We break into your normal programming to bring you this breaking news:
Hard working TrueBlueLA and SBNation Los Angeles Editor Eric Stephen is going to Arizona this spring and he could use new clothes to rep TrueBlueLa in style.
We are over 5,000 members strong and before you spend that tax rebate money on clothes for your kids, food for your family, or food banks, we need you to consider spending some money on yourself. And by yourself I mean Eric. It has been a dry winter, but you all remember how Eric does the pregame show, in - game moderation, post game shows. How he leaves his home every weekend to cover the Dodgers and get the best quotes and in house information. You all remember that, but this year we need to get him to Camelback to cover the team like it has never been covered before.
This is not your normal telethon, we have some of the greatest TBLA characters on the phones right now to take your donations.
So call 1-888-TRUEBLA and make a donation after talking to the commentator of your choice:
The Midnight to Eight AM Shift has some of our best talent:
Gary - as Gary has humbly told us he can tell if someone is a prospect or not simply by watching how they wash their hands. He'll be heading to Camelback himself this spring, ask him which prospect you want him to keep an eye on in the restroom and for the right price, he'll report back to you personally. He has other talents, if you want Gary to put a fastball into someones earhole he's also the man for that. Also can help in the marketing world. Don't ask him about him doing dishes after a layover.
BHSportsGuy - you need a recipe, he's your man. Be prepared have your tomato paste on hand.
Hollywood Joe - the most interesting man on TrueBlueLA can give you an adventure no matter the subject. Surfing, Woman, Food, Wine, Outsourcing. He's your man
Humma - You want him to make fun of himself or give you a clever limerick? He's multi faceted and and will deliver the goods while drinking gin in one hand and handling/manipulating the speaker phone with the other hand. And by speaker phone I don't mean speaker phone.
NoLander - has an opinion about everything, even sports he does not like or pay attention too. He can help with any gadget questions provided it was not created by Apple.
Silverwidow - you want an overhyped prospect in any sport that will become yesterdays news before yesterday comes. He's your man.
Michael White - will answer any Clipper or basketball question, or for the whack jobs, he will answer questions about the WAC
Brandon - you'd think he'd answer any prospect questions but he asked if we could set it up so he does not have to answer any questions. After ranking 200 players he is soooooooo tired of Dodger prospects, so instead ask about exciting audit stuff, you know the stuff gives auditors the woody's they are world renowned for.

This all day telethon continues from 8:00 AM - Noon with our next group. Remember all these folk are giving their time freely to raise money for Eric's Camel Back run. Don't let them down.
Tommy Blackjack - I have no idea why he is on the phones, the only thing I know about Tommy is that he works in Pet Insurance and hates Dr. Pepper. Who would ask him anything?
USCChris - Let Chris give you three thoughts, one will be outrageous, one will be an apology, and he will end with more outrageous thought to top the first one. We call that the Triple Sundae
Delias Man - you need someone to hate, he can hate for you. That is worth it's weight in gold
Xeifrank - our gambling expert is your gambling expert today, no matter the game, he's got a simulation for it. Just be aware that he's taking a 20% cut of anything donated to Eric that he answered the call on.
12:00PM - 16:00 - we go with the classier members
Court##### - maybe he can tell you why he's a PHD candidate and has such a lame moniker. You have a question about music, he should be able to answer it, if not let's dial it up a notch and have him transfer you to,...........
Berkowitz - crusty dude who looks exactly like a music professor should look. Eventually Court### will morph into him.
Josie - another scholar who can take your movie, music, team uniforms, cultural questions or any number of subjects. Just don't ask her about soccer, she doesn't even know when the National team plays Italy. If you have a soccer question I suggest you wake up earlier and ask USCChris.
Maddz - you want to talk Theology at the highest level, she is your girl. I'm not sure if there is anything Maddz does not know some answer too, yet I'm sure if she does not know the answer the bulldog will find it for you. At some point I think she has applied to every college in America and now beyond so maybe you have a college question.
Mintxcore - you want to know how to be a snob, he's the man who can answer that question
As the work day winds down you need some optimistic help. Our 16:00 - 18:00 trio will do the trick for you:
Underdog - can either tell you why to be optimistic no matter how this shithole season is shaping up, or he can simply match anyone on the Internet for movie reviews and trivia.
IVdown (Bobby) - you need a TV package, he's worked for all of them and can give you the rundown on the best one. You want some optimism, he can give you that. You want some puppy slobber he can give you that,
Keith13 - he lives in Arkansas and still loves life, who better to make you feel better about your shitty life. I'll tell you one thing, the only way to really feel better about yourself is to make the call to 1-888-TrueBLA and donate some of your hard earned money.
18:00 - 20:00
Tired of the high brow or optimistic poo pa, and want some low brow entertainment? We have the group for you.
Meercatjon - crusty ole rodent who will give you unwanted advice for keeping varmints out of your holes and other non-useful things
David Young - he may be a rocket scientist but at his heart he's a Chatsworth kid who knows the industry in and outs better then anyone.
ElCamino - making a rare appearance, this ole bugger has the info on the right beer no matter the circumstance
Joey Joe - ask him why he visits us, we all want to know
Kelley Stephen - Doesn't Stephen Kelley sound better? He will probably just let the phone ring
Mleadman - derelict misanthrope who can answer any question about where to eat. I may have used misanthrope wrong but it was going to be used at some point today and this is where it was randomly inserted. Deal with it. Call Marty
Regfairfeld - You like someone, ask Reg and he'll let you know how much he sucks and why.
20:00 - 11:59Pm
Taking it home group, our goody two shoes members
Robotmaidofnails - can answer any baseball umpire question
That is it, we don't have many "nice" members.
Grimjack, fbihop , VeroJoe, Kinbote, Nolij, Julio, OB12, Pure Azure, NotJoeTorre, Shaqfor3, SeanMillerSavior, Tripon, UCLA32, LittleBlueBicycle, hee came hee seop'd he choi'd, VegasBlues, Taylor, Tim Crews' Dastardly Mustache, and Chad had better things to do but have promised to help out during the next telethon.
Get off your duffs, make the call, get Eric to Camelback in style.
And thanks for reading because without you there would still be a TrueBlueLA, just a lot less irritating.

How to really make a donation once you realize 1-888-Truebla is not a real number

In all seriousness we only do this one time per year. Eric works hard for you, no one has to feel obligated to donate, but if you have extra money, and you read this site on a regular basis, it would be greatly appreciated if you did make a donation. I know when we did this last year, Eric collected enough to handle most of the Camelback expenses. It would be great if that could happen again.
We have 5,000 members, I expect only about 1% to make the effort but even that 1% would be a difference maker.
Thanks for reading, and good luck with your Dodgers in 2012.
meercatjohn - January 23, 2012
We are the 1%
It won’t happen until a week and a half from now, but I will definitely be sending something the way of that paypal next paycheck. Without TBLA, the amazing writers and amazing people who comment I don’t know what I would do to get myself through the work day, because I sure as hell know it wouldn’t be work, though damned if I couldn’t answer all your phone, internet, and tv questions if you had em ;)

Man that is a terrible picture. That’s on me though :)
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
Could be on the uncredited photographer. He knows who he is.
Do note however how the banner above your head is well-framed.
I hope everyone knows that is a Giants press pass that you are wearing.
David Young - January 24, 2012
I thought it might have been photoshopped.
berkowit28 - January 24, 2012
Nope
I snapped that. It is in the Scottsdale stadium where the Giants have their spring training games. Paddy O’Furniture is a real business.
I don’t know why I didn’t take Eric’s pic at the banner that advertised that there were the place for day drinking.
David Young - January 24, 2012
Gotta hand it to the Giants for having two funny ads at their spring stadium. :)
Oh yeah, Rubby pitched four hitless innings that day.
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
Dos Gringos!
G.Scott - January 24, 2012
Right!
Guess I would have needed to get Eric and Phil to be pictured under that banner.
David Young - January 24, 2012
No
Calls yet.
I am sure there are nights and mornings and games where Eric thought he could just slack off a little but he doesn’t do that. I can tell you the man works hard for this site, give a little back.

If TBLA is 5000 strong let’s all send in $5000 apiece and we can have Fielder for a year! I’ve had a change of heart…We can all send in $5005 apiece and Eric can have $25,000 bucks too.

You cried watching Dolphin Tale, your street cred has been busted by a tail-less mammal who would have been chum in the normal state of the world. Just remember since human folk intervened and saved that Dolphin, God had to kill another one to take it’s place. One that was supposed to have baby Dolphins later in the year. One of those babies would have been a mutant, thus becoming the beginning of the new race of Dolphins that would later have saved humankind from itself, but no we had to intervene and thus by saving one tail-less Dolphin we cemented the fate of the human race.

I’m just using the Repko comp. What is the difference (honest question)
Michael White - January 24, 2012
Sufficient baseball ability
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
The clause in the CBA
This is from the old CBA, but I doubt it is much different if at all in the new CBA:
No way in hell Loney wouldn’t get paid his full salary in such a case. Easy win if the Dodgers tried anything.
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
Holy shit, so you were serious about the sufficient skill part.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
amazing, I thought he was being total snark
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Ya, I thought it was a LOLRepko comment.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
That is only if the
contract was awarded in arbitration, Loney and Ethier signed agreements before submitting figures, I think those contracts are guaranteed.
bhsportsguy - January 24, 2012
Repko didn’t go to arbitration either
Michael White - January 24, 2012
But then that would mean that every
contract to a arbitration eligible player is not guaranteed.
bhsportsguy - January 24, 2012
I was operating under the assumption that they weren’t, at least not during spring training.
Clearly, I was wrong.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
They aren’t automatically guaranteed.
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
It really depends on the language in the contract whether or not it is guaranteed.

New Auction Keeper League - 1 spot left
I’m setting up a new auction keeper league. No entry fee. I have several very experienced, savvy owners and we need to fill one spot. We draft ASAP. I need a committed owner as this will take the next two months to complete.
12 team, $260, slow auction. Keeper by adding $5.
5×5, but we’re debating over the format right now.

So I’m thinking this is just the first shoe. Occam’s razor clearly would say that Prince is at 1B, Miggy to DH, but I think there’s gotta be more. Either Detroit is entertaining the notion of moving Cabrera back to third (or LF?) or would be willing to move him.
Nolij - January 24, 2012
I’m thinking they simply do a timeshare with both seeing 1st base / DH.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Dear Mr. Prince
Come hear our Timeshare presentation and we’ll give you $214,000,000
mleadman - January 24, 2012

What if Loney pulls a Beltre this year? That would be great….
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
What do you mean what if?
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
idk, my memory isnt the greatest but I seem to remember fans frustrated with Beltre, maybe even wanting him gone… Looking at his stats his OPS was in the low 700s for 3 years up until 2004…. Maybe Loney does something similar, and out of nowhere has a monster 2012 to the surprise of many.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
Not the HR part though, or even RBIs, but still, maybe an OPS over 850… or whatever is a good OPS+

I find it amazing that when the Dodgers were last for sale the economy was kick ass, everyone had money, yet no one would pony up for the team, and now the team is valued 3 times as much, the economy blows chunks in a city that is blowing chunks and everyone with a billion dollar pulse is in the game. rolls eyes
not none but a relatively small portion of the LA population as compared to the portion of Philadelphia that watches. In just household numbers it’s still meaningful. I mean just look at all the money Taiwan is pouring into the Dodgers.
But really this has more to do with the nature of TV watching 10 years ago as opposed to now. The DVR has made sports so much more valuable.
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
My television watching came be summed up in two categories.
Live sports (75% of what I watch)
Shows I’ve DVR’d (25% of what I watch)
As such, the only commercials I see are for Aladdin bail bonds and the like.

Josie Becker - January 24, 2012

The Lakers have the most households

kinbote - January 24, 2012
It’s not only about ratings, it’s about being able to force cable and satellite companies to carry your channel and pay you x cents per viewer, whether or not any individual game gets ratings or not. Enough people want the sports channels to make that happen, irrespective of how many games they watch or don’t watch.
David Young - January 24, 2012

Seven years ago the world was much different
and the economy is bad, but not for the rich, which has future gate implications, but not pocket wealth implications
Hollywood Joe - January 24, 2012
Could be that many people with money know which way the wind is blowing (economy on the rise now).
But xurely the real answer is that 7 years ago a new owner was tied into an existing Fox TV rights contract (and KCAL too) that didn’t pay much for another 9 years; while now known riches are assured. The combination of Time Warner, own channel (like Lakers) and Fox all competing in he wake of the Angels’ contract, means it’s a really good investment now.
berkowit28 - January 24, 2012
I doubt at 1.5 Billion it is a good investment. The winner of this contest will not be making any money on the Dodgers.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012

OB12 - January 24, 2012

today: potential to buy the team for $1.5bil, and have a $3bil contract signed within two years.
G.Scott - January 24, 2012
The $1.5 billion does seem ridiculous. Feels like the housing market before the bubble burst.
My first thought was if that is the minimum is that in 10 years the Dodgers will sell at a loss. But WTF do I know?
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Thank you
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
The only thing I can think of
Time Warner or more likely Fox is paying 25 -33% in exchange for ownership into an RSN.
bhsportsguy - January 24, 2012
Then again, if they can break even or make a profit under the current model and TV deal, adding $80-100 million per year in pure profit (new TV deal) offsets that
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Can they be profitable as a day to day/year to year business
Sure, that part will not be hard.
The only way they make money in the end will be selling the whole thing with the interest in the RSN.

David Young - January 24, 2012
Reading some Tigers’ blogs dated right before the deal. Some of the DH speculation included Damon, Matsui, Ibanez, & Pierre [!]. I guess they upgraded there.
I still don’t see it as a huge win for Detroit. They paid a lot and they were already probably favorites in the AL Central. Going forward, they have Cleveland and KC to deal with longer-term. I’m not sure if they are near Tex/LAA/AL East 3. They still need a starter (Oswalt would’ve been a good fit; Garza still could be) for that rotation.
Color me kinda unimpressed.
kinbote - January 24, 2012
They totally needed that bat. They had only Miggy. They were basically the Dodgers with Kemp / Kershaw if they had just lost Andre as the Tigers lost Victor.
Now they can give the young pitchers some rope. The rotation is still short but at least Miggy is not going to have Peralta in front of him and Delmon Young behind him.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
the pitching isn’t that good. They need another starter badly
NotJoeTorre - January 24, 2012
It should be good enough for the AL Central this year anyway. They aren’t beating anyone in the postseason even if they get Garza.

However, we forgot that there is a growing amount of Pirates fans in the city of Pacoima because certain people in Pacoima like the colors, and the P on the hat. Michael White - January 24, 2012
I’m not
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
oh, I assumed you meant Lakers wont make playoffs… which they might not cuz they suck,…. but Clippers are making the playoffs, its not even questionable.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
In a 66 game season everything is questionable based on health. Right now the West is very packed after the Thunder. Not sure how much will shake out, then the crazy schedule will take a toll. I’m expecting a crazy ass April
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
I have to say, you did get me sufficiently worried on Sunday. It was the perfect storm of the Lakers playing poorly and watching the Clippers win (then the Lakers losing again Sunday night).
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
You can’t lose at home to the Indiana’s of the world. I’m curious how the rest helps them. Bynum is just about do for an injury right after Laker fans have talked themselves into thinking he’s as good as Howard
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Its not so much the rest, but the needed practice IMO as Eric mentioned earlier…. You had a 2 week preseason? with 2 games, and then with all the games packed the 1st month of the season, Lakers really havent have any practice time, and practice is where you improve/learn I guess….. Also Indiana is doing well this season.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
But even with more days off the next few weeks or so, and finally some practice time, Im still not very confident Brown can get the offense playing alot better based off his HC history with Cleveland. But hopefully im wrong….. Just please tell me Kobe shooting 25-30 shots every fuckin game isnt the plan all season, PLEASE.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
practice? practice? we’re talkin’ ’bout PRACTICE???
David Young - January 24, 2012
I don’t know if you know this but the Pacers have the 3rd best record in the NBA based on win pct. They are a pretty well-rounded and solid team.
And yes, these Lakers are not a contender the way they’re playing.
BFDC - January 24, 2012
yes I know all of that, still need to beat them when you have a big lead and the three of the best 10 players on the court are yours.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
I don’t disagree that the Lakers should have won the game, but when you say the “Indiana’s of the world” it sounds like you think they are a terrible team.
BFDC - January 24, 2012
you are right, my fault, I should of said if they remain mostly healthy… But you are correct, anything can happen when key players get hurt and miss alot of games.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
Hate to say it
Dodgers : Lakers :: Angels : Clippers
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
I don’t really get this comp. Angels are in a different geographic niche, so that sets them apart from the other three clubs and has been more successful than the Dodgers in the recent past. I guess there’s a newer vs. older thing going on, but the Dodgers have been nowhere near as successful as the Lakers in any stretch.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
I thought it was his rooting interest
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Los Angeles sports hierarchy?
The city I live in now is not the city I grew up in. The Dodgers and Lakers were the stable franchises that owned the LA while the Angels and Clippers were searching for the identities. Now, the roles are reversed.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
early 90s Lakers? Early 2000 Dodgers? This has all happened before, and shall happen again.
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
I think the Clippers have turned the corner as a franchise.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
Did Donald Sterling die?
Hollywood Joe - January 24, 2012
HA!
The Clippers have never had players like Griffin and CP3, bonafide franchise cornerstones. I guess it could be argued that Elton Brand should’ve been a player that Sterling should’ve broken the bank to keep, but history has played out in Sterling’s favor.
As terrible as Sterling is as an owner, he would have to try really hard to mess up what he has now.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
Can’t blame Brand walking on Sterling. At all.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
I don't
but Brand hasn’t lived up to his contract in Philly.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
all those lottery picks, law of averages says they couldn’t all be duds, not were they all duds. And they had a little help getting CP3
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
Most of them were duds
Yaroslev Korolev (#12), Shaun Livingston (#4), Chris Wilcox (#8), Melvin Ely (#12), Darius Miles (#3), Quentin Richardson (#18), Michael Olowakandi (#1), Brian Skinner (#22), Maurice Taylor (#14).
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
You have to count either Tyson Chandler or Brand if you’re going to do that though.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
i said most, not all
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
If I really wanted to nit-pick I’d point out that you included non-lottery picks in your list.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
I noticed that too!
I’m giving the Clippers credit. What’s with the third-degree? I thought you were a Clips fan.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
Just trying to keep it accurate. Heck, considering where he was drafted, I’d say Brian Skinner had a really nice career.
I hated the Chris Wilcox draft pick so much, and there’s nothing more to say about the Korolev pick. Ely was the same year as Wilcox, Miles just didn’t work out and Olowakandi was obviously a disaster.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
I used to love hearing Bill Walton commentate when Olowakandi was in the game. Walton really liked to bash him for some reason. I think he once called him the worst player in the history of western civilization.
BFDC - January 24, 2012

David Young - January 24, 2012

Manning missed a career

meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Shaun was the only guy on that list.
Michael White - January 24, 2012

Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
wow, Josie playing the “dog” card.
Xeifrank - January 24, 2012
How they have played this month is not relevant. What is relevant is that they have a true super star on the team for the first time this decade. Someone the old fans and new fans will combine to make them a respectable franchise in wins, fans, media contracts. You can look the other way but as you are doing so this franchise has turned the corner and things will never be the same.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Agreed
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
I didn’t mean to come off as trying to sink the Clipper, just that lets see how things play out. Coupled with that, the NBA is designed to continually churn teams up to the top.
Explain to me why the Clippers aren’t the new Cavaliers, is I guess what I’m saying.
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
yeah, one blown out knee, and its all over.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
What does “new Cavaliers” mean anyway?
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
From Lebron to Rags
nolander - January 24, 2012
Oh, then that is just a dumb comparison.
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
Superstar drafted and ultimately leaves without a championship. Team returns to sucking.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
CP3 is obviously the big counter argument, but is this going to be his last injury spell of the season?
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
I don’t even think this injury spell was all that legit. He’d definitely have played on it if the games were meaningful. VDN pulled a Torre and pressed his luck by sitting Paul during a soft strech of games. It probably worked too and the Clippers were a Love 3 pointer at the buzzer away from executing it to perfection.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
I get what Josie is saying I think…. As of right now, Clippers have made the right steps to turn the corner, but until they actually do turn that corner, you cant really say they have turned the corner yet. I think.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
and what would turning the corner be? just making playoffs? making playoffs consecutive seasons? winning a title? or ??
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
We have to define "corner"
When I said they turned the corner as a franchise, I did not mean they’ve suddenly elevated themselves to elite status. I meant they aren’t the same old clippers anymore.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
yeah, because when Dodgers added Dayrl and Eric Davis, was that turning the corner?? because they ended up crashing into a wall.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
The wall was right around the corner
mleadman - January 24, 2012
Anyone who’s worked in a restaurant knows you’re supposed to shout “Corner!” when coming around a wall.
Tim Crews' Dastardly Mustache - January 24, 2012
sure whatever – I don’t care, we can call the corner anything we want
I just have heard this before
Yes, they are better, they are good. For me turning the corner as a Franchise means you do it over time, over different mixes of player, you have a foundation and process that you use over and over again
I don’t see it – but mazeltov
Hollywood Joe - January 24, 2012
I agree Joe, and I think thats what Josie was trying to say…. you havent turned the corner, until you actually turn the corner.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
You haven’t turned a corner until you’ve turned a corner.
Got it.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
haha, got it? good, get it… im jk
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
trees are trees, no one has to make the argument they are trees
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
Let’s just say Google maps says the Clippers have many corners to turn. They’ve probably turned the first corner and are getting ready to turn their blinker on again. Of course little do they know they still have a bald tire and one of the headlights is out.
Xeifrank - January 24, 2012
I think your standards are to high.
For us turning the corner simply means we are no longer a laughing stock, we are legit, and we will continue to be legit for a few years. No one has the life span to say oh my goodness you have been consistently good now for five years I now proclaim you have turned the fucking corner. GTFOOH
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
IF Clippers can stay healthy, you just mentioned health earlier, dont forget it.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
/things you could say about every team in every sport
Michael White - January 24, 2012
yes ofcourse, but he just said earlier he isnt confident Clippers make playoffs this year because of health reasons, now he sounds sure Clippers are legit for a few years, without those same health reasons. But im sure that what he means.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
Says the man whose teams present and future reside in a 35 year old mans legs who has played so many minutes, and a center who is Chris Kaman fragile.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Kobe is 33
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
Playing in the NBA since age 18 with playoffs runs almost every year makes his legs older.
David Young - January 24, 2012
I don’t doubt the man’s odometer is up there. Just felt compelled to point that out. Phil was venturing into Germans/Pearl Harbor territory :)
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
I was talking about Derek Fisher but over shot by two years:)
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Oh, haha!
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
that kid has hung enough flags in his career
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
which has nothing to do with the future
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
maybe these are the end days of the Laker dynasty. Maybe the sheep will lie down with the cow.
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
They are at a crossroads, how they handle the transition from Kobe to the next superstar will be interesting. In the meantime they aren’t elite and will not be competing for any titles, which given the price of their tickets will not set well.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Key point
The Shaq to Kobe transition didn’t go well and needed a trade coup of Pau to get to the next level. The Kareem to Magic transition worked because Kareem was a smart man and Magic was an affable guy. We’ve had a lot of luck in Lakerland to garner the success we’ve had.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
Thing being Lakers have always shown the ability to bounce back…. Even when they go through down times, they always find a way to bounce back. Even in down times, Lakers have only missed the playoffs like 2-3 times, ever.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
oops, alot of repeat in there, my bad :(
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
When did this turn into about the Lakers:)
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
And this goes back to my original analogy
that confused MW…
As Lakers fans, we believe that even though we suck now, the team will bounce back because we always have, while the Clippers have historically been snake-bit by their own doing or forces beyond their control.
Right now personally speaking, I don’t know how the Lakers will bounce back. As much as I love Kobe (my second favorite athlete of all-time after Junior Griffey), I think his ego will be an impediment to the Lakers progress. The Lakers are cash-strapped with very few trade pieces, who happen to form the core of the team. The Lakers would have to go through a complete face-lift to get back to elite status, with only Kobe remaining since he’s unmovable with his age, contract, and value. This is what’s called uncertainty, something we as Lakers fans have been fortunate not to endure for long periods of time.
The Clippers, on the other hand, are running free and easy down the road. They have a core in place, finances that jive with each other, and YOUTH.
It’s not the end of the world for Lakers fans. We’ve been through rough spots before, but this is the first time in my lifetime that the LA teams find themselves on the other sides of the spectrum.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
Speaking of Griffey
His son Trey, a prized wide receiver recruit, just committed to U of Arizona.
I feel old.
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
He looks so much like a Junior that it’s as if Junior had sex with a female clone of himself and had Trey.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
Trey
per ESPN:
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
The Holy Grail if you grew up in the 90s
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
He really is Junior Junior.
David Young - January 24, 2012
All I did was correct errors in your draft pick post
Quit crying
Michael White - January 24, 2012
Could they amnesty Kobe?
David Young - January 24, 2012
and women over chairs.
David Young - January 24, 2012
but he did it like a cold-blooded assassin
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
Agree
I’m trying to keep the Clippers within the context of its own existence. It would be unfair to compare the Clippers to the Lakers or the Celtics.
I’m happy for Clippers fans who can now cheer for their team without waiting for the other shoe to drop.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
High probability
1. Contract stability for core of team.
2. High probability of making the playoffs next 3+ years.
3. ?
Xeifrank - January 24, 2012
CP3 is here for this season and next is a certainty. I’m no expert, but doesn’t the CBA allow the Clips to offer him more $ as a FA than any other team? That will put LAC in the driver’s seat for keeping him long term. Blake Griffin is a no-doubt max deal guy soon, right?
Sounds like the corner is turned barring serious, serious injury.
David Young - January 24, 2012
Yes and yes.
I do think the timing is perfect. With Chris Paul on the roster, the Clippers will be able to negotiate a max extension with BG. Assuming BG signs that (and he will), they’ll have Griffin locked up when it’s time to negotiate a new contract with Paul.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
and with that comes good players who will play to win at the end of their careers.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Yes, barring any strangeness we have or core for the next five years.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Indeed
The corner is turned, and the new street is well paved. Only problem is the future is so bright its hard to tell exactly where the road ends.
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
poetic
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
I don’t know where the end is but I do know the corner is in Oklahoma , game 7, Westbrook being picked by Paul with 28 seconds to go, dribbling around and around until with five seconds to go he finds DJ for the slamma jamma over Perkins leaving Westbrook crying on the court
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Thats the thing, people think a serious injury will happen or whatever because something bad always seems to find the Clippers. Maybe that wont happen this time, we shall see. But thats all the we’ll see what happens from Laker fans comes from… No need to get all crazy…. but I love the passion.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
Could be but those old Cavaliers had a hell of a run that most franchises would be more then happy to have. We are not competing against the Laker history, we are only competing against the NBA and by that standard the old Cav’s were almost awesome and certainly the fav of many a NBA fan for more then one year.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
sure, but I wouldn’t say the Cavs franchise turned a corner. I’d say they were a great attraction for a solid number of years.
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
Whatever
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
because Los Angeles is Los Angeles, and Cleveland is still Cleveland.
Drafting Blake Griffin was a no-brainer, but getting Chris Paul to agreeing to go to the Clippers was a bigger deal. Before this year, the Clippers were always in the discussion of drafting the next young star because they were card-carrying members of the NBA Lottery, but a bonafide superstar choosing to come to the the Clippers changes the landscape.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
the Clippers were CP3s first choice?
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
we are doing some fun Prince Fielder stuff down at the bottom
Hollywood Joe - January 24, 2012
ooo, neat!
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
It doesn’t matter if they were his 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th. The main point is that the Clippers weren’t his 31st.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
1 of 3 teams that he’d sign an extension with. That counts.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
Josie has not grasped this yet. Even before Paul came, Caron Butler said yes to us. Billups said yet so us. Paul was the icing on the cake but the corner had already been turned, getting Paul just accelerated the process.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
I think Butler loves the city of LA… did anyone good offer him more money?? Billups had to say yes, or retire.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
whatever
You all have been so irritating that I hope we kick the living shit out of you tomorrow night so I can post a “Eat the corner mother fuckers”
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
I think we should use our Mod powers to troll the shit out of people here.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
I think Lakers will lose going off the last 3 games, inculding preseason… Just dont make me eat any corner on Sepulveda please?
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
I said the same thing
and all I got was a Michael White audit.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
haha Thats funny.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
Thanks for making feel better though
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
The early 2000 Dodgers were good
Michael White - January 24, 2012
Early 90s Lakers went to the finals, then Magic got HIV, but they still only missed the playoffs once in the 90s.
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
that terrible, no good year : p
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
No HIV Magic along with Sedale Threatt, were knocking off the Bulls in 92 Finals haha
uschris0304 - January 24, 2012
Even the Yankees had a laughingstock period
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
This is a deep draft coming up!

negated this and that he would be refunding our donations.
mleadman - January 24, 2012
i was really hoping that was the case
delias man - January 24, 2012
Yeah, Eric is going to get slapped by the PR department.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Is there an actual goal number?
Ivdown - January 24, 2012
Yes
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Then being 38 percent short after only 12 hours isn't too bad
I’m glad it’s going well. I wish I could give some now, just has to wait till next paycheck. Damn I can’t wait till I can do my taxes for that return.
Ivdown - January 24, 2012
you should have kids if you want a real tax return
delias man - January 24, 2012
or just claim some
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
And keeping a kid for a pet is really cheap these days. PBS kids, a warm bottle and some ear plugs and you are good to go.

Hollywood Joe - January 24, 2012
the last two years i got screwed
and someone put me at 2 BOTH YEARS. This year I made sure to be at 0, so now when I do my taxes I should be much better off.
Ivdown - January 24, 2012
But to Marty’s point, that just means you’ll be getting a bigger refund (assuming it’s not an IOU) since you’re giving the government an interest free loan on your wages.
The smartest play is to end up owing the government at year end. Time value of money and all that shit.
Michael White - January 24, 2012
Yeah that’s what I’ve heard, but since i’m not the best with money, it’s probably better to get more at once so I can pay off bills and things like that instead of wasting it check to check on things I don’t need.
Ivdown - January 24, 2012
I’ve heard this for 30 years when I give financial advice. Learn discipline
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
Is there really a big difference from getting more on my checks during the year then getting a fairly big return?
Ivdown - January 24, 2012
If you take home an extra $200 per month and simply stash that $200 in a savings account earning 1.5%, at the end of the year you would have an extra $212, roughly.
Super quick and dirty example.
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
that is home economics math right there

Hollywood Joe - January 24, 2012

Hollywood Joe - January 24, 2012
In this day and age, your interest rate needs the decimal point shifted left one digit.
David Young - January 24, 2012
Yeah, I overshot.
$200/month at 0.75% (online money market account) will net roughly ~$103 at the end of the year.
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
Either way I simply have never understood why folk would rather the big G have their money instead of themselves but as Bobby pointed out they use the big G as their forced saving plan.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
as long as you save your money to pay your taxes
why not.
Mike is right though, not having much either way is the way to go.
bhsportsguy - January 24, 2012
I owed multiple thousands the last couple years
due to my wifes company being retarded. She finally got her W2 today so we’ll see what happens this year.
nolander - January 24, 2012
good luck on getting something back
I haven’t had a return for 3 years, the last two years i’ve been at nothing back but nothing owed then like 250 owed to the state and federal. I want a return for once! lol
Ivdown - January 24, 2012
Let’s just say I made a bid to a certain company for a certain local sports franchise and I need to hit $1.5 billion pretty soon or my check is going to bounce.
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012

Ruggiano DFA'd by Rays
That original deal was right around this time 6 years ago:
Edwin Jackson/Chuck Tiffany/Justin Ruggiano
for
Danys Baez/Lance Carter
Dodgers DFA’d Joel Hanrahan to make room for one of the new pitchers.
silverwidow - January 24, 2012
Good times.
Eric Stephen - January 24, 2012
For six years Ruggiano has bounced back and forth between the Rays and Minors. What a pinball.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
That’s what he gets for sounding like a $5 HJ wine.
kinbote - January 24, 2012
Wrong deal with the Rays
Ruggiano was dealt mid-season in ’06 in that other deal with TB: Ruggiano, Splash Navarro and Jae Seo for Lurch Hendrickson, Toby Hall, and some bucks.
David Young - January 24, 2012
Imagine if Dodgers had just kept Jackson and Hanrahan and not been fricking stupid.
Oh well, don’t imagine that. Never mind.
underdog - January 24, 2012

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare sieze the fire?
And what shoulder, & what art.
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?
What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?
When the stars threw down their spears,
And watered heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?
Tyger! Tyger! burning bright

Now that we know the terms of the Prince deal
Do people think the Dodgers could’ve realistically paid this much for him had they not given out all the little onesie and twosie contracts this offseaon? Sure, the offseason wasn’t that great (sans the Kemp deal) but this should make moot the "we could’ve signed Fielder with the money we used on Capang and Juan Kennedy.
Xeifrank - January 24, 2012

Hollywood Joe - January 24, 2012
I think the narrative isn’t “NED!” it’s “aw man, why we all poor and whatever” but it comes out as “NED!” Like Ned could clip coupons and save up enough to finally get a third big bat

Humma Kavula - January 24, 2012
Well when all the talk was of a 6 year deal it made sense
9 years is stupid and insane.
nolander - January 24, 2012
The last three years are not relevant.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
of course they are
Prince is not Pujols, and they basically gave him a Pujols contract.
nolander - January 24, 2012
Pujols is older than Prince
the last three years of the Prince contract he’s gonna be 34 – 36 years of age
last three years of Pujols he’s gonna be in his 40’s
Pujols is worth more for the next 5 years…after that I’d rather have Prince
BaldBilly - January 24, 2012
P.S.
I wouldn’t want the Dodgers to own either of those contracts no matter how much money the new owners have
BaldBilly - January 24, 2012
+1
Xeifrank - January 24, 2012
Except Prince is fat
and fat players get worse quicker. And Prince is not as good as Pujols outside of last year.

He's not fat
he just has jiggly muscles
BaldBilly - January 24, 2012
If his father is any comparable

Humma Kavula - January 24, 2012
Reply fail. Meant to follow up on the delias-nolander accord above.
Humma Kavula - January 24, 2012
because the teams involved where all being cautious about it
then Victor Martinez got injured a week ago and the tigers panicked
nolander - January 24, 2012

meercatjohn - January 24, 2012

court168627 - January 24, 2012 via Android app
Market was at 7 years until Victor Martinez got hurt and Tigers got desperate. /Not My Argument
Xeifrank - January 24, 2012
But if someone bid 9 years, there is a good chance someone else bid 8, no?
Xeifrank - January 24, 2012
tigers come in at 8
someone else matches, boras says if you want him to come to that shithole of a city you gotta give us 9
nolander - January 24, 2012
(come in at 8 knowing 7 is what was already on the table from other teams)
nolander - January 24, 2012
exactly. Boras played them. bottom line
please realize this everyone.
delias man - January 24, 2012
I’m not sure Boras “played” anybody. I’m also uncomfortable with the idea that Boras got lucky or whatever. This always happens with Boras: his client signs for way more money and more years than anybody thought possible.
With Fielder, Boras did what Boras does: get the best possible deal for his client.
Humma Kavula - January 24, 2012
lucky? no
he played the situation well. What I am surprised by is that they gave him Pujols money.
nolander - January 24, 2012
I expected him to be filthy richish
but not this filthy rich. I expected CJ and Reyes to get tons of cash when others doubted, but the market seemed to be set on prince.
nolander - January 24, 2012
so you were wrong, deal with it instead of simply saying Boras was bailed out by Victor Martinez.
meercatjohn - January 24, 2012
bailed out how?
he was probably getting 7 years either way, I don’t think he needed bailing out. Again I ask, if 9 was on the table before the Victor injury… why didn’t they sign a week+ ago?
nolander - January 24, 2012
i'm just surprised detroit can operate as a big market team

Hey Josie
I watched the ManU-Arsenal game this past Sunday. Even though the final score was 2-1, it never seemed like the Gunners had a chance. Even when they scored the equalizer, I felt it was only a matter of time before ManU went back up.
ishXdavid - January 24, 2012
absolutely, which is probably the best thing about soccer. Scoring happens infrequently, but the game has a sense about it. You knew when Utd got that first goal, they had it. Arsenal scoring only increased the awesomeness of the winner. Felt good to cheer for a goal again (Man Utd fan) after holding my tongue in the press box for so long.
Josie Becker - January 24, 2012
That Arsenal goal was very pretty, though.
fbihop - January 24, 2012
All right, this is a thread too late, buuuut...
I decided that each of the bidders were pretty friendly competitors for the most part. Kind of like a sports team, right? So I decided to give each known bidder for the Dodgers a place to play and a nickname. Get ready…
Garvey/Hersh: Los Angeles Lotharios
Stadium: Old Dodger Stadium, a stadium saved in the nick of time from destruction by the Brooklyn team, but moved to Coachella to save the boss a drive. The name Los Angeles is still permitted not because of Arte Moreno’s antics, but because L.A. itself was renamed by another team; see below.
This team loves to catch you with your pants down. Don’t make any mistakes against them or you might find yourself in hot water when the season winds down in nine months. They are really dangerous when they’re holding the big stick, and also on the mound where they pound the strike zone hard.
Steven Cohen: Connecticut Cheaters (formerly the South Manhattan Swindlers)
Stadium: New Enron Field, a palatial stadium built on the backs of the shrinking middle class.
This team has pockets so deep that you’ll never find the bottom. Just watch out for what you will find! This team seems to commit many infractions of the game code, not only related to on the field issues, but off the field as well. Apparently the team’s owner thinks that the rules of insider trading are “vague”, and so too are the rules involving adultery equally murky. Watch your backs in their stadium; they’ll do anything to win. They lead the league in stolen bases on the bidding field.
O’Malley: New Brooklyn Septuagenarians
Stadium: New Dodger Stadium, also known as the Los Angeles Coliseum, bought with money earned from the parting out and destruction of Dodger Stadium. Of course, it was renovated first, by which I mean it was painted with blue trim. Oh, and the team’s boss staged a coup, establishing himself as dictator of L.A. county and renaming Los Angeles to New Brooklyn.
This team is very old, but reminds fans of a history of greatness. Unfortunately, they’ve just lost a few steps and lack a serious competitive drive anymore. Additionally, their reputation was tarnished by a series of events best not recounted here (or anywhere).
Magic/Kasten: Inglewood Immortals
Stadium: The New Forum: a life-size replica of the Roman Coliseum painted purple and gold.
This team has a lineup that is feared. Why the Immortals, you ask? Well, the man who is the muscle behind this operation is impossible to keep down. Just ask Ron Westhead. Or the Laker fans who booed him after he had Westhead fired. HIV couldn’t even keep him out of the NBA altogether. And you think you can beat him on his bidding court?
Torre/Caruso: Bronx Elbow Surgery
Stadium: Armstrong Field, an indoor stadium inside of an over-the-top Los Angeles mall with turn-of-the-century charm.
Yes, the newspapers gave this team an ugly name, but man can they hit. The only problem with this team is that all of the players are overrated. Their manager is horrible but everyone seems to think he is the reason for their success, and their venue is oh-so-pretty but also oh-so-overrated. Watch out when you’re playing them; they know how to use their friends in high places to get ahead on the bidding field.
