According to Bill Shaikin, Frank McCourt has eliminated several prospective owners including Dennis Gilbert and Mark Cuban.
Mark Cuban was eliminated from the Dodgers' ownership sweepstakes Friday, along with baseball executive and former agent Dennis Gilbert, according to two people familiar with the process but not authorized to discuss it.
The remaining bidders will now be vetted by MLB. Interestingly enough McCourt just saved GIlbert, Cuban, and whoever else did not make the final cut, $25,000 since they no longer need to pay MLB the investigation cost of a bid.
No word on if the darkest horse Josh Macciello is still in the running.
Not a surprise that Cuban is out given that Frank expects to sell the team for 1.5 Billion. Cuban may be flamboyant but at heart he's a self made businessman who knows value and it is doubtful the Dodgers at 1.5 Billion is value. As Cuban said back in November
"I don't think the Dodgers franchise is worth twice what the Rangers are worth," Cuban told The Times in November.
With the sale price supposed to reach at least 1.5 Billion that would make the Dodgers worth almost three times the value of Rangers who sold for $593 million.

At least we haven’t lost two straight World Series. Suck it, Rangers!
kinbote - January 28, 2012
LOL if they were cool like us they would have pulled off losing two straight NLCS

Only way I can see the Dodgers being worth 3 times as much is if they bring in a NFL team and stadium to the parking lots at Dodger stadium.

Kroenke
Magic/Guggenheim
Caruso/Torre
Cohen
O’Malley
Gold/Disney
My preference is still Magic unless O’Malley’s group is loaded as well.
silverwidow - January 28, 2012
Hopefully we get someone who wants to win
and not just make money.
Apparently, Garvey’s group has been eliminated as well.
Supposedly, 10 bidders remain but they might merge or party up to some extent.
Kroenke is a big sports guy and probably one of the richest; perhaps he would be a good owner.
florida dodger - January 28, 2012
Kroenke would be great. Then he can bring the Rams back to LA
Rosemary Campbell White - February 2, 2012
Will our entire infield hit 25 HR’s this year?
Basing this on Ellis, Loney, Ellis, Uribe, and Gordon getting most of the starts.
I say no.
keithc13 - January 28, 2012
I guess I’m wording it, Those 5 wont hit 25.
keithc13 - January 28, 2012
I would take the over. Even with Loney 15, Uribe 10, we’re there.
kinbote - January 28, 2012
I know. I guess I didn’t think it through. I really think they hit about 33
keithc13 - January 28, 2012
You’re still coming down from the duck high.
kinbote - January 28, 2012
Man that cabbage and black eyed peas side was incredible.
keithc13 - January 28, 2012
Loney will hit 23
Ellis 3
Gordon 1
Uribe 4
DeJesus 2
Mitchell 3
Fields 19
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
DeJesus’ AAA bombs don’t count Phil
keithc13 - January 28, 2012
Gordon’s an ITPHR or wall-scraper?

iiidown - January 28, 2012

Taylor Maricle - January 28, 2012
I can’t believe how many home runs Dee Gordon is going hits in 2012 is a source of argument.
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
It's not really, for me
I don’t care to try and predict something that’s a function of luck more than skill.
I was just pointing out that he’s not as completely powerless as people make him out to be.
Taylor Maricle - January 28, 2012
oh he is. he really really is.
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
Well, yeah, he's pretty powerless
But he can still get it over the fence on occasion.
Taylor Maricle - January 28, 2012
Gordon had the one ball he turned on in Minnesota (the game when all the Dodgers hit) that was really the only one I can remember him hitting that had any shot to go over a fence in certain conditions.
My actual expectations for Gordon’s home run total in 2012 is zero.
Eric Stephen - January 28, 2012
he had that one in DS
That hit halfway up the wall for an easy triple

Man that sucks
keithc13 - January 28, 2012
AJE 6
Loney 16
M.Ellis 11
Uribe 14
Gordon 18 (all inside the park homers)
Eric Stephen - January 28, 2012
Lol
keithc13 - January 28, 2012
Are we moving the stadium to the moon? The Ellises’ totals look optimistic.
kinbote - January 28, 2012
If A.J. slumps, I’ll just write something about him so he’ll get motivated again. :)
Eric Stephen - January 28, 2012
AJ will not slump. His average will remain between .260 and .280 all year long. He is the glue to our infield. He’s not flashy like Mark but he’ll get the job done.
kinbote - January 28, 2012
AJ Ellis 30
James Loney 30
Mark Ellis 30
Dee Gordon 29
Juan Uribe 30
Suck it, Baker/Smith/Cey/Garvey

We were talking about HR’s, not singles.
lol

So just a few blocks away from where I live and work, a cement truck turned over Friday morning and in doing so knocked over a traffic light. It is the busiest street in the high desert, and that light was usually a brief stop for the passing traffic. Now, it’s a 3-way stop and has wreaked havoc for two days and counting with traffic.

kinbote - January 28, 2012
Cardinals just replaced him for $5 Million. Cards may not have Pujols but
Returning Wainwright, replace Jackson with Oswalt, sign Beltran, Furcal
If Beltran can play CF again, they move Jay to RF in a platoon with Craig, or use Craig against LHP at 1st base. All said they have done as well as they could have to make up the ground by losing Pujols.
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
I never wanted Oswalt because of the back and contract but as a one year free agent for $ 5 Million how come 30 teams were not in on that?
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
Because he wanted to play for the Cardinals and not the 30 other teams. He pursued them. The Cardinals weren’t even going to make an offer.
VegasBlues - January 28, 2012
theres something to this whole
players like st louis thing
nolander - January 28, 2012
Disappointed about Gilbert
I guess I’ll just have to buy into the Magic hype.
Taylor Maricle - January 28, 2012
What do you all think of Stan Kroenke winning, building a football stadium in the parking lot like Peter wanted to do and bring the Rams back with him? Thumbs up from me.
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
Scuttlebutt says he won’t make any commitments to staying in St. Louis long-term (not that that has ever stopped anyone) as opposed to L.A. I think “Farmer’s Field” is still a more appealing option than Chavez Ravine for a football team, but it’s possible.
Nolij - January 28, 2012
we’re spoiled a little, but how would people feel about a multipurpose facility?
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
It’s the only way I’d see the Chavez Ravine site working for a football team. I’d hate it as a Dodger fan though and seeing as how my football allegiances have nothing to do with LA that’s all that matters to me.
VegasBlues - January 28, 2012
Unacceptable.

The only way it could work is if it were like Yankee Stadium when it hosted the Giants. No seats added, no view changed. Which won’t happen.
Josie Becker - January 28, 2012
Fuck them all
Eric Stephen - January 28, 2012
Yes
I was only discussing parking lot football field and Chavez Ravine
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
I had the question about multi-purpose facilities.
Do you think there is a possible way to build the stadiums that would work for both teams?
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
I’d think a brilliant architect could make it happen but the ones that have been built so far did not work for baseball.
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
i’ve never been so I don’t know, but how does Oakland work for Football?
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
don’t know personally
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
It's not ideal
Josie Becker - January 28, 2012
would imagine the people sitting closest to the field have roughly the worst seats
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
yup
touchdowns are scored such that the action is physically behind you
Josie Becker - January 28, 2012
don’t go too hard into the back of the endzone on that fade route or you’ll find yourself in the first row
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
I would bet that a stadium that could be slightly reconfigured would work well
IE: Extend left field wall, bring in right field wall for football season.
Taylor Maricle - January 28, 2012
that was the original plan with Shea Stadium, but it was abandoned when the Jets moved out
Josie Becker - January 28, 2012
It can't be that difficult for a great architecture firm.
During my Landscape Architecture class i saw a lot of really cool stuff.
Taylor Maricle - January 28, 2012
Just based on the Anaheim experience they have to take into account the seating for a full pleasurable experience for both fans. Going to Anaheim now and sitting beyond 1st or 3rd is a neck cranking exercise of extreme annoyance, yet I imagine those seats were great for football. Facing straight a head does not work in baseball if all you get to do is face the left or right fielder.
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
this is really cool
and I know I say that a lot. How Shea Stadium converted for football and baseball. From popular science, 1964

Josie Becker - January 28, 2012
Page 2
Josie Becker - January 28, 2012
I dig it
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
the Jets stayed until ’84, so it must not have been too bad for football
Josie Becker - January 28, 2012
even then, no one went to Mets games.
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
Not so.
berkowit28 - January 28, 2012
come on man, it was a picture of an empty stadium. Next time I’ll put a THIS IS A JOKE disclaimer up.
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
Oh. Fair enough. The comment was far enough away from the picture, I didn’t even realize you were commenting on the picture. I was just thinking it referred to the early years of Shea and the Amazing Mets, which were pretty popular.
berkowit28 - January 28, 2012
i was born in 86 so I didn’t really get to see Doc Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, but I wish I had. Would Ron Darling have also been on those teams?
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
Someone will reply. Although I was around then, I wasn’t a baseball fan. I just know (and remember from the time – this much I was aware of) that the earliest Mets teams were ridiculously terrible – horrible, awful – and were still very popular with New Yorkers. They were fun, their awfulness was fun. Then, all of a sudden, in 1969, just 7 years in, they won a WS, and became even more popular, a rousing success.
berkowit28 - January 28, 2012
yes
Hollywood Joe - January 28, 2012
I would imagine that chairs that are controllable direction wise would not be too expensive. Have each seat connected to a bar that could rotate them (in between games, etc, not with people in the seats), think like a locomotive’s wheels with the bar that moves them. I’m talking about rotating each seat on the spot, not moving it forward or backward as a part of the whole row.
The cost of the modifications would be less than the cost of a second stadium. Of course what Josie just posted works much better.
Taylor Maricle - January 28, 2012
direction is easy-ish, but what do you do with the seats that sit front row for baseball but are just staring at the backs of personnel for football? if you don’t sell those seats, then the front row is too far removed from the action
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
You could always just have the seats higher up starting in the first row.
Taylor Maricle - January 28, 2012
but that’s not suitable for baseball
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
multipurpose facilities are almost universally owned by the city/county and not by one of the teams
Josie Becker - January 28, 2012
And most of them built in the 70’s have been torn down!

Yeah, but i throw like 65
So, it’s a trade-off, i suppose.
Taylor Maricle - January 28, 2012
the jump from 65 to 80 is nothing but a tweak away. everything after that will be repetition and strength, and least right away
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
How can you make a 15 MPH jump with just a tweak?

Ivdown - January 28, 2012
called it
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
if you could give a 15 MPH jump…..dangerous
Hollywood Joe - January 28, 2012
65-80 is WAY different than 80-95, but getting a grown man with a little pitching ability from 65-80 isn’t that difficult. i think 80 is the hardest a non-pitcher can expect to get to without baseball training/experience

Josh Macciello might have made the cut ...
according to Chad, Josh has been tweeting hints that he made it to round 2.
Venergy - January 28, 2012
Magic group would be my #1 preference. but Macciello would be my #2 … cuz he’s got a little crazy in him.
Venergy - January 28, 2012
Cuban should join Macchiello’s group :)
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
I have to say, he would probably be a terrible owner, but there’s a small part of me rooting for Macciello.
court168627 - January 28, 2012
Ditto, Eric is missing his chance to be a GM by not giving this guy any ink. I suspect he holds grudges.
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
apparently he’s already corresponded with Roberto from Vince Scully is My Homeboy

You will meet him a the tournament, he will be playing for LFP.

Went to DS this morning to pick out mini plan tix. Love being there any time of year, but hated seeing field covered with dirt from supercross. They have not changed or removed any displays from last season. Big pictures of Padilla and Kuo, even a Navarro reference.
JB 8 - January 28, 2012
they won’t take those down until the moment DePodesta walks into the stadium for his first day
Josie Becker - January 28, 2012
Burn in he…………………………….Ack (slumps over keyboard and dies)
Grimjack - January 28, 2012
i wonder if people think DePodesta/Beane would be effective with larger payrolls or if they’d geek out over Alfonso Soriano too
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
Three DHs is the last market inefficiency, so I don’t know how well that would translate to the NL.
kinbote - January 28, 2012
I’m scared of what a big picture of Padilla would look like.

There are Dodger fans and then there are Dodger fans.
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
Given the Dee Gordon conversation how many players since integration have hit more inside the park home runs then over the fence home runs, minimum 10?
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
probably get a bucnh of guys at like 1-0
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
why I said minimum of 10
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
12 of Willie Wilson’s first 15 homers were inside the park. The last 26 of his career went over the fence.
Juan Pierre has hit 16 homers in his career and all but one went over the fence.
The cutoff shouldn’t be integration, but rather deadball/liveball.
btimmer - January 28, 2012
Thanks Bob, makes sense that at the beginning of the burner careers they have more ISP home runs and that changes as the body changes if they stay in the game.
I like to use integration as the cutoff simply because I do.
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
Clyde Milan hit 17 career homers for Washington in the deadball era in a monstrous park. 14 of them are known to be IPHR.
btimmer - January 28, 2012
Another reason to use later years was reduction in size of ballparks.
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
career?
or in one season? i can’t imagine someone having 10 inside the parkers in on season.
court168627 - January 28, 2012
Of course
Phil Gurnee - January 28, 2012
Sam Crawford had 12 IPHR in the 1901 season for the Reds. 51 of his 97 homers were inside the park.

G how was the game today
I finally figured out what was happening with my swing today at the cage – itching to play!
Hollywood Joe - January 28, 2012
our game was postponed due to inability to find an available field. Thankfully.
I’m nowhere near ready to throw to hitters. I’m doing this weird thing with my slider where I frisbee it up instead of throwing it with an aggressive armslot so it’s practically like me standing there screaming HEY EVERYONE I’M GONNA THROW A LOOPY SLIDER PLEASE DON’T SWING
So I played basketball instead.
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
I like that slider that moves across the zone on one plane – that’s my favorite slider in the world
Hollywood Joe - January 28, 2012

Taylor Maricle - January 28, 2012

G.Scott - January 28, 2012
Garvey’s out. Wonder who the fourth down will be.
lnickerson88 - January 28, 2012 via mobile
Kinda glad he's out.
Never really liked the idea of him in charge. Wouldn’t mind seeing Orel at the top, though.
Taylor Maricle - January 28, 2012
Yeah, I was rooting for him pretty much because of Orel. Now I’m split between Magic and Kroenke. I didn’t really think Kroenke would be such a serious bidder, but apparently he is.
lnickerson88 - January 28, 2012
And really, the only reason I want Kroenke here is so he can bring the Rams with him.
lnickerson88 - January 28, 2012
I don't know about Kroenke
I know him and his wife have money up the wazoo, but I would like an owner who’s focused on only the Dodgers.
Tommy Blackjack - January 28, 2012
Isn’t that an uncomfortable place to store money?

Hollywood Joe - January 28, 2012
Papillon!
David Young - January 29, 2012
I wan’t the opposite
An owner focused only the team is going to be prone to micro-management and medling
I want someone who this is a feather in their cap, an ego stroke, a long term investment, and something that they let the little people who work for them worry about
if we get a Jerry Jones I will cry for Frank
Hollywood Joe - January 28, 2012
wan’t

Hollywood Joe - January 28, 2012
Kroenke will most likely move the Rams back to LA. Whether he owns the Dodgers or not will have nothing to do with that decision.
VegasBlues - January 28, 2012
There isn’t any evidence supporting this statement. I hope it’s true nonetheless.
lnickerson88 - January 28, 2012 via mobile
I cannot wait for an owner to be chosen, the celebration and outcry together will be awesome
I expect bedlam
Hollywood Joe - January 28, 2012
I expect a fat payroll……and eventually Joey Votto and Granick. I’m a daydream believer but don’t call me a homecoming queen or else we can “throw hands”
VeroJoe - January 28, 2012
I want a 2013 rotation of Kershaw, Hamels, Greinke, Cain, Billingsley. Fuck Philadelphia.
G.Scott - January 28, 2012
That would be nice
I’ll settle for:
Kershaw, Greinke, Billingsley, Rubby, Withrow/Eovaldi/Webster/Lee
Ivdown - January 28, 2012
I’m thinking the same thing IVdown…….and Gary I lived near Philly for a long time so I really hate the Phillies!
VeroJoe - January 28, 2012

The Sunday New York Times FTMFW
It is such a joy to read, it makes me miss the LAT that was
Hollywood Joe - January 29, 2012
Sunday mornings used to be a marathon of reading the LA Times. First: The Headlines and the front page, then the sports section -cover to cover, then the Calendar section. Now you can scan the entire paper (All thirty pages of it!) in about 10 minutes – Ads and all!
I wanted to be a Journalist once upon a time, and I loved the way the Times laid out their newspaper, but the Internet has killed newspapers, and I don’t think they’re long for this world.
