I don't really have anything substantive to say regarding the Dodgers right now, so I will begin 2012 with a question: Which player will lead the 2012 Dodgers in triples?
The Dodgers' yearly triple leaders for the past few years:
In the last 13 years, 14 different players have led or tied for the team lead in triples, with only three multiple leaders during that span.
I'll guess Dee Gordon to lead the Dodgers in triples in 2012. He only had two in 56 games in 2011 but with his speed he might bunt into one or two. What's your guess?

Castle will lead the Dodgers in three baggers.

That’s pretty hard to do when you’re playing in AAA.

I figured Silverwidow was breaking news that the Isotopes were changing their team name.

Dee Gordon

If the A’s do decide to trade Mr. Crisp, he gets a $250,000 one-time bonus.

why can’t loney just hit lots of doubles and triples and stop trying to hit it out of the park. OR, why can’t Loney learn to field/throw right handed and move to 3B, OR why can’t he learn to catch?

Since triples in DS are less about speed and more about getting the ball to bounce of something funny I’m going Mark Ellis.

NotJoeTorre - January 3, 2012
If he stays healthy
He’s worth it. To the A’s? Who knows. They really have no shot at the playoffs the next couple of years barring something strange happening. But he is probably between a 2.0 and 2.5 WAR player given 500+ PAs. This contract values him at around a 1.7 WAR player for this year and 1.3 the next.
Xeifrank - January 3, 2012

does it matter?
Hollywood Joe - January 3, 2012
James Loney
or make that Jim Loney will lead the Dodgers in triple plays next season. I was going to go with Uribe because most triple plays are started by a right hander pulling the ball to the third baseman but I think Loney gets way more plate appearances and hits into the most triple plays of any Dodger next year. I can’t believe someone actually picked Dee Gordon. I mean, come on! The dude is way too fast to hit in to that many triple plays.

I wouldn’t say I’d rather have Rivera, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Quentin’s offensive value was negated by his D, especially playing all those games in the NL West.
BFDC - January 3, 2012
This just rings of fail
Quentin is a possible 30 hr bat, Rivera will be lucky to hit 15-20, and he won’t even provide any other real value either. Not only that, Quentin has walked a lot more than Rivera ever has. Yeah, I’d definitely take Quentin over Rivera.
Ivdown - January 3, 2012
Juan will be lucky to hit 10 home runs.

Hollywood Joe - January 3, 2012

David Young - January 3, 2012
Considering he’s only hit 30+ in 2008 that’s not bold.
regfairfield - January 3, 2012
I’ll take an under at 25.5
David Young - January 3, 2012
It's one of those "if he's healthy" things
He’s always been on pace for more than 30 home runs, he just hasn’t played enough to do it since 2008.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/q/quentca01.shtml#2008-2011-sum:batting_standard
His per 162 game average for HR from 2008 till now is 37.
Ivdown - January 3, 2012
He is moving from a very favorable hitters park to Petco. And having to play OF in the vast pastures of the NL West (DS is the smallest!) isn’t going to help the staying healthy part.
Also, very few players play 162 games.
David Young - January 3, 2012
The point is if he plays 130-150 games he'll come damn close to 30
I don’t think it will be the parks he will be playing in that will hurt him, if anything it will be his health. If he gets 140+ games this year I think he could hit 30 HR.

Haven’t been around since the fight on Friday, but your Brock pick didn’t hold up. That’s two heavyweight fights (of consequence) in a row where the elite stiker beat the wrester (JDS and Reem.)
Also, your boy Fitch took one hell of a shot. Diaz/Cerrone fight was great too. All in all a fun card.
Michael White - January 3, 2012
Two HW fights in a row where the elite wrestler didn’t take a real shot on the striker and got beat up because of it.
fbihop - January 3, 2012
I re-watched the JDS fight last night and Cain took one shot. Short of just trying to tackle the opponent immediately, the wrestler still needs to set up the takedown attempt. The Cain knockout just happened so damn fast. And Brock didn’t want to clinch with Reem after he took the first mammoth knee. Man, those were nasty.
Michael White - January 3, 2012
Brock never tried one of his bullrush double-legs that no one has been able to stop (though Velasquez and Carwin were able to get up from them after). That surprised me the most.

Out of curiosity, whyt the Coffee Bean hate>
court168627 - January 3, 2012
It started with them not having decaf available in the morning. Not a huge deal but it aggravates me after a while. Next they propose an alternative solution which I’m a bit skeptical about because I don’t want sugar/carbs. They assure me that there’s nothing to worry about.
After I saw the “barista” dumping 3 teaspoons of sugar into the drink I had enough.

I stopped drinking coffee habitually in the office a couple years ago. I get a little caffeine from tea, such as English (or Irish) Breakfast tea, but ending the many mugs a day habit seems to work out well for me. I no longer get any tired spells during the day. I don’t get caffeine withdrawal headaches when I am away from the office for a couple days.
I still like coffee, especially with rich desserts, but sometimes I get it regular, and sometimes I get it decaf, esp if I know the place makes a quality decaf.

decaf? I dont get the reason for decaf… I guess some people really enjoy the flavor of dirt water… for me the caffeine was the whole reason I started with coffee. Otherwise I dont get the purpose of drinking it.

Dunkin have terrible donuts. Krispy Kreme is ok. But I have the same perspective about donuts (here) that I do about pizza (from back home): why would you ever buy from a chain when you can have better quality at the same convenience from a local shop?
court168627 - January 3, 2012
Krispy Kreme donuts are crappy donuts
I’m not even sure they should be called donuts, or just sugar rings

Sugar rings has a nice…ring to it.
And agreed. Lots of hype for those donuts; tough to match.

court168627 - January 3, 2012
As they should have. Clearly superior product at just about every indy doughnut shop I have set foot in.
David Young - January 3, 2012
Its the baker, and baking a fresh batch every night. A chain simply can’t hire a baker for every location they have. And shipping in donuts is a losing proposition from the outset.
Of course, the unsaid thing is that small indy shops are either being made by the owners themselves or paying somebody under the table to a baker willing to work throughout the night.
Tripon - January 3, 2012
Serious question. If that’s true, how did Western Bagel penetrate the West Coast market? They can’t have a baker at every location.
Michael White - January 3, 2012
Maybe people are more willing to accept less fresh bagels than donuts.
Tripon - January 3, 2012
I feel like it would be the opposite.

Grimjack - January 3, 2012

yeah, been there 60 years or so
mleadman - January 3, 2012
Thanks, then that is the place. My mom used to work at St. Vincent’s (where I was born, back when they actually had a maternity ward – they took one look at me and immediately got out of the business), so we were in that neighborhood all the time. And of course Langer’s in the other direction on Alvarado.
David Young - January 3, 2012
I don't see why the chains couldn't have a baker

he's not so bad
but I really wanted Spero Dedes to be the guy
Tommy Blackjack - January 3, 2012
is he the guy who dates 17 year old girls, or was that an Angels announcer?
Xeifrank - January 3, 2012
yes
nolander - January 3, 2012
this is just wrong

Joey Joe - January 4, 2012
Hey! She told him she was 23. But why does he always have to pick her up at the middle school?

The Jets didn't end up as a winning team? Wow

Heyman tweeting
Joe Torre has resigned his MLB job to join a group trying to buy the Dodgers.
Tommy Blackjack - January 4, 2012 via iPhone app
Gosh.
“@TBrownYahoo: MLB announces Joe Torre resignation. He’s joined a group that will pursue purchase of Dodgers.”
underdog - January 4, 2012 via mobile
I also just read that the deadline was pushed back to Jan 23 for bids to be submitted.

Tommy Blackjack - January 4, 2012 via iPhone app
Not sure I really like the idea of Torre being involved. Somehow I think he would be more inclined to keep Ned around.
OB12 - January 4, 2012
I dunno – he seems to like TBLA favorite, the local can do no wrong gal, Kim Ng an awful lot
I can see that story line
Hollywood Joe - January 4, 2012
You’re right. I could see him hiring Ng and the coaching staff would probably be safe, so that’s a plus. I guess he wouldn’t be that bad as the team president.
OB12 - January 4, 2012
I can’t see old boys club vice president Joe Torre leading the diversity in baseball charge. I expect someone he either played with or someone ago played for him to be GM. How does Paul O’neill, GM sound?
G.Scott - January 4, 2012 via Android app
Grumpy.
Tim Crews' Dastardly Mustache - January 4, 2012
he liked Kim enough to hire her as SVP of Baseball ops
Hollywood Joe - January 4, 2012
Paul O’neill would immediately either sign Ethier to a long term deal or challenge him to a helmet breaking contest.
OB12 - January 4, 2012
I doubt that's true about Ned, but yeah the idea gives me pause too
As part of a large group led by a billionaire though, I won’t mind it as much. Still rooting for Magic group though.
underdog - January 4, 2012 via mobile
Yeah, in my mind the Magic group is the favorite at this point. Seems like a real solid group.

just read
The guy heading the group is Rick Caruso. Real Estate guy. Don’t know more than that.
Tommy Blackjack - January 4, 2012 via iPhone app
Now, I am going back to thinking that it would be a bad idea for Torre to be involved. He is not that far removed from the on-the-field product and my fear is that he would exert too much control over player personnel decisions. That concerns me.
OB12 - January 4, 2012
Caruso
The Grove
City Walk
Americana in Glendale
Dude will make the stadium a year round mall – bank on that. I don’t have a problem with that
Hollywood Joe - January 4, 2012
I too would enjoy going to the stadium more in the offseason
G.Scott - January 4, 2012 via Android app
Well at least it’s not Tony Larussa, right?
Right?
:(
regfairfield - January 4, 2012
reg haz a sad
Tommy Blackjack - January 4, 2012 via iPhone app
Why is this making you cringe exactly?
Julio Nievas - January 4, 2012 via mobile
A) I’m tired of Torre being the face of the Dodgers even though he has absolutely nothing to do with us but drinking with Sandy Koufax.
B) I have no faith that Torre will just shut up and be a figurehead so that’s gonna lead to bringing in more old school guys and falling further and further behind the rest of the league.
regfairfield - January 4, 2012
Ditto
Tim Crews' Dastardly Mustache - January 4, 2012
I never got the impression that Torre even liked Los Angeles
Michael White - January 4, 2012
But he did that commercial!
Tommy Blackjack - January 4, 2012 via iPhone app
always had same feeling
delias man - January 4, 2012
I got the opposite feeling, what is not to love
Hollywood Joe - January 4, 2012
Los Angeles has a spotlight
Torre likes that
Eric Stephen - January 4, 2012
Just read Caruso and Torre's release
Sounds like they want to improve DS first and foremost.

The stadium is fine, sign good players first
Michael White - January 4, 2012
that sounds like something caruso would be concerned about, not torre
delias man - January 4, 2012
Exactly
Sounds like deveLoping property is Caruso’s bread and butter and handing Torre the baseball state of mind. Count me out.
Julio Nievas - January 4, 2012 via mobile
count me out too
magics group would be OK, but i want the fat bald rich guy
delias man - January 4, 2012
Apparently
Caruso wants to be mayor.
funkyjam - January 4, 2012 via mobile
I’ll have a post up in a little bit on this.
Eric Stephen - January 4, 2012
For people who know
When the winning bid is announced, what happens next? How long does the whole transaction process drag out? Thanks
Julio Nievas - January 4, 2012 via mobile
Depends on if McCourt accepts PayPal.
Tim Crews' Dastardly Mustache - January 4, 2012
I have no idea but it seems like if the bids are due Jan 23, they will take at least a good month to analyze and evaluate each one, get them pre-approved and announce the winning bid mid-late March. They probably want at least 30 days for transistion.
OB12 - January 4, 2012
I'd take this Caruso bid seriously
that investment banker he has is no joke
Hollywood Joe - January 4, 2012
What do you mean? Big money?
OB12 - January 4, 2012
And no Whammy
Tommy Blackjack - January 4, 2012 via iPhone app
