Michael usually writes the Fab Five story in February and since it has been about a year, we thought it might be a good time to display last years results.
Based upon hand counting so numbers may be off by one or two, about 63 ballots were cast. Might have been more but what we do know is that Kershaw was on 63 ballots and all numbers are based on that starting point. If you want to get more scientific feel free to peruse the above thread and do the count yourself.
Kershaw received 39 1st place votes
Billingsley received 13 top spot votes and was on 46 ballots
Matt Kemp received 8 1st place votes and was on 46 ballots
Kuo received 5 1st place votes and was on 45 ballots
Andre Ethier received 3 number one votes and was 34 ballots
Hiroki Kuroda received four 2nd place votes and was on 24 ballots
Rafy Furcal received three 2nd place votes and was on 18 ballots
Kenley Jansen received one 1st place vote, two 2nd place votes and was on 17 ballots
Big Jon Broxton received one 1st place vote, and was on 14 ballots
James Loney received one 1st place vote, and was on 13 ballots
Jamey Carrol was on seven ballots
Casey Blake was on six ballots
Mr. Padilla received one 1st place vote on five ballots
Jerry Sands was on three ballots
Gibbons, Guerrier, and Hoffman all managed to make one ballot.
Should be big changes this year, with long time Fab Five members Kuo, Kuroda, and Broxton saying good bye. Also gone are Furcal, Carroll, Blake, Padilla, Hoffman, and Gibbons.
Of the 17 players who received a vote nine of them are gone. Can't imagine any of the new members of the team cracking the list. I'd expect the average Fab Five this year will be Kershaw, Kemp, Andre, Jansen, and an assortment of whackjobs as players like Sands, Gordon, Rubby, Rivera, Ellis & Ellis, Uribe, TGJ, Guerra, Lilly, and Capang try to weasel their way into your hearts.
| Name | Points |
| Kershaw | 275 |
| Billingsley | 161 |
| Kuo | 130 |
| Kemp | 140 |
| Andre | 87 |
| Kuroda | 63 |
| Furcal | 34 |
| Jansen | 38 |
| Blake | 27 |
| Loney | 11 |
| Sands | 5 |
| Broxton | 32 |
| Padilla | 10 |
| Carroll | 14 |
| Gibbons | 1 |
| Guerrier | 4 |
| Hoffman | 1 |

Big year coming for Dee!
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
here's hoping
he’ll probably make my top five. dude is just plain fun to watch.
court168627 - January 20, 2012
It’s a little scary how much we’re depending on him to be an integral part of our team. I’d prefer he be surrounded by more talent in the infield during his first full year. Oh well, maybe he’ll rise to the occasion. We could sure use it.
kinbote - January 20, 2012
i agree.
he still hasn’t proven any long-term ability to get on base at the major league level. i’m hoping he can perfrom like he did in september, but i know he probably can’t sustain that over a whole season.
court168627 - January 20, 2012
Who else could lead off? Gwynn?
kinbote - January 20, 2012
The younger Ellis. James Loney.
So yeah, it will be Dee
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Hopefully Dee leads off and never stops leading off for the rest of his Dodger career.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
yeah buddy….my sentiments and expectations exactly
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
I’d agree except we all know Dee would lead off even if he on based .280.
regfairfield - January 20, 2012
right
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
let’s hope that doesn’t happen….and that he’s more Sept than June
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
if dee doesn't?
maybe gwynn, maybe one of the shitty infield grounds crew, probably kennedy or hairston.
court168627 - January 20, 2012
On the other hand maybe Ned decided to put stiffs beside him so that if he struggles he’ll still be the best player on the infield.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
When his chief competition is Loney, yeah, well, I don’t know anymore.
kinbote - January 20, 2012
I only know one thing about this season. Clayton is going to be just as good peripherally as he was last year.
Two things, Jansen is going to monster up.
oh, three things
Uribe is going to “bounceback”
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
I’d fall in love in with the first chick that said she digged my peripherals

What leads a person to love Vicente Padilla that much.
regfairfield - January 20, 2012
Wining a key playoff game?
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
But people who pitch more than 70 innings a year and do not resemble the Budwiser Frogs also do that.
regfairfield - January 20, 2012
Jose Lim...
oh wait.

Pitchers who have won playoff games for the Dodgers since 1988

Kuroda

Kuo
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Kuroda had a clincher too.

game 3 nlds against the cubs! :)
Ivdown - January 20, 2012

Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Probably my second favorite game ever that I've been to
Being there after the win was amazing.
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
Besides the big grand slam in game one, Loney had the key two run double that led us to the 3 – 1 victory.
Does anyone remember where he hit that? Down the line, gapper, off the wall?
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
I thought that was the game DeWitt hit the triple in the 1st inning to get us going but no. So which game was that?
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
That's what I thought, but I think that may have been the game 3 against the Phillies
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
Yeah, that was off of Jamie Moyer in game 3.
Taylor Maricle - January 20, 2012
That’s the one Manny scored from first on right?
If so, that went to right field
Michael White - January 20, 2012
I don't remember the double
But I was looking over the box score the other day for my gigantic Kuroda article that no one read and saw Loney’s double on there.

So of the players still on the team in the spring of 2011, everyone who had one a playoff game was on someone’s fab five ballot. Kuroda, Billingsley, Kuo, and Padilla.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Leaving only Billingsley on the current roster as a pitcher with a post season victory notch on his belt.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Will be curious to see how much of the Billingsley love has waned. He does not have a lot of competition from the fifth spot, except by Gordon or Rubby.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
with the dodgers or with anyone?
if the latter, then wow. i’m legitimately shocked.
court168627 - January 20, 2012
Dodgers only, good question though.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Looks like Harang has never even seen a postseason game
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Neither has Capuano
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Lilly
has two losses in two starts over five games. Has really been whacked in the post season.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Mac the 7th, no post season appearances.
Guerrier has thrown 4.2 innings, no Wins,
That covers everyone possible, right?

Waiting for official confirmation from Dodgers, but I updated the right sidebar and the minor league deals post to include both Griff Erickson and Matt Wallach, who appear to have been invited to big league camp.
If Griff and Wallach are in fact invited (no reason to believe they aren’t, other than MLB.com not always being the most accurate in these things) there are currently 59 players invited to camp. 60 with Belisario.
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Shane Lindsey my pick to click this spring
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
I think one of the lefties make it (Grabow or Ledezma), with Josh Fields having a good shot to take the final bench spot.
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Nooooooo :(
But looking at what we got yeah that’ll probably happen.
regfairfield - January 20, 2012
Right another lefty has to make it, not saying he’ll make the team out of spring training, but I expect he’ll make some waves. I like having him and Guzman stashed. Hopefully a steal from each of the Chicago teams. Always loved Guzman’s stuff, health is the problem, perfect NRI.

it was at DS, not in San Diego. I was hoping it would be on this list. Dueling no hitters between Rubby and Harang. Harang’s lasted 8.2 innings until Uribe and Navarro double teamed to break it up and walk off. awesome.

I have a business question
If you make a contact and they hand you a business card, what’s the etiquette for the next step. Should my first email have my resume as an attachment? Or a more informal inquiry?
Josie Becker - January 20, 2012
Completely depends on the context of your meeting with them.
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
I was in a media scrum, he pulled me aside, asked me who I worked for, handed me the card saying he liked my question. He’s VP of Communications for a large company
Josie Becker - January 20, 2012
Hmmm…
Seems sending your resume right away might be too forward. Maybe an email on Monday saying how nice it was to meet him. Then say you’d love to know more about his company; perhaps you could get together for some coffee to discuss.
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
this is why I asked, this is new territory and a great lead, I don’t want to scare him off
Josie Becker - January 20, 2012

Michael White - January 20, 2012
Research the company anyway, although you may already know enough about it. If he declines the coffee follow up, I’d think it would still be prudent to inquire in a second e-mail about opportunities. Hopefully he suggests the resume and you send it then.

The next step really should be just you entering their contact info into whatever you use for such a thing.
But if the meeting was more, “Here is my business card, feel free to contact me, we’d love to have you aboard,” then by all means shoot them your resume.
Resume or not, an email to them would be cool, saying it was a pleasure meeting them at [Event X], and including your contact information in the email at the very least.

Now that Al is dead, is it time for me to return to the Raider fan fold? I don’t think I’ve actively rooted from them since Jim Plunkett was around.
David Young - January 20, 2012
it is hard to say. with Al gone they are just one of the 32 now. the mystique and “fuck the rest” ideology will be gone and it will never be the same. if you did not like that part of it, it would be a good time to get on i guess.
delias man - January 20, 2012
Only if they move to LA, rooting for a team in Oakland is only done by vagabonds and vagrants.

Maybe you already mentioned it but can somebody briefly explain?

Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and some other guy.

Ray
Jackson, he never played in the NBA
bhsportsguy - January 20, 2012 via iPhone app

You mean the guy who has the record for K/9 inning? That guy? lol
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
How so? how could he have done any better?
Jesus I keep forgetting how awesome he was:
From June 18 – Sept 28th, 2 earned runs in 32 innings, 61 K’s, 12 walks.
Heck those two earned runs is 1/3 of an inning of work for Guerrier (five runs in 5 innings in Sept for Matilda)
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Relief pitchers don't have a bunch of value
But the Dodgers sure as hell have had a handful of extremely valuable relief pitchers over the last decade haven’t they? Gagne, Saito, Kuo, Broxton, and now Jansen.

berkowit28 - January 20, 2012
It looks like the court, or some settlement, will still have to make clear whether it’s present ownership (McCourt) or future ownership who will have have to pay any remaining Bryan Stowe liability not covered by insurance. (And we can probably expect a lawsuit against insurance company too if that’s still McCourt.) I’m pretty sure that new owners will need to know what laibility they’d be taking on before they buy, so I would expect present ownership to be stuck with this unless they can settle with Stowe and insurance before selling date.
berkowit28 - January 20, 2012
That's a lot of debt.
Shaikin:
berkowit28 - January 20, 2012
No wonder he wants a billion for the team.
kinbote - January 20, 2012
He wants >1B, because people will pay >1B
Nolij - January 20, 2012
It is considering how much he paid for the team. Still looks to run a company into bankruptcy and come out smelling like a rose if he gets his One Billion plus. Pays off witchbitch and will have some nice change for his future.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
He will come out without his parking lot assets though. Considering the amount the team has appreciated, he will walk away with an appallingly low amount of money.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
He came in with a parking lot and will walk away with at least 300 Million before taxes. Not bad for Chap 11 work.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
and a divorce
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
that parking lot ended up being worth more then he is going to get in this sale
nolander - January 20, 2012
No way he walks away with that much. But even if he does, that means the team appreciated more than 800M and he found a way to make half a billion dollars disapppear.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
he never had any of the money
it was always all loans.
nolander - January 20, 2012
Jamie brought a bunch of money into the marriage, which he used to buy parking lots, and had something like $180M worth of equity in those which he leveraged with loans into buying the team.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
Yes, he screwed up, my only point is that he will still be looking pretty after the sale is done considering how he let himself get into this situation. Turning 180 Million in equity into 300 Million even after a divorce is not a bad trick.
Your other point about why he wouldn’t have at least 300 Million before taxes I’m not sure on
Sell for 1.1 Billion
Creditors 5.73
= 527 million
- 200 Million to Jamie and I get 327 Million before Taxes.
5
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
131M to Jamie, 200M in sale-related taxes/costs
Nolij - January 20, 2012
I did say pre tax all the way through.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
But those monies get taken away immediately. That money cannot be seen by Frank at all. There are other tax costs he’ll have to incur come next April.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
whatever
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
But I am curious why you say that. I pay my Capital Gains Tax same time I pay my other taxes, why would the Dodger Sale be treated any differently?
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
The $200 million in tax liability is previous taxes owed by McCourt.
So from your $527 million, you’d have to subtract both the $200 million in tax liability and the $131 million to Jamie. So it’s roughly $200 million ($196m) instead of $327 million.
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
I would have expected that previous tax liability to be part of the total amount of the creditors. If not, that makes sense, interesting that he may have 200 Million in previous Tax Liability and an estimated 200 Million Tax from the sale, and that the estimated tax on the future sale is included in the creditor amount but the previous 200 million tax liability is not.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
I guess I could simply read the story and not work from comments.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
I stand corrected
The article notes that the $200 in tax liability would be a result of the sale.
So it seems McCourt will clear something like X minus $900 million or so after the sale. At least it seems that way on the surface.
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
From the link in the article:
David Young - January 20, 2012
big difference between 80 and 200, I wonder what the low and high end estimates are on the sale price.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
i bet frank wishes it was like the auctions on storage wars
delias man - January 20, 2012
He still has the Dodger parking lots. They are not part of the bankruptcy. They’re his best chance for a profit over his debts. Hopefully, he’s so deep in debt that he will sell the parking lots to the new team owner at the same time – for a hell of a lot – rather than hold onto them to lease out and/or develop later.
$200m of those debts are estimated taxes on the team sale itself.
berkowit28 - January 20, 2012
I would think if he can just walk away from the sale even with zero, but not owing anyone, but still keeps the parking lots he’s in pretty good shape. 14 million a year for the parking lots til 2015, then it goes up, then goes up every 5 years after… He has no wife, no kids to raise anymore, I think he’ll be alright. Plus he still keeps those lots in Boston?
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012
The lots in Boston are gone.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
Damn Chris that would barely pay the yearly expenses of a society lady
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012

Just Jake - January 20, 2012
This is no longer correct
settlement between MLB and McCourt specifically left out entity that owns the parking lots
bhsportsguy - January 20, 2012
a part of me would like Frank to keep the parking lots and somehow develop them into an awesome commercial venture that does not impede on the view of the hills from within the Stadium.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Frank’s track record as a developer is spotty at best. He never developed the Boston parking lots despite making a lot of noise. Might be better off with that dude in the ownership sweepstakes who built The Grove and Americana for that.
David Young - January 20, 2012
Oh, I don’t care if they do get developed, I just would not mind Frank sticking around. He does not bother me, his wife did.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Right
although I still expect any billion dollar offer to demand the inclusion of the parking lots. They won’t want to be dealing with Frank after the sale.
That is Jon Weisman’s stance too.
David Young - January 20, 2012
that is easily taken care with a long term lease for parking rights during the sale negotiation.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
If it’s valuable, the billionaires will want it. You know they will. Frank will have a price. It will be meetable.

B. When they get the new media deal, this will be hard to for the new ownership to do
C. Given the new restrictions, they should be able to increase it and not impact the bottom line too much
bhsportsguy - January 20, 2012
I’m expecting
a. A complete overhaul of current management with no one making the cut from Ned to DeJon by this time next year.
b. At a minimum 120 – 130 Payroll but would not be surprised that within three years they are not knocking at 150
c. A huge splash within 24 months

Read a book.
iiidown - January 20, 2012
my pokicy is
I only eat McDonalds at airports
mleadman - January 20, 2012
You have that policy because of the restriction of choices at airports.
I would argue that you are in a similar situation at the courthouse.
Humma Kavula - January 20, 2012
especially airports in countries not named America
Hollywood Joe - January 21, 2012
ive never been to jury duty before (knocking on wood) thank god.
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012
Have you ever voted?
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
yes… I mean Ive gotten jury duty notices, but never had to actually go in…. it has been awhile since ive even gotten a notice though, and as I say that, probably means there will be one in my mailbox today.
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012
They use voting records
and DMV records now
bhsportsguy - January 20, 2012
I've never voted yet I've had jury duty
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
voting isnt a requirement
registration is the key
mleadman - January 20, 2012
registered? but as BH said, now they use DMV
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Nah
Politics aren’t my thing, and I’m not going to vote not really knowing anything about the people I’d be voting for.
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
I try to bring up the subject of politics and Eric tells me to shut the fuck up. Come to think of it I try to bring up any subject and Eric tells me to STFU.
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
True story
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
:)
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
And they reciprocate by not making any decisions that affect you.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
ha ha
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
That’s very thoughtful of them :)
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
That does not explain
your sports behavior
mleadman - January 20, 2012
ohhhhh
Burn :(
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
I’m lost….burn on who?
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
Me
He’s saying I talk about sports even though I don’t know anything about them, lol.
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
All in jest I’m sure…..because I’ve learned quite a bit from you over the last couple of years
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
The only thing I’ve learned from Bobby is not to tell a group of fucking strangers who would make the clueless girls look nice, anything about my private life that was true related to romance.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Oh, and that Kuroda was awesome
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
damn right he was
And you people, except for Nolander, couldn’t post anything about it? Bastards!
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
Consider it the silent treatment, like when the pitcher hits a home run and everyone hides in the clubhouse
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
I'm sure I truly hit a home run with that fan post ;)
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
I was the one that rec’d it.
David Young - January 20, 2012
Should we front page him over the weekend when we don’t care what the content is?:)
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
lmao
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
I didn't see it was rec'd :)
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
I've learned a lot from 2010 Bobby as well
That guy is a dumbass. 2012 Bobby knows to keep his mouth shut a lot more, haha.
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
guess that means
You’re gonna have a bounce back year
Tommy Blackjack - January 20, 2012 via iPhone app
Me specifically?
That’s cool, though it’s likely just about Clayton Kershaw or Albert Pujols if you learned it from me, haha.
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
Of the regular posters on here I don’t think I’ve ever thought to myself “he or she doesn’t know shit about baseball”. I feel like intelligent conversations can be held by all.
There is a troll however I couldn’t make that statement about….while keeping a straight face
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
That's true
Just about everyone brings something to the table. I really enjoy your stories about the young players that you’ve met and watched.
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
:) It’s sad that I don’t see anyone anymore, except for Sandy, Tommy and Uncle Ron. All I have are stories now :(
It was also a sad day when Sandy said I was too old to call him Uncle Sandy anymore
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
That’s what Sandusky asked the kids to call him.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
was waiting for that….nice delivery ;)
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
Those kids also can’t listen to Enter Sandman any more.
David Young - January 20, 2012
Wow
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
And that makes sense then

and right now that price seems high
mleadman - January 20, 2012
At least you have the internet! Remember when your only entertainment for jury duty was that day’s newspaper and a crossword puzzle book?
David Young - January 20, 2012
Even worse now that no one wears skirts, not even a gam to gander at.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
this comment brought to you by the 1940s
Hollywood Joe - January 21, 2012
they have jigsaw puzzles here. I’d bet $1000 that there’s missing pieces in every one
mleadman - January 20, 2012
You have an Ipad, what on earth can you be complaining about?
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
i’ve got both a laptop and my ipad. i’m still bored. This will result in unneeded ipad app purchases
mleadman - January 20, 2012
Write a Fan Post! Tell us about attending the first game played by the Hollywood Stars or something.
David Young - January 20, 2012
Given your comments
that is a victory for anyone who could end up with you on their jury
bhsportsguy - January 20, 2012
I’d love Chris on my jury
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
EG Marshall was the last to turn, but he did eventually turn.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
I thought that was Lee J. Cobb.
EG Marshall turned when he realized that nobody sleeps with their glasses on.
Lee J. Cobb said, “Goddam kids, you work your HEART out!”
Humma Kavula - January 20, 2012
That’s what I meant, thanks.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
I love E.G. Marshall when he turns. He brings up the whole subject, and then they all start arguing about whether or not she had the pinch marks from the glasses on the bridge of her nose, and the argument gets more and more heated — with Marshall saying nothing — and then the movie iust cuts to him and he says, “I saw them.” And it’s QUIET. And he says, “Nobody sleeps with their glasses on. Nobody.” And he’s turned.
Humma Kavula - January 20, 2012
It’s brilliant. I show it to my post-AP students when we talk about game theory.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
I like when Ed Begley is finally humbled
Just holding his head in his hands. “not Guilty”
mleadman - January 20, 2012
Lee J Cobb was definitely
channeling Johnny Friendly in that movie
mleadman - January 20, 2012
yeah…. If im every on a jury, just go on the stand, have your defense lawyer ask you what your favorite sports teams are…. If they are atleast 1 of my favorite teams, then I know dam well you wouldnt do something like that, and ill set you free baby…. I got my fellow fans back…. I aint sending no Dodger/SC/Laker/Kings/Raider fan to jail.

To bad I root for the Angels / UCLA / Ducks / Chargers / Clippers
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
yeah, then I cant help you…. But maybe I can suggest the possibility of parole for you…. Maybe 5 years of hard time will change your mind on what teams you want to root for. Or just move your trial to the OC then.
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012
really?
I hate raider fans. i would sentence one in a minute. even innocent ones.

uschris0304 - January 20, 2012
did his forehead tell you that?
nolander - January 20, 2012
yeah, you can tell alot about a person from their forehead.
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012

Where are the good courts for lunch while on jury duty?
Downtown? Burbank? Glendale? Maybe San Fernando?
I got stuck out at Lancaster once for two days, there was nothing within walking distance, but at least driving a few miles there is easy.
David Young - January 20, 2012
Malibu
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
As I recall, Santa Monica wasn’t bad, but maybe I’m mistaken.
I hear LAX courthouse is a disaster, but I could be wrong.
Humma Kavula - January 20, 2012
I’ve done LAX the last few times, it’s ok, if you have to do it at all. Beverly Hills was probably nicer, just the parking sucks.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
The one at the 405 and 105? Nothing in walking distance, but easy drive into Manhattan Beach.
David Young - January 20, 2012
downtown court is next to the red line, so I’d go to Langers for lunch. This one is on Hill and Washington, so its by the blue line, but i don’t know the stops for the blue line, so i decided not to venture onto it
mleadman - January 20, 2012

Big Bang Theory is my new favorite show

…pal
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Where’s the gin? Where’s Humma when you need em’?
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
Not watching Big Bang Theory, I tell you that much.
Not that I gave it a fair chance. I watched the first forty-five seconds of the show and decided that I didn’t need to watch a show that made fun of people like me and my wife.
Humma Kavula - January 20, 2012
On Wednesday Night, Jon Stewart showed a clip of some Congress Fool discussing the Internet Freedom bills and he proclaims “Let’s just bring the Nerds here”. Jon did his classic double take, then quietly said " I think he means experts".
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
The show doesn’t really make fun of the nerds, just Sheldon, and noone is really like Sheldon. If you don’t watch anything that makes fun of short fat cousins, well, then, you’re missing a lot of shows.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
Sheldon is by far my favorite character on the show
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
Bride is obviously one of those smart dudes, so you’re the hot chick?
David Young - January 20, 2012
I am now picturing Bride as Amy Farrah-Fowler.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
my parents watch it
because it reminds them of me in high school.
Maddz - January 21, 2012
I don't get the love for that show
It seems really forced.
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
Then you must not think real scientists spend their time playing role playing games, having take out every night, can’t talk to women, speak fluent Klingon, read every comic book, and basically still act like………
a 13 year old
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
That said
The show is funny
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
I have been watching it more and more recently, but I still don’t think the show is laugh out loud funny, though it does it get a chuckle fairly often. I identify with a lot of the content, the Green Lantern shirts and whatnot, but the humor does seem a little too forced.
Ms. Kuoco is nice to look at, btw.
OB12 - January 20, 2012
Is that the blonde?
That’s the only reason why I’d watch an episode now.
Ivdown - January 20, 2012
She’s hot
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
Indeed. There must’ve been a chill in the air during filming for the episode I watched last night. Oh my.

uschris0304 - January 20, 2012

uschris0304 - January 20, 2012
Pauly D was signed by 50 cent btw
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
serious? thats crazy…. Is Pauly D really that good of a DJ? never seen or heard his work.
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012
50 is a good business man, I’m sure he’s capitalizing on the popularity and not necessarily the talent
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
right, thats what I was thinking.
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012
I don’t know what this means.
To a minor league contract?
Michael White - January 20, 2012
they are putting out a headphone line together
delias man - January 20, 2012
Ha Ha but no Mike. He signed him to the GUnit label….plus 50 is in the head phone business following Dr. Dre’s footsteps. So he’s got Pauly D set up for his own line of DJ headphones.
you guys who like hip hop should check out www.rapbasement.com
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
How much are these headphones? like 2 or 3 hundred? not worth it to me
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012
between 2 and 3 hundo. The Dre phones are fucking sick though. I’d never pay that for headphones but they are the best I’ve ever heard.
VeroJoe - January 20, 2012
yeah no question they are very nice headphones.
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012

Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Wild guess: Do you think it was Sands’ request? Rivera got 21, which was something he had in the past.
silverwidow - January 20, 2012
Probably. I bet he took 47 because that’s what Mitch Poole told him to take last year.
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
I sense a Michael Jordan/North Carolina connection. :)
silverwidow - January 20, 2012
What was the old joke: Dean Smith was the only person who could hold Michael Jordan under 20 points a game?
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Because Josh Fields really wanted to be #33.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
I didnt know this either… thats cool, way better number then 47 IMO.
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012

delias man - January 20, 2012
The Purple One wants to buy from Frank?
David Young - January 20, 2012

Nolij - January 20, 2012
The Office is pretty horrible these days. Watching last night’s episode… So bad.
fbihop - January 20, 2012
It was pretty stupid. So, the game plan is to do a “will they/won’t they” with Andy and the receptionist? Original.
Michael White - January 20, 2012
The Gabe/Ryan thing where they were trying to show Robert love was great.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
I wish they’d just get rid of Gabe. There is no reason for him to be there anymore.
fbihop - January 20, 2012
I’d tend to agree. Maybe Robert can take him back to Florida and we can be done with them.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
I’d rather they give the new brunet some play. It was a lame night all around 30 Rock should fold it’s tent. Tina seems to have run her course. The only thing that made me laugh in P&R was Andy running into the ambulance but since we had seen the trailer 2 Zillion times, it kind of lost it’s mark. The whole Bobby thing was lame.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
They’re clearing moving towards the new brunette having feelings for Jim…the way she asked where he was a few times last night. Again, this show is now as subtle as a dump-truck.
Michael White - January 20, 2012
Here’s a great pic of the 1991 Dodgers. Brett Butler must be glad that Greg Smith was there to go between (skinny!) Tommy and him.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
At least two of those players are dead: Tim Crews and Mike Sharperson. And both of Kal Daniel’s knees.
David Young - January 20, 2012
Should be able to cobble together a decent blog name from that information.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Kal Daniels was a sabermetrician’s wet dream before sabermetrics were popular.
silverwidow - January 20, 2012
He raked for my 1987 Strat-O-Matic team!
Dude hit .300 / .402 / .514 / .916, 151 OPS+ through age 26 in just over 500 games, almost 2000 PA, and then the knees were shot. Hit .247 / .330 / .391 / .721, 104 over the next two seasons and was out of baseball.
David Young - January 20, 2012
Made me think of Matt Nokes for some reason, who hit 32 HRs in 1987 (his first year) and never quite got there again.
kinbote - January 20, 2012
But Tim Crews isn’t in that picture.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
I just assumed; he was on that team. Who’s the mustachioed goof behind Butler?
David Young - January 20, 2012
Jim Neidlinger, I believe.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
I recognize everybody but #64 and #20. At least I think I do, if Braulio Castillo really is the fellow to Fernando’s right.

nolander - January 20, 2012
I’ve never had to serve on a jury.
fbihop - January 20, 2012
I almost got selected once, which I thought was kind of cool cos they didn’t eject me once I said my father was an attorney, but the DA (like, peon from the DA’s office, really) and the defense attorney messed up and poisoned the jury pool. I heard later that it was like the 3rd group they had to scratch. Judge was PISSED.

I just remembered that I did have jury duty early last year but I called in for my five days and they never needed me.

If they are charged and in the courtroom
They are guilty!
68elcamino427 - January 20, 2012
nooo, not if the glove doesnt fit, then I have to acquit!
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012

Ivdown - January 20, 2012

David Young - January 20, 2012
Memory is spotty but I thought you could ask for any court? I remember being told that the Malibu court is easy to call in and never get used to so I transferred to them and never had to go in.
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
Looks like you can change the date but not the location.
I wouldn’t mind serving. The commute break alone will be like a mini-vacation. With my laptop in hand, Eric might get an article out of me.

Regarding the NRI uni #s (from the last thread)
Isn’t it customary for NRIs that have had more than a smidge of MLB experience to be issued numbers in the lower half of the range of 00-99?
David Young - January 20, 2012
Sounds fair
NRIs who get “real” numbers are still sent packing most of the time.
silverwidow - January 20, 2012
Yes, although Juan Rincon was #90(?) last year. And Scab Mahay had a high number too IIRC.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
Yep, Mahay was number 80. LOLance was 81.
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Any players left in MLB not with the players’ association? I know Millar and Donnelly were two of the last ones. And Bonds of course.
silverwidow - January 20, 2012
Doesn't look like there are any more
This article from 2009 lists five replacement players still playing at that time:
Brendan Donnelly
Matt Herges
Ron Mahay
Jamie Walker
Kevin Millar
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
You mean Eric Stuckenschneider isn’t still playing?
Nolij - January 20, 2012
didn’t someone offer an nri to mahay?
court168627 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
Yeah, but sometimes it depends on availability I suppose.

Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012

Nolij - January 20, 2012
dam, was hoping Raiders would hire him if they end up filling their HC spot with a GB guy. Dont really want Moss. Packers D wasnt good, why promote one of thier defensive coaches? Raiders better move soon before everyone is gone… Need to fill every coaching spot pretty much.
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012
They’re going to hire Rick Nuheisel.
KellyStephen - January 20, 2012
I will refer to the players and staff as Philbin’s People.
When he asks his staff a question and they respond, does he ask, “final answer?”
David Young - January 20, 2012
No Andrea Bargnani for Toronto tonight. Wonder if he will still be out Sunday against the Clips. Not that it should matter.
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
The more important question, will CP3 play on Sunday?
Phil Gurnee - January 20, 2012
On one hand, I think yes because Paul will be chomping at the bit to play. But on the other hand, VDN could say, “look, it’s fucking New Jersey. Take Sunday off and we don’t play until Wednesday against the Lakers.”
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Except it’s Toronto but that’s not important now
meercatjohn - January 20, 2012
Oh yeah, that’s what I meant.
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Toronto is like North… New JERsey.
Nolij - January 20, 2012
I miss that SNL skit
KellyStephen - January 20, 2012
or, I was implying that VDN is dumb :)
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Toronto… yeah thats what im thinking… they are 4-11, so I think Clips keep Paul out til Wednesday, just to be safe….
uschris0304 - January 20, 2012
and then whip the Lakers sorry ass on wednesday, after Howard destroys Bynum tonight, partly thanks to Shaq’s words… Thanks Shaq.

Jon Weisman has a great post up about Every other team’s most valuable Dodger. An idea so great, I wish I would have thought about it.
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
That team would win a few games.
fbihop - January 20, 2012
Indeed, what a great idea
meercatjohn - January 20, 2012
If Steve Finley is on there
why not Russel Martin
nolander - January 20, 2012
Because Al Downing won 20 games for both teams, not many pitchers have ever done that
meercatjohn - January 20, 2012

nolander - January 20, 2012
Though one could argue that
Manny and Derek Lowe could be the Red Sox representative too.
bhsportsguy - January 20, 2012
The Red Sox seem to have most choices:
Pedro
Manny
Lowe
Smith
that is a ton compared to the other teams
meercatjohn - January 20, 2012
I keep hitting Z to see the next post, driving me crazy.
meercatjohn - January 20, 2012
so its one person per team?
nolander - January 20, 2012
yes
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Someone put in Furcal which gives Jon a SS, he has to drop Baker but I like the choice. I’m trying to find a KC better then Belcher.
meercatjohn - January 20, 2012
Gibson :)
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Offerman
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
I had suggested Offerman but Furcal is the better SS choice. Gibby for KC works if we can find a better Tiger then Belcher. Belcher did not do much for KC. You’d think in the long history of Dodgers and Tigers someone had a better dual career then Belcher.
meercatjohn - January 20, 2012
Ernie Harwell!
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Never mind, Belcher was actually good with KC so Belcher at KC and Gibby with Tigers is the best bet
meercatjohn - January 20, 2012
I only noticed in passing as I was at lunch that the Indians acquired Kevin Slowey for Zach Putnam and immediately thought it was a deal with Minnesota.
But the Rockies acquired Slowey in December, for Daniel Turpin. Which means the Rockies had Slowey for all of 45 days. Weird.
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
They will regret that deal as much as they regret not giving Paulino a chance. Nice git by the Indians.
meercatjohn - January 20, 2012
Slowey would of never of worked in Colorado I think. I like him, just not in Coors.
NotJoeTorre - January 20, 2012

If Jayson had said this two months ago he might be right, how many free agent agents will be answering the phone on Jan 20th, 2013?
meercatjohn - January 20, 2012
who are the prime free agents next year? would any of them fit our needs?
funkyjam - January 20, 2012
Here's some...
Cole Hamels
Matt Cain
Zack Greinke
B.J. Upton
Andre Ethier
Shane Victorino
Mike Napoli
Josh Hamilton
silverwidow - January 20, 2012
Napoli? Scioscia said he’s a lousy catcher.
KellyStephen - January 20, 2012
If money is no object
Kershaw
Hamels
Greinke
Cain
Billingsley
Worry about Lilly and Capang later…
silverwidow - January 20, 2012
Bills better show me something this year. Dude pissed me off last year.
Cain feels like he’s on the verge of some major arm issues to me. Otherwise, we’re cool.

Hamels
Greinke
Eric Stephen - January 20, 2012
Yeah, i stopped reading when I realized “Shane Victorino” and “prime free agents” were in the same list.
KellyStephen - January 20, 2012
thank you
the pitchers intrigue me but…
Call me crazy but I’d rather just fill in the roster with prospects from our system (mostly anyway.) Unless its a position we are short at like, 3rd base, 2nd base, catcher(GO GRIFF!) We have plenty of pitchers and outfielders so close to the bigs, I see no reason to sign anyone next year, any of those guys anyway. Just because we have the money doesn’t mean we should go out and spend it and we probably will
but I’m no expert. this is just some romantic notion I have. Can anyone understand what I’m saying.
funkyjam - January 20, 2012
clearly
i am crazy.
funkyjam - January 20, 2012

Taylor Maricle - January 20, 2012
yes
clearly. we will look stupid if we don’t sign one of them, but a lot can change in a year.
funkyjam - January 20, 2012
Greinke and Hamilton.
Hamilton/Kemp would be sickness.
kinbote - January 20, 2012

Gus Grissom died in a launch pad accident at age 40
Wally Schirra died at age 84 in 2007
Gordon Cooper died at age 77 in 2004.
Deke Slayton died at age 69 in 1993, he did not fly in the original Mercuy program but later flew in 70s.
John Glenn (age 90) and Scott Carpenter (age 86) are the last two remaining Mercury Astronauts.
One thing to note, all of these men were in their mid-late 30s or early 40s when the program began over 50 years ago.
bhsportsguy - January 20, 2012

i dont think loney is tradeable anyway
Nobody wants a first baseman at his salary that puts up his numbers.

not sure if they do them every march, but if they do, it’ll be interesting to see how close they get to the Dodgers sale price that will be announced only a couple weeks later
G.Scott - January 21, 2012
huh. It’ll be interesting to see how much control MLB has over the sale. But I can’t imagine a group bidding $800k and expecting to be a player
Josie Becker - January 21, 2012
well yeah, but in March 2011 I don’t think anyone expected people to seriously be talking about a $1.2-$1.5bil sale price.
Hell, in just the last couple months we’ve heard $800m-$1b and thought “Wow, that’s a lot”. Then we heard “$1-1.2b” and though “Wow, that’s a lot”. Now, we hear $1.2-$1.5 and we think “Wow, that’s a lot. What happened to $800mil?”
Some of it has to do with what exactly is for sale having changed, some of it is the type and number of bidders involved that weren’t there last time, some of it is simply being a year closer to the Fox tv deal expiring. The only thing I know is, no one knows a thing.

Looks like. Reports are that they’re gonna put that money towards Oswalt and I guess even if they don’t upgrade at shortstop the difference between Oswalt and Wakefield is greater than the difference between Aviles/Punto/Iglessias and Scutaro.

That was BS to cover the immunity from prosecution and presidential pardon he was given if he shut up and quit. He wasn’t so concerned (though others may have been) with the time and attention that would have been devoted to his “personal vindication” as the certain personal consequences he’d receive when he failed to do so: immediate impeachment, trial by congress, loss of presidency, subsequent trial in court, and jail time – like his subordinates in crime all served. He received some of the shame and ignominy, but missed the jail time. Ford – and, some people felt at the time, the country – got breathing space and an end to the crisis. Others felt the country would have done better to judge and punish the chief miscreant.

regfairfield - January 22, 2012
nice
one of those situations where having a text buddy is better than twitter (thanks K3vo!)
apparently though, it’s not tweeting that crashes twitter, but the refreshing for new tweets. Which happens everytime you tweet. It’s confusing.
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
Makes sense. Tweeting is simple. “Put ‘Flaccowns’ into the database”
Receiving tweets is harder. “Get all of the people that this person follows then check if any of them have made tweets since they last refreshed.” First one is straight forward, second one involves a lot of sorting through a gigantic database.
regfairfield - January 22, 2012
right, and most of the twitter apps make a call to the server every time you get to the top of your feed, which is why it’s the refreshing that kills twitter

Julio Nievas - January 22, 2012
they didn’t think they could make a field goal from there

low percentage for the kicker and even if you make it Brady only needs 3 to beat you

The Ravens just can't get it done the last decade to make the SB even though they've had so many great teams
Then again the AFC has had 3 other dynasty teams in the Pats, Colts, and Steelers to contend with.

They are probably glad the Patriots won.
They’ll get either Pats-Giants rematch.

Pure Azure - January 22, 2012
Yeah, hate to see games lost by kickers. That 3rd down pass in the end zone was pretty close to a catch. In slow mo, he easily had one foot down in the end zone with possession (before ball got knocked loose), not sure what the rule is.
Xeifrank - January 22, 2012
incomplete
gotta complete the catch
no controversy here
Hollywood Joe - January 22, 2012
How many feet do you need to have down?

2 feet and make a football move or possess the ball thru the entire process

Ok, only one foot hit before defender swatted at ball.

Hollywood Joe - January 22, 2012
hate to say it, but let's be honest
there is a racial component. NFL and NBA have strictest showboating laws, while you can beat the shit out of someone in hockey and it’s fine.
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
what’s Hockey?
I don’t like whiteboys showboating either – Gastineau was the father of a bunch of that shit and I hated his ass
Joy and enthusiasm are great – displays of ego are ugly for me
Hollywood Joe - January 22, 2012
In New York, New England, hockey definitely a thing, but I see your point
I guess my point is that black culture in America historically has a component of showboating. And historically that, and whiteboys like Elvis copying that, has been met with strong resistance
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
But it is considered unsporting to do the Dirty Bird after pulling someones jersey over their head.
regfairfield - January 22, 2012
thats the sport though
how can you really showboat in baseball or hockey?
Joey Joe - January 22, 2012
How dare Lastings Milledge high five fans Ty Cobb would have never done that I mean sure he probably killed a guy but he respected the game.

BaldBilly - January 22, 2012

G.Scott - January 22, 2012
Also
it apparently predated internet photos since i can’t find one anywhere, but Carlos Perez used to celebrate every single time he struck someone out, like he had never done it before and would never do it again. Surprised he didn’t get drilled more often. Maybe because the other pitcher didn’t want to get drilled back. They should have though, since Perez was more likely to miss his target than hit it.
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
I think it went from pissing people off, to being reluctantly tolerated because it was just expected, to finally being fully tolerated because it only happened like once/week. Then the innocent Gatorade can got the shit beat out of it, and Carlos vanished.
EMDarrow - January 22, 2012
yes but if people showboat in hockey you then proceed to beat the shit out of them. Self-policing works best, but Svengali don’t like it.
Pure Azure - January 22, 2012
that’s basically my point, sports with black people need rules to prevent fights, whiter hockey and baseball are fine with fights and beanballs
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
I was agreeing with you in my own way :)
Pure Azure - January 22, 2012
soccer is played by more black people than any sport in the world
are there rules preventing celebrations there?
Joey Joe - January 22, 2012
It’s not predominantly played by blacks in the US, and that’s what she was referring to — North American sports leagues.
Pure Azure - January 22, 2012
Hmm.
There’s less fighting now in the NHL than there was before the strike.
I wonder if there was antishowboating in the MLB before integration.
Maddz - January 22, 2012
Yes
because you’d get a fastball to your unprotected dome
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
Mostly
there is less showboating in baseball because it is easily moderated by the players.
In football, hockey or basketball, if you go after a player on the other side for showboating, it’s you who gets the penalty. In baseball, the enforcer gets a warning and the showboater gets a “Told you so” look from his own manager.
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
I mean, there’s still showboating, but then you get Kersh screaming “BRING THAT SHIT TO ME”
it’s just …more muted. Baseball: Sports, but quieter
Maddz - January 22, 2012
not that I'm disagreeing with Josie's point
I’m just curious about the precedents set before Blacks were allowed to play with the white kids.
Also, I feel that there is a degree of showboating in the NBA that we consider normal that in another sport (like baseball, which is probably the most extreme…or golf, I guess, cos that would be just a huge dick move) wouldn’t fly.
Maddz - January 22, 2012
I guess tennis as well.
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
though I think golfers intentionally Teeing off towards their opponent after he celebrates a nice tee shot would put an end to that pretty quickly.
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
I tied it simply to race, but it’s a flawed thesis. Truly, these NBA and NFL “no fun” rules came about not only when black athletes became the majority in the sports (late 80s, 90s) but as black culture was mainstreaming AND inner cities were becoming murder pools.
I feel like the rules were reactionary to that mess, and no longer applicable to the current climate…but yes there is an allowed about of showboating in the NBA and NFL that would get you plunked in the nuts in baseball, and probably does get you punched in the nuts in the NFL.
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
i’ll tell you this much, the guys who celebrate the most on TDs meet one or more of the following criteria:
A) They don’t score often
B) They are attention hounds
C) They aren’t the receivers who go over the middle very often.
Linebackers fucking love when a guy celebrates in the endzone because next time he runs a slant route, if the ball goes to him, he’s getting leveled.
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
if they aren't trying to him them as hard as possible on every play anyways
they are a fail linebacker
nolander - January 22, 2012
fair enough, but no doubt there is a difference between wanting to make the tackle, and wanting to lay someone out
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
like when the bengals linebacker nearly murdered the pit reciever after ward broke that guys jaw
nolander - January 22, 2012
I don’t think that is really true anymore. The NFL may have cut down on certain types of celebration, but almost everyone does it still. I don’t think players even react to it anymore unless it is a blowout, a chippy game, or the celebration was in someones face.
VegasBlues - January 22, 2012
it’s not flawed, i just wonder about things :)
Maddz - January 22, 2012
oh no, with you, I just have this paper I wrote last year on the language of baseball as it relates to the ideal of the pastoral, that my professor wanted me to tie into baseball’s resurgence in popularity during the late 80s, 90s, specifically as it relates to the renaissance of the baseball movie…
we had this theory that it related to inner city violence, but I could never connect everything, just correlate
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
wonder if it was a move back to American values in the face of Communism though the 80s is way late for that.
Maddz - January 22, 2012
I’d tie the rise of the NFL/Rambo/Rocky type films as American values in face of Communism with Baseball/?/? films that reached for pastoral values as cities were crumbling.
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
it was the return of "family values"
and all that with Reagan.
Hmm. I’m not all up on my 80s movies as I should be, but all I can think of is Point Break and that seems wrong somehow.
Maddz - January 22, 2012
oh that would be good, not just looking at pop culture but tying in political rhetoric.
I think we have to look at the resurgence of the family movie (Disney, Jim Henson, et all) as the movie tie in.

Here we go Josie, did this guy explain the rules well :P
Ivdown - January 22, 2012
just starting to get into it on twitter : )
I like that he used sudden death to explain the proceedings, but still started with exception and then reiterated old rules
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
I don't think it's ever going to be easy
It’s a complicated rule.
Ivdown - January 22, 2012
It’s still sudden death overtime unless the receiving team scores a field goal on their opening drive. Then both teams will have opportunity to possess the ball.
Think about these weird loopholes. If the team that received the kickoff fumbles on their opening drive, the defense advances the ball, and then fumbles itself, and it’s recovered by the offense; that offense could win the game with a field goal.
With me? If after kicking a field goal, the scoring team recovers a fumble on the kickoff, they could win it with a second field goal. Because the other team had the opportunity to possess the ball.
Confused? Read my opening sentence again.
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
They wouldn’t even need a second field goal. They would win right when they recovered the fumble.
VegasBlues - January 22, 2012
right, mea culpa
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
its an easy rule
You can no longer win the game simply by winning the coin toss and kicking a FG on your first posssession.
If that happens, the opposing team gets a chance to have the ball.
Joey Joe - January 22, 2012
now its sudden death

this is two teams, years later, who won multiple playoff games against very good teams (the Giants winning on the road) who deserve to play for a championship.
LSU and Alabama probably deserved to play for a championship too, but this one leaves no room for argument.
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
and ya know
the last time they played in the super bowl it was awesome instead of lame
nolander - January 22, 2012
there’s that.
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
I hated that Super Bowl. Stupid underdogs ruining history
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
We should give back the 1988 world series
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
eh, neither the Mets nor the A’s had anything like a Perfect Season to cap off
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
this begs the question
which is the best i can come up with given the circumstances of both sports
Game 7 of the World Series, Broham is pitching a perfect game: what do you do? GO
Maddz - January 22, 2012
hit a bomb, duh
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
serious answer
what inning, how many outs, what’s the score, what batter am I in the lineup, are we playing in an AL or NL park, how is our pitcher doing, what is the momentum of the series like, who is available in the bullpen for both teams?
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
Well, it’s game 7 of the World Series.
If you don’t go balls out for victory, do you really deserve to be there?
Maddz - January 22, 2012
sure, and it’s hard to be mad if the leadoff guy led off the ninth inning with a bunt single in a tie game in that situation, but I thought we were talking about championship games sucking because there is no storyline or the winner ruins the storyline.
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
I think as an athlete, you pay thinking you can win no matter what the circumstance, but as a sports writer, I’d be pissed if Broham hit a dinger. Like throwing my laptop on the field pissed.
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
so you can't wear team colors
or cheer but you can defenestrate laptops?
interesting gig, sports writing
Maddz - January 22, 2012
I believe Cristiane Amanpour defenestrated her laptop after the failed annexation of Puerto Rico, adding “Come On!”
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
oh man no it was amazing
I laughed so hard
Maddz - January 22, 2012
go Giants
beat Tom Brady again
Joey Joe - January 22, 2012
eh
Go Giants I guess.
NotJoeTorre - January 22, 2012
New revalation
The two teams I hate the most are named The Giants. Pretty convenient.
Ivdown - January 22, 2012
any reason other than your team played its worst game of the season and they happened to be on the other side of the field that day?
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
apparently of all the shitty people in football
he has chosen eli to be the one he hates the most.
nolander - January 22, 2012
if I were Eli I would be sad because not only am I the lesser Manning, I do not get to hang out with Justin Timberlake all the time.
Maddz - January 22, 2012
and by extension
Jessica Timberlake
G.Scott - January 22, 2012
Sports hate isn’t rational, though when a team and a player beat your favorite team, that’s enough of a reason for me.
Ivdown - January 23, 2012
It's not one game
It’s been the 2007-2008 NFC Championship game then 4 years of hate building up, then culminating with a 15-1 season down the drain then the Giants making the Super Bowl again.
Ivdown - January 23, 2012
Hollywood Joe...
…just saw your comment on Band of Brothers. The series is outstanding; I own it and watch it every now and then.
Here’s the thing…the book is even better. You should check it out.
KellyStephen - January 22, 2012
Bummer for the 49ers
that Chuck Muncie is their punt returner.
Xeifrank - January 22, 2012
Dude’s dad should have done a better job at generally managing his family roster.
Eric Stephen - January 22, 2012
With the Pats and the Giants in this year’s Super Bowl, I’ll probably just end up rooting for the E-Trade baby.
Nolij - January 22, 2012
You made it weird.
Eric Stephen - January 22, 2012
Down by 1 with under a minute to go in the game and Matt Barnes is shooting 3’s? Interesting (Only seeing game via Gamecast)
VegasBlues - January 22, 2012
Pau Gasol is having his worst scoring year of his career so far. Derek Fisher is having his 2nd worst shooting season of his career (only topped by his rookie year where he only started 3 games). I feel bad for Kobe.
VegasBlues - January 22, 2012
lakers have the 10th best record
in the Western Conference.

Xeifrank - January 22, 2012
OKC too low!!!
kinbote - January 22, 2012
They will likely creep up when their schedule gets tougher.
Xeifrank - January 22, 2012
Or they will start to lose more games as the Lakers have done since the opponents got tougher.
Phil Gurnee - January 22, 2012
I want the Sixers to win the East this year…face Portland in the finals
Josie Becker - January 22, 2012
average margin of victory seems pointless
Phil Gurnee - January 22, 2012
For example the Clips were winning by 20, pulled everyone and let their second team play the Raptors second team and who cares how the reserves do against each other in the fourth quarter of a blow out game? This happens with every blow out game.
Phil Gurnee - January 22, 2012
Then we can have things like early BCS days when the SEC teams would be faking field goals against Troy St. up by 70 in the fourth quarter.
Nolij - January 22, 2012
it’s not pointless. Not the highest weighted thing but definitely NOT pointless. Do better teams win by more points on average? Are better teams favored to win by more points than bad teams? Yes, Yes.
Xeifrank - January 22, 2012
Eh, I’d think the travel schedule is more important these days.
Phil Gurnee - January 22, 2012
Celtics are reminding me of how bad the Red Sox got out of the gate last year. 6-9 is amazing.
Phil Gurnee - January 22, 2012
Good chance they lose their next 3 games too.
VegasBlues - January 22, 2012
As long as they finish over .350, JoeyJoe thinks they might be ok.
