun.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
14 at last count.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
It is probably good to have extras, because someone will inevitably not be able to play due to injury, scheduling conflict or over eating/drinking between games. But if you have 14 for any one game then it does get a little crowded unless you have people that don’t mind DHing or just playing a few innings in the field. Perfect number is around 11 or 12, but given this type of format 14 could be perfect. Hopefully, ever team has an experienced slow-pitch softball pitcher. It is a lot harder than it looks and sucks to walk 6 or 7 batters an inning.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
Do we (DT) have an experienced pitcher? I’ve played middle IF/OF my entire softball “career”.
I do not mind sitting out innings, especially after running the bases. The BLD fields have fast outfields and deep fences.
ishXdavid - January 18, 2012
Not sure. Which team is robotmadeofnails on. He is the only one I know who pitches. Hopefully the organizer placed a pitcher on each team.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
Neither, he could not make it.

Also, I wonder if the $35 entry fee covers the facility entrance fee as well?
ishXdavid - January 18, 2012
Yes, at least in past tournaments at Big League Dreams it did.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Did you guys see the game where
they move Jose Bautista over from third base to shallow right field and he subsequently caught two pop up right to him?
DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
Bautista plays RF a fair amount
I got to listen to a guy call him Juan Rivera for 2 hours on opening night in Anaheim.
nolander - January 18, 2012
I will state boldly for the record that if Juan Rivera says “fuck it” and starts pulling every ball into the left field stands and has a Bautistan 50+ home run season, the Dodgers will be strong contenders in the NL West.
Bold.

I may have felt that way until I realized how fast he was.

DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
Can I ask why you dont have a TV?
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
Apart from sports, A) It’s kinda expensive, and b) It’s a waste of time when you aren’t watching sports.
DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
Okay, that makes sense. He’s got average speed. He’s pretty much average across the board.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Inside the park HRs are usually more indicative of defensive misplay than speed.
OB12 - January 18, 2012
I may have been wrong at the time.
DodgerofTrolleys - January 18, 2012
But I still thought he had some speed.

Hey Mike
I’ve been meaning to ask you this since yesterday, but on the ESPN NBA Today podcast yesterday, Ric Bucher said if Minnesota gave a max contract to Kevin Love it would “be the death knell of the franchise.” Bucher does not think highly of Love’s game, but then again Bucher called LeBron “more of a glue guy” last year.

Ya, I’d say that’s a no-brainer (for Laker fans)
Michael White - January 18, 2012
Not sure what is wrong with the Clipper PA Announcer but he made a few flubs on Monday which reminded me of opening night.
Coming into the season Mo Williams was expected to be the starting point guard for the Clips and was making a big deal about how happy he was and how he was going to help take this team to the next level. Then they got Billups in the Amnesty deal and he was a little upset. Then they got Paul and he was like WTF. So they calmed him down, telling how valuable he was going to be coming off the bench. He was still not thrilled.
So on opening night they do the player introductions, and when it was time for Mo Williams the announcer called him Chauncy Billups. It was so awkward because he’d already announced Billups long before.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012

yeah im the same… I was big into WWF… Hogan is my all time favorite and I probably lost interest in wrestling some time after NWO went away……. but what I was saying is he talked about it on his sports show, even interviewed wrestlers… I dont know, I just never had an interest to hear it talked about on a sports talk show… but oh well.
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012

Softball Tournament Question
LFP didn’t state in the rules which bats are going to be allowed. I want to assume that only ASA bats would be allowed, but I can see “softball-guy” bringing a rolled USSSA bat because he wasn’t told he couldn’t.
ishXdavid - January 18, 2012
Good question
I’d email him. I would think no composite bats. I would also hope they provide some bats. Those things are pretty expensive and how many of us have our own softball bats?
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
I have a couple. One really good one and the first one I bought. Both are ASA bats and they will be shared with the team, of course.
ishXdavid - January 18, 2012
Ok, that’s nice. I will provide the seeds.

I have
the official bat of TBLA, as shown at the picnic:

David Young - January 18, 2012
Composite bats are standard fare
There are different certifications. ASA bats are the standard lower-league/Co-ed league bats, and USSSA bats are the hot bats that could kill someone.
Also, while this is a tournament, what’s the expected level of competitiveness? Personally, I just want to meet most of you guys and share some drinks. I don’t want to have to worry about take-out slides at second-base.

My wife just upgraded us to a balcony room instead of interior room on our summer cruise after this happened. I told her don’t worry the Carribean is warm, it’s just the sharks you have to watch out for. Plus I don’t really see myself jumping off of the balcony in an accident.

delias man - January 18, 2012
I do, shit is fun…. Its like a vegas casino in a boat, sort of…. you got casino, you got a sports bar, you got a club, you got karaoke bar, you got an auditorium with shows every night… you got alcohol everywhere. oh, and all the pools, and much more that I didnt mention… oh and you stop off at a city here and there and get to do stuff there too.
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
Yeah, cruises are great. Comfortable way to see some interesting places. I don’t see how they make money with 1,100 person staffs and all the loads of food there is to eat, plus all the entertainment and stuff.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
booze
the booze
nolander - January 18, 2012
Yes. I would like to see the pie chart of what passengers spend the most money on. I expect booze would be like 80%. They aren’t making it off of my family though. I save my drinking for games Chad Billingsley pitches.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
Do they have wifi?
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
I don’t think so. They have an internet cafe where you pay quite a bit to use their computers and internet. I think I paid $100 for it one cruise.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
man
I would think that would change these days though, as having free wifi would be a big selling point in this modern world.
nolander - January 18, 2012
Perhaps, but it totally defeats the purpose of going on a cruise.
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
Really?
Sitting by the pool
Drinking and eating
Watching the Dodgers on the IPAD
Isn’t that what you spent 1000’s to do?
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
1000s? A seven-day Mexican Riviera cruise can be done for $500/person. That covers your lodging and your food, plus entertainment. That’s a fairly inexpensive vacation. Sure the cabin is significantly smaller than a hotel room, but I don’t spend a lot of time in it. A cruise is a way for me to simply relax and enjoy. I don’t have to make decisions about where to eat, what to do, etc. etc.
David Young - January 18, 2012
Spoken like the two time defending shuffle board champion that you are!
Xeifrank - January 18, 2012
basically, you’re paying 500 for a week in a floating hotel. Or you could spend 900 to stay a week in a landlocked hotel. Which isn’t on the fucking Ocean going to multiple exotic places.
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
But you can leave it and go other places.
fbihop - January 18, 2012
gotta pay to go to those other places, now we’re in the 1k range
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
well, thats if you wanna do an excursion…. otherwise you can go to a senior frogs… but yeah you gotta pay for that… or any gum and fake silver you buy along the way.
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
Many excursions are double-digit in cost. A seven-day cruise will typically have three ports of call. If you do one in each place, < 800 simolians.
I should clarify that the $500 didn’t include gratuities.
David Young - January 18, 2012
You can leave the boat without paying for an excursion.
Nolij - January 18, 2012
Of course.
David Young - January 18, 2012
yeah… and buying drinks from the bars isnt that cheap from what I remember….now what I should of done was buy a bottle from the gift shop, because with no duties and taxes it was crazy cheap…. But now ive been told you can get the alcohol you buy from the store on the cruise until AFTER the cruise… is that true?
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
Right. You can’t buy that booze and drink it on the ship. And you are limited to how much you can bring back into the US, like 4 liters.
David Young - January 18, 2012
yeah I remember that, limit on alcohol, cigarettes, and any cuban cigar was a 1000 fine or somethin.
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
but you can usually bring a bottle or two aboard
and sneak more if you want
nolander - January 18, 2012
When you first board from the U.S. maybe. Not from the ports.
David Young - January 18, 2012
I dont think you can from the US either, because my bro and his friends got caught trying to smuggle Jack daniles in a Brisk Ice tea bottle. Couldnt bring it on…. I did buy tequilla from a port in meixco, cant remember what happened… If they brought to my room later, or after the cruise you get it also?
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
After the cruise. Or you drank it on land before you got back.

I’ve only been once… If you guys are saying this having been on a cruise, then I got nothing…. But if you havent been on a cruise, then I bet its different then you think it is… It was for me…. Only beef I had was they didnt have the USC vs Virginia Tech game on the boat, I believe Leinarts 1st start as USC QB, and all the people trying to sell you shit when you dock in mexican cities, thats about it.
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
Leinarts first start was a 22-0 pasting of then #3 Auburn @ Jordan-Hare Stadium. Where’s that SEC pride now?
ishXdavid - January 18, 2012
Yeah it was Auburn then, I guess, that sounds right.
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
Guessing it’s probably tied to the six straight BCS championships.
Eric Stephen - January 18, 2012
Yeah, but besides that, whatta they got?
mleadman - January 18, 2012
Had to get all factual, huh
The SEC was lucky that they missed USC in its prime. And this is coming from a UCLA-fan. My loathing of the SEC runs even deeper than the USC-UCLA rivalry. I hope USC runs the table next year and finally gets the SEC in the BCS Championship game.
ishXdavid - January 18, 2012
USC in it’s prime ran into Young.
Which prime are we talking about?
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
I think USC’s 2004 team that waxed Adrian Peterson’s Oklahoma team was the best one. It was definitely the most balanced. The 2005 iteration didn’t have the defense, which is why the USC-Texas game became a shoot-out.
ishXdavid - January 18, 2012
though they did play at V Tech the next year, so maybe it wasnt Leinarts 1st start…. I forgot, anyways, sports is limited on crusies, sucks.
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
Which is why you get off of the boat at the ports.

Well
it would be nice if they could be like the 70s Reds and Dodgers, good teams, good players, good managers.

Though
not very good races, most times they just blew out the division.

Right, still the games were awesome if the races were not.
Still think the opening to the 75 season was the best ever.
Phil Gurnee - January 18, 2012
Reading about the Dodgers/Reds rivalry in Posnanski’s book, The Machine, was great. I loved how the Reds hated and were confounded by Mike Marshall, and how he would taunt the shit out of them.

I may have to read this next. I would have expected the Reds to simply wear Joe Rudi faces if he was giving them shit.

though the captain does generally have a responsibility to ensure that all passengers leave the ship safely. One would usually have to be on the ship to make sure that happens.

If so, Rich Gannon?
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
If you consider Rich Gannon great, then you have very low standards.
fbihop - January 18, 2012
As a Raider he certainly was great
59, 60, 65.8, 67.6 passing percentages in his first and only 4 full years with them, and QB ratings of 86.5, 92.4, 95.5, 97.3.
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
qb rating is a joke
nolander - January 18, 2012
Lord
Anything relevant to the Rich Gannon conversation? Or just pointing out things that I don’t care about?
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
I think in order to be a great QB, you need to do it for more than just four years.
fbihop - January 18, 2012
I’m speaking more toward his time just with the Raiders. He may not be a great QB overall, but with the Raiders he was.
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
thats true
but I think he means franchise QB, and gannon wasn’t long enough for that tag

Ivdown - January 18, 2012
I know it's essentially an arbitrary number
I think it’s pretty widely accepted that any time in the 90s is pretty good, regardless of what it exactly means.
Even so, going by pass %, yards, tds and int, he was better than good in my mind with the Raiders.
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
whats the ypa
nolander - January 18, 2012
7.3 on average for the first 4 years
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
yeah, If I remember correctly, he threw alot of short passes, so you would think that would inflate his QB rating, etc.
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
Peyton Mannings for his career is 7.6
Montana’s is 7.5
Tom Brady’s is 7.5 as well. So not too far off from these HOF and to be HOFers.
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
Is that yard per completion or per attempt?
David Young - January 18, 2012
My bad that was attempt
I’ll check for completion.
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
YPA is more relevant, I think.
David Young - January 18, 2012
Gannon (his time with the raiders) – 11.5
Montana – 11.9
Brady – 11.8
Peyton – 11.7
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
You’d have to pick out Montana, Brady and Manning’s best four-year stretch to make it an apples to apples comparison.
fbihop - January 18, 2012
I was hoping no one would say that :P
The other 3 i’m comparing him to are clearly elite HOF qbs, I’m saying Gannon was good-great in his time with the Raiders.
But if you want to go ahead and ruin my entire argument with things like facts go ahead and do it! :)
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
I’m a Raider fan and I dont think he was a great QB… good yea, really good, I guess so, but I dont think any NFL gurus would consider him great.
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
When he was healthy he averaged:
26 tds 11 int 3947 yards and a 63.4 pass completion percentage. Definitely not top 5 numbers, but top 10 i’d guess most definitely at the time.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/G/GannRi00.htm

fbihop - January 18, 2012
Not at all. Not a slam against comedy teams today. They are just not nearly as well known as comedy teams were years ago.
It’s harder to become really well known these days. In 1970, if you got a network television show, you were guaranteed fame (even if for only a short amount of time.)
Out attention is so split segmented these days.
latenite - January 18, 2012
I’m sure the recognition level across the general population for the Flight of the Conchords today nowhere approaches that of famous comedy teams of the past, pre-1990.
Everybody knew who the Smother Brothers were back then. I don’t believe that is even close to being true for any comedy team today.

The 49ers will attempt to be the 11th different NFC team in 11 years to represent the NFC
in the Super Bowl.
This got me thinking, of the four sports leagues, NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL, which conference or league has gone the longest without having 10 different franchises represent them in their championship game or series.
The NFC would be the quickest since it has been done for 10 straight years but can you name the league or conference where you have to go back the furthest.
bhsportsguy - January 18, 2012
Wow
This is something I was thinking the other day, but I had no idea it was this bad. The NFC is really lacking in long term great teams. Shoot, the AFC has the Patriots, Steelers, Ravens (though with less success), and had the Colts before this year.
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
Are the Eagles the best NFC team in the last 10 years?
nolander - January 18, 2012
I think you'd have to say yes even without a Super Bowl title
They were in 4 NFC championship games the last decade or so, that’s pretty significant.
Ivdown - January 18, 2012
I would guess the American League.
David Young - January 18, 2012
I would guess the Pac12
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012

I refuse to follow such narrow constraints, there have been far more Rose Bowls than Super Bowls.
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
There have been more PCL Championships than Super Bowls.
fbihop - January 18, 2012
wikipedia is down, but I know at least when the Angels and Stars were in the PCL, there was no playoff
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
Off and on championships since 1904.
fbihop - January 18, 2012
and if the PCL and International League were sending their champions to a World Series type deal, they’d be in the conversation, possibly, not really
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
To be fair
the arrangement you are thinking of goes back to 1947 and it wasn’t the championship of anything officially related to the college football.
bhsportsguy - January 18, 2012
For sure, and the Pac-league doesn’t have the equal-ish playing field the NFL has, but it’s amazing Arizona has never made it, Cal goes back 52 years and then it’s 1965 (oregon st.) to get in the other 8

uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
You’d have to pay me to search for a state by state breakdown of NASCAR’s numbers
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
The NASCAR races in Fontana (and I think there’s one in NorCal too) always sell out.
Nolij - January 18, 2012
Have you seen the Reno 911 when Travis Junior sits with his family for the entire episode watching NASCAR? Classic
kinbote - January 18, 2012
yes
nolander - January 18, 2012
NASCAR grew on me
I think NASCAR races are very well produced for TV. Yes, the cars only turn left, but it’s nonstop action from the multiple position battles to the radio-communication between the drivers and their teams. Something is always going on, and the rapid presentation lends itself well to the speed of the race.
ishXdavid - January 18, 2012
The Sparks and Avengers and whatever the XFL team was called all won championships too.
Nolij - January 18, 2012
a championship in an 18 team domestic league in a sold out game is on a different level than the Arena Bowl
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
It was in response to his argument that “I want to include MLS because the local team is good.”
Nolij - January 18, 2012
Did Avengers win a AFL title?? were talking AFL right? if so I dont remember that…. but I do remember the XFL title, LA only city to win one baby!!
uschris0304 - January 18, 2012
Oh, maybe they only won a division or conference or whatever.
Nolij - January 18, 2012
I’m willing to let MLS slide, since ten years ago there were only ten teams
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
I will add though
it wasn’t until MLB expansion in 1961 and 1969 that this type of discussion was even possible for baseball.
For the NHL it wasn’t until the 1960s and beyond too.
It took the AFL/NFL merger in 1970 to put this together.
And further expansion and merger in the NBA in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
bhsportsguy - January 18, 2012

Josie Becker - January 18, 2012

David Young - January 18, 2012

It is the
Western Conference of the NBA. You have to go back to 1974 when the Milwaukee Bucks represented the Western Conference vs Boston in that season’s NBA Finals.
Most other leagues or conferences finish up by the early 90s, the AFC is the one that was the second longest with Cincinnati being the 10th team of the AFC to be in the Super Bowl back in 1988.
The AL is done by 1991 Minnesota, the NL by 1998 with the Padres, the NBA Eastern Conference by Chicago in 1998. Trust me the NHL was done by the 90s.
bhsportsguy - January 18, 2012
how many Western Conference titles since 1974 were won by the Lakers?
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
A cruise ship load.
David Young - January 18, 2012
Since 1979-1980
the Lakers have been in the NBA Finals 16 times, winning 10 Finals.
bhsportsguy - January 18, 2012
They’ve been in half of the last 32 Finalses. That’s crazy.
Nolij - January 18, 2012
Since coming to Los Angeles for the 1960-1961
season, they have been in 25 NBA Finals, first one in 1962. So that is 25 of the last 51 NBA Finals. They have lost more than they have won, since they went 1-8 in those previous 9 NBA Finals.
bhsportsguy - January 18, 2012
Still, you could rename the Western Conference: Lakers and Friends and not be inaccurate.
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
Going back to when the NBA starts counting these things
65 NBA Finals since 1947, the Minneapolis and Los Angeles Lakers have played in 31 of them, winning 16.
They are only NBA team to have played in a finals in each decade of the league’s existence and the only one to not go more than 9 years without an appearance.

Only time I got thrown out of a game

I don’t believe I’ve ever been thrown out.
In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever even been warned, and I’ve thrown at guys intentionally.
G.Scott - January 18, 2012
that reminds me of another story
I don’t think I’ve ever been warned either EVEN THOUGH EVERYONE THOUGHT I INTENTIONALLY HIT A GUY. Turns out that when I wasn’t looking he pulled some babe ruth bullshit and pointed to LF. I then proceeded to plunk him good, but on accident. I had a good laugh about it in the dugout when people tried to talk to me about it.
nolander - January 18, 2012
I never threw at anybody but there were a few I wish I did and many that I accidentally hit that I wish I didn’t. I remember leading off one game (18 year old) and got nailed with a fast ball in the shoulder blades, hurt like hell. The pitcher came over and apologized big time between innings. He knew I was pitching and didn’t want to get hit either. Getting hit sucks!

Haven’t seen the movie… but if the well-connected female volunteer was smoking hot, it’s probably contrived.

I find films such as these, where I’m entering a world I don’t know much about on an insider level (Moneyball would be in that category), I’m much more willing to say “I’m rooting for the hero, these other creatures are pawns to achieve a certain effect, except for the villains”
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
Also
because I’m unclear, the primary process is a matter of securing delegates to vote for you in the national convention. I assume each state has different rules for how they divide up the delegate vote, either winner take all or based on your percentage of the vote. fbihop, can you help me out?
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
Also sometimes the primaries don’t actually matter and the delegates just vote for who they feel like. Democracy!
regfairfield - January 18, 2012
Aren’t primaries structured differently for the parties as well?
/a day without Wikipedia has been tougher than anticipated
ishXdavid - January 18, 2012
differently how?
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
I think the Democrats have to secure delegates for representation at the convention, except for super-delegates who get to vote for whomever they choose.
I don’t think Republicans have that kind of structure, so primaries are just used to gauge a candidate’s chances of winning the nomination.
It’s been a few years since my last poli-sci class, so I’m probably wrong on the specifics, but I’m sure they’re structured differently.
ishXdavid - January 18, 2012
right, and Ides of March was about the Democratic primary, so that makes sense. Also makes sense why Obama-Hilary carried on till just about the end. Whereas the republican primary, if you keep losing states you’re not gonna stay in cause the delegate count is close.
Josie Becker - January 18, 2012
I'm not completely sure
I still have my old textbooks at home, so I’ll review and get back to you. I don’t want to lead you astray.
ishXdavid - January 18, 2012
Republican primaries are also usually winner-take-all, so Republican candidates know early on if they’re viable for the nomination. Democrats allot delegates based on representation, so a candidate could come in 2nd or 3rd in a primary and still be in the race with more favorable states later on in the primary schedule.
ishXdavid - January 18, 2012
that’s it, so I had them both, just didn’t remember it was split by party.

regfairfield - January 18, 2012
Repubs did it different this time
The delegates are proportioned according to the percentage of votes the candidate receives in the first 6 states. After that, it will be winner take all. This is suppose to allow the lower end candidates to stay in the race a little longer and give the Super Tuesday States in February more value (the race has already been over in January in the past).
Dodgers1981 - January 18, 2012

The last movie I almost watched all the way through
was “Patton” streaming on my iPad.
Even that one I skipped some parts.
I also watched most of “The Longest Day”
(I was in a WWII mood).
bhsportsguy - January 18, 2012
I think
The Longest day lasted longer than the war
mleadman - January 18, 2012
It is not a great movie
but I do like Robert Mitchum’s performance.
bhsportsguy - January 18, 2012
Robert Mitchum = bad ass.
His Cape Fear is from the same year.
David Young - January 18, 2012
Couple of his later movies
Friends of Eddie Coyle and Farewell My Lovely are great Mitchum vehicles

Cuban Cigars
In December I was able to go to Cuba and there was some discussion about the cigars:
To David Young, I smoked a lot and you are certainly right, they are fabulous.
I was able to bring cigars home, which is technically illegal, but it is not something they fully enforce. I declared both cigars and rum on my customs form and the only thing the agent said to me was, “Welcome Home.” For a few people in our group they made them destroy some or all of their cigars. No one got into any trouble though.

I applaud your declaration
I bet it was a little interesting waiting in that line though.
Enjoy them.
bhsportsguy - January 18, 2012
Declaring is definitely
the right move. Well played Mr. BK.
David Young - January 18, 2012
Nice. I have never actually had one, they just have the rep. When I am in Mexico, I wonder if my cruise line can recommend a store where I can be certain the Cuban cigars truly are Cuban, then I will try one. But I am smoking it before I get back to the U.S.
David Young - January 18, 2012
I could have smoked them when I was in London
just didn’t get around to it.
I have seen those shops (they are right by where the cruise ships dock, I don’t know if any of them are reputable. The last cruise I was on had a cigar parlor, if yours has one, check with them. Or you can ask the concierge.
bhsportsguy - January 18, 2012
Yeah they all do. Didn’t occur to me that I could simply by one on board!
David Young - January 18, 2012
Declaring,
Our teachers/advisors that went on our trip wouldn’t technically give us their blessing, but they said they’ve never seen anyone get in trouble while being honest with customs. Unless perhaps you’re smuggling plutonium.
David Young, you have one with your name on it at the softball tourney. Yea there are a lot of counterfeit ones out there, try to find an official seller.
BKnapp - January 18, 2012
Dude, that would be beyond generous.
David Young - January 18, 2012
It’s no problem, thanks for insisting I get my fill of them while there.
BKnapp - January 18, 2012
And yes, if you are honest with customs, I would imagine the worst thing that would happen is that they would simply make you destroy something they weren’t going to allow you to take in. After all, if you declare everything, you can’t be smuggling.
David Young - January 18, 2012
So, I should declare my heroin?
mleadman - January 18, 2012
im calling the cops

Just pay Clayton
Why is this even a debate? Just pay Kershaw. Damn I cannot wait until the Dodgers have new owners…
boxhead - January 20, 2012
He is going to get paid; on that there is no debate.
