The Dodgers have signed Mike MacDougal to return to their bullpen for a one-year deal, worth a reported $1 million according to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. Yeah, I was expecting a two-year deal, too. This deal could be two years though, as there is a club option for 2013.
MacDougal will get paid $650,000 in 2012, and the club option in 2013 is worth $2.35 million with a buyout of $350,000, per Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.
MacDougal had a weird season in 2011. It looked superficially good with a 2.05 ERA in 57 innings and a career-high 69 games, but the peripherals were not as strong. He walked 29 batters in 57 innings against just 41 strikeouts. MacDougal allowed opposing hitters to post a .352 on-base percentage, and his walk rate of 4.6 per nine innings was actually his best mark in five years.
While MacDougal didn't allow many runs against his own ledger, it seemed like MacDougal allowed all sorts of runners that counted against other pitchers. But MacDougal wasn't that bad at allowing inherited runners to score (33.3% versus a league average of 30.0%), he just happened to seemingly always enter games with runners on base. MacDougal inherited 51 runners in 2011, sixth most in the National League. He allowed two of his 13 inherited runners to score over the final two months.
The return of MacDougal means there are five locks for what will likely be a seven-man bullpen in 2012: Javy Guerra, Kenley Jansen, Matt Guerrier, MacDougal, and Scott Elbert. Gurnick mentions Josh Lindblom as a likely bullpen candidate, but there is also Blake Hawksworth, who is out of options. If the Dodgers want a second southpaw in the pen to go with Elbert, the other left-handers invited to spring training are Michael Antonini, Alberto Castillo, Matt Chico, John Grabow, Wil Ledezma, and Scott Rice.
In other words, spring training isn't expected to feature many battles for jobs, with either 22 or 23 of the 25 opening day roster spots already set.

1yr/$1m is a good deal.
But of course a lot of people will hate it.

it is a good deal
I don’t hate it
but I have no residual Ned hatred so I try to see each deal on its own merits and not part of a larger conspiracy to make me angry

Could have been worse
It could have been a true two-year contract with money deferred until 2018. Also, I guess there’s almost no chance Kuo gets brought back now, is there? If not, it’s a damn shame: he’s been one of my favorite players for a long time now.

I need a new watch. Well, a second watch. My first watch, an antique, mechanical winding Wittnauer, has fritzed again. I am getting it fixed but the guy at the watch shop says I just live too hard for to wear an antique every day. So I need a new, modern watch.
I want to spend some money, but not crazy money.
Any suggestions?
Humma Kavula - January 5, 2012
You’ll need to get more specific on price range, even if it’s a big range.

Hollywood Joe - January 5, 2012
The number I have in mind is $500 but I’m flexible. I don’t want to go to $1,000 but if what I really want is $750 I will bite. Less than $500 would be better though.

uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
you have no idea how much watches cost do you?
Hollywood Joe - January 5, 2012
Oh I know they can be really expensive depending on brand, etc…. but a watch isnt something useful enough for me to spend 500 on…. Im cool with Fossil watches, etc….. If I did spend alot of money on a watch id go 50 cent and get an all diamond one…. now were talkin, bling, bling!
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
A good watch will last 10 times longer then a fossil

I have owned three watches in the past 27 years
Two Seikos (that my wife bought long ago) and a Citizen (that my company gave me). Similar watches are probably ~$200 today, I’d guess.

yeah or Seiko, Citizen, thats cool.

That watch is gorgeous. My Wittnauer looks something like that — it is solid 14K gold — with hidden lugs (there are gold bars where the face meets the band, giving it a nice neat transition from watch to band).
Humma Kavula - January 5, 2012
I'm just not big on gold

I was going into jewelry stores all the time to look at the vintage mechanical watches, but I could never pull the trigger on any of them. She got this for me and I love it. It is the best present I ever received.

My dad always wanted, and one year my mom gave him, silver collar stays. Now tell me, what is the point of silver collar stays? No one can see the collar stay. Why should it matter what it is made of? Besides, I am always forgetting to take out my removable collar stays when I put my shirt into the wash. Cheap plastic collar stays, why not?

My dad shined my shoes and pressed my shirts better than anyone ever will. When he was sick, he would iron my shirts and tell me that looking sharp is an advantage and a courtesy. My dad learned how to press shirts in jail, had an 8th grade education, could be as nasty mean as could be, and the most charming gentleman you ever met

My best baseball memory of my dad is that he tried.
My old man was from the generation that showed their love by working their ass of to pay the mortgage and put dinner on the table. He wasn’t athletic at all, but he was the strongest man in the world, at least how I remember. My mom used to actually catch me when I was playing youth ball, dad never was particularly into baseball. But I have a vivid memory, one time, he took time off of work to come and umpire one of my games because the league needed volunteers. He didn’t know all the rules, his strike zone was iffy, but I was so proud of my old man, Blue for a Day.
Tim Crews' Dastardly Mustache - January 5, 2012
Cool story
Hollywood Joe - January 5, 2012
Nice.
My dad wasn’t the most athletic guy either, but he did take the time to hit me tennis ball fungoes out front, on our hilly residential street.
David Young - January 5, 2012
My love for baseball comes directly from my pops
built us a mound in our backyard, and coached many of me and my brothers little league teams. When he wasn’t doing that he would umpire.

Humma Kavula - January 5, 2012
My Dad built me a baseball field behind our house when I was six. I used to watch him play baseball and fast pitch softball at least three times a week. He was a little guy: about 5’-7", tallest in his family, and was the fastest sonofabitch I ever saw. Never saw him get thrown out on a bunt.
He’s 85 now, and getting smaller every day, but in my mind’s eye, I still see him as that 28 year old giant, showing me how to play the game.

Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
Read more carefully, young man, and count your Roman numerals..
Your father, iiidown, has been postingall year. Phil keeps referring to him as iidown, which makes iidown mythical.
But now, yiour father iiidown, refers to his father, who is the TRUE iidown by the same process that made Ivdown’s father iiidown.
Yo the best of my knowledge, this is the first time that your grandfather – iidown – has made an appearance in a story at TBLA. That’s what I was referring to.
Short version : ii, not iii. Pay attention, Iv.

Ivdown - January 6, 2012
lmao, too good.
Ivdown - January 6, 2012
Actually, I’m just happy that you didn’t get your own nickname right – didn’t you say you actually meant to call yourself ixdown? (9) That would have made your father viiidown, which is just too many roman numerals to have to type. And would also pit your family history far too deep into the mists of time; we’d never get to the end of it. The way it is now, we can hope that someday in the future, the ur-parent idown might even make it into a story.
berkowit28 - January 6, 2012
lol, that's right
I’m glad it worked out the way it did anyway, i think it works well.

My dad, who is still with us, is not nearly so colorful (he ended up a CPA after all, his membership in Rutgers Scarlet Barbarians notwithstanding), but I do have memories of watching him shave with a classic double-edged razor, lathering his face with shaving soap in a cup, applied with a shaving brush.

I use gel and a three-blade razor, so I’m kind of wimpy, but when the daughter was home for Xmas, she saw me shaving and remarked, " [ex-BF] used an electric razor, which seemed wimpy to me, probably because I always saw you shave with a blade."
On a related note, I really need to try a really good barbershop style, straight-razor shave some time, hot towels and all.
David Young - January 5, 2012
That is the absolute best. Last time I had surgery, I didn’t shave for weeks and the shave I splurged for was so awesome. Having that straightrazor on your neck is a bit unnerving, but that’s because I’m not a tough guy.

My Dad was a lifelong gambler and pretty much a lifelong losing gambler
the year he got sick, we shared a bookie, and he won every single weekend of that football season. He was able to play through early December, before he got too sick and passed away in early Jan
Before he died, he told my Mom where he kept the cash from the book, it was in the interior pocket of a sport coat in his closet, told her to divide it up among us 4 kids as the last present from him.

The only time I ever really wore a watch was when I was 16 or so. I don’t remember the brand but I do remember spending over $100 on it. I stopped wearing it all the time a few months later when I started golfing. I’m very happy with a Citizen “Eco-Drive” watch that runs on solar power and never, ever needs batteries or winding. It just runs forever (about 6 years so far). It’s also extremely slim and very elegant – simple face with simple strokes at the 5-minute marks (a double-dash fro 12:00 only). They have other faces too. I got a leather strap but they make others. I’ll see if I can find a photo. If I remember correctly it cost only about $200+, but I might not have remembered well, I’ll see if I can find it.

I give the guy credit. At least he didn’t stick it under a lamp while I walked around the mall and charge me 15 bucks for changing the battery.

That would have been even more hilarious.

Stiletto – about 30 models. Mine is one of them as I described it – $200. (These here have Roman numerals.)
There are hundreds more on the site.
berkowit28 - January 5, 2012
I have two Raymond Weil's
Swiss watches – one was around $1K and the other was a a little more. Very light and low profile (very low off the wrist). One has a black face and teh other has a gold face. Had them both for about 10 years – no problems.
Dodgers1981 - January 5, 2012
I have a small wrist
That is why the Weil worked good for me. I saw on Ebay where you can get different models for under $500.

I have what’s called the “Vostok Komandirskie”, though the strap is metal, not leather.

Eric Stephen - January 5, 2012

Hollywood Joe - January 5, 2012
What’s that mean anyway? Google yields nothing, no acronyms, no urban trash-talk slang, nothing at all except texting or lazy abbrev for “hitting”, which I know you don’t mean. No one knows your acronym in the big world, and neither do I.

Eric Stephen - January 5, 2012
TBLA specials. But I was here when it happened. (Personally, I think swesoke should be obliterated. It was forced on us by someone or other who kept insisting. Totally contrived. awesoke is good. It happened naturally, by hazard.)
I wasn’t here for HITNG, and am getting irritated. You’re pretty well the only one who uses it, with the occasional exception.

I was about to say “i still don’t understand.” Then I scrolled up and saw that it was just explained. Sorry.
court168627 - January 5, 2012
OK, sure. I can see “G” might stand for Green. Is HIT just “hit” or 3 words? And what’s N?

On Star Wars, I was watching “Return of the Jedi” and like “The Godfather” and other old movies I have seen over and over again, I enjoy the familiarity of the story and events but I do think that as characters, the main trio really don’t change much during the films and in some respects, the story is somewhat confused (is it about Luke facing his father, is it about the Rebellion taking down the Emperor).

I was actually wondering yesterday when we were talking about this graduate student transer thing….. I wonder why more players dont do it that are good, but on a not so good team, to have one shot at winning a title before going pro?
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
Players who are good don’t always graduate.
Eric Stephen - January 5, 2012
right, and I thought about it, and if you are a really good player in a crappy program, you’re probably gone to the NFL before you graduate most likely anyways.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
Armond Armstead is thinking of transferring to ND (from USC) so that he can play his final college year with his little brother (who is being recruited by ND). Because USC held him out all of last year for medical reasons Armond would be allowed to play right away.
The only problem is USC has to give permission to him to go to USC and most schools wont let their players go to another school that they will play against. USC has no interest in playing him next year and he’s pissed at the school for not allowing him to play last year (he got medical clearance from a number of doctors but USC didn’t clear him).
Is USC wrong for not allowing him to transfer to ND (if that’s where he chooses)? Or is it just a smart move by the school? Is it any different from what St Joe’s coach is doing? I’d love to pick him up as a ND fan just because it will almost guarantee his brother chooses ND but I can understand USC’s side of it.
VegasBlues - January 5, 2012
this is bullshit
schools using NCAA rules to control players they don’t pay
fuck them
Hollywood Joe - January 5, 2012
That scholarship is a pretty damn big payment in my opinion.
VegasBlues - January 5, 2012
sure it has value – I don’t dispute that
but when it allows schools to control kids who want to go to another school – I call bullshit
Hollywood Joe - January 5, 2012
Those kids can still go to another school. They just have to pay their own way for one year.
VegasBlues - January 5, 2012
sure and then he can’t play with his brother
I think its bullshit
Hollywood Joe - January 5, 2012
Boo hoo
Michael White - January 5, 2012
I really don’t care
I’m just giving opinion
Hollywood Joe - January 5, 2012
He could if he paid for it. No clue if his family has the money to pay for that though.
VegasBlues - January 5, 2012
are you sure?
i see no mention of scholarship
nolander - January 5, 2012
I’m piecing things together from what I know about transfers. I could be wrong but I don’t think I am. I think he is eligible to transfer anywhere he wants but when it comes to scholarships his current school has to approve of him going to his new school. If they don’t approve of that new school then the student has to pay his own way for a year.
VegasBlues - January 5, 2012
Didnt the little bro originally commit to SC, then backed out, but still has SC as a possible destination?
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
He backed out because of how they treated (or how his family felt they treated) his older brother. As far as I know he is no longer considering USC.
VegasBlues - January 5, 2012
I think it’s down to CAL, Oregon, ND, and like one other school.
VegasBlues - January 5, 2012
yeah I dont see Rivals listed anymore.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
haha, I meant, I dont see SC listed anymore as an option.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
The best I can answer the question is most likely the school will only allow a player to leave to a school they approve. I would think ND would not be a school they would approve of. I guess you could call it a dick move, but I also see it as a player chose to commit to that school, and is getting a free ride, and shouldnt be a cry baby and want to run away because he isnt getting the PT he thinks he should get. If you are good enough, you will play, so work hard to get PT, and you will.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
But im going to look more into this because I never really heard of this story, the part about him being cleared by doctors, but not SC, and see what that is about.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
Actually because of the sanctions, he was free to leave to any school, without sitting out a year, so why didnt he then? I dont know if the door has closed on players being able to still do that or not…. I dont get why SC wouldnt clear him though if he isnt hurt, weird.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
because they where not being dicks to him then
nolander - January 5, 2012
I didnt know looking out for your players health is being dicks haha….
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
Everything really depends on the circumstances behind it all. I’m not sure anyone truly knows why USC held him out after he passed all the tests they performed on him.
VegasBlues - January 5, 2012
He wanted to play for USC. He didn’t want to transfer. He also wants to play football though and USC isn’t allowing that to happen.

VegasBlues - January 5, 2012
There is more to the story than those 1,000 words (roughly)? :)
Eric Stephen - January 5, 2012
I was going to cut it down a lot more but then I read the last two quotes from him and figured they should be mentioned.
That was still only about half of the article though. ;)
VegasBlues - January 5, 2012
yeah weird… what is the medical condition I wonder?? Why cant they say? wonder what it usually is when they dont want to say what it is? like an STD or something? I think SC can fix this with him though, I cant see why they wouldnt want him to play if he can play.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
HIPAA privacy rule
Eric Stephen - January 5, 2012
It’s possible (not really sure on this) that while out for medical reasons that the scholarship isn’t counted against the schools total number of scholarships. If that is true and USC was up against their cap then not clearing him medically would make sense. This is just a wild ass guess of an assumption though. No clue if any of it would be true. Something like that could be the reason behind holding him out.
Or they don’t think he’s healthy enough to play but he was plenty of healthy enough to workout with the team all year long.
As for why the medical condition isn’t released. All patients have the right to keep their medical history private. In a lot of cases the schools can’t discuss specifics even if they student allows them to.
VegasBlues - January 5, 2012
Maybe Eric knows better…. but I cant remember USC ever allowing a player go to a Pac 10 school or ND, ever…. but maybe…. Only player I can even think off right now that left for a top school was Emanuel Moody to Florida.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
Most conferences
frown on inter-conference transfers.
You will see players who get released from programs sometimes go to a school in the same conference but that is still pretty rare.

speaking of axe
Does it bother anyone when people say “AX” instead of “ASK” when saying…Can I ASK you something"..
Drives me crazy and the other day i was actually listening to this announcer do a high school game and he used “AX” the whole game.
It it that hard pronounce the word the way its spelled – A-S-K?
Joey Joe - January 5, 2012
Why was an announcer at a high school game asking so many questions?
Michael White - January 5, 2012
It was television.
He’d be announcing the game and say something like “Ya really gotta Aks yourself…what were they thinking fouling the 3pt shooter?”
Stuff like that
Joey Joe - January 5, 2012
Okay, that makes more sense.
I figured a high school announcer (at the game) would be saying things like “30 second timeout”
Michael White - January 5, 2012
Just drives me nuts.
I can deal with listening to people say “ya know, you know” over and over again in an interview bc when publically speaking…sometimes its subliminal and using transitions in public speaking can be difficult.
But AKS drives me bat shit crazy! and i usually dont care about anything.
Joey Joe - January 5, 2012
lighten up Francis
Hollywood Joe - January 5, 2012
You are not alone…. The AX over ask thing has been debated for along time…. made fun of all the time too. Stu Lantz kinda says that I think too no? or some other words he doesnt pronounce correctly, or so my dad says. He’s also a Kobe nut hugger according to my dad.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
I don’t say Aks, I correct my nephews when they say it
that said, I think complaining about it is pretty much bullshit noise. It doesn’t harm anyone and what is being communicated is clearly understood.
I don’t know if Joey falls into this category or not, that is up to him, but the people I’ve known who seem to get the most worked up about this seems to be doing it to feel better about themselves by mocking someone else. Which can be fun from time to time, but is mostly ugly and often racist
Hollywood Joe - January 5, 2012
If you are a public speaker, you should probably make the best effort to speak in a manner that is clear and understandable. If I am on a tour and I can barely make out what the tour guide is saying because of slang or over use of “street talk” then I am not going to enjoy myself and likely complain. If I am in a casual conversation with someone then it doesn’t matter to me. Aks instead of ask is probably not crossing the line in the sand for me.
Xeifrank - January 5, 2012
I agree with everything you wrote
Hollywood Joe - January 5, 2012
maybe you should learn street talk then, you’ll need it if you’re ever alone in the streets.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012

uschris0304 - January 5, 2012

im kidding about the racist….. but some brothers say ax instead of ask…. why I dont know, maybe it is hard for them…. either way, you understand what they mean, thats all that matters.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012

Goes on 40+ mile bike rides, runs sprint triathlons (400m swim, 20K bike ride, 5K run) and I went skiing with him on Tuesday; I could barely walk and he had no problems. He took up soccer when I went to high school and only stopped because he blew out his knee.

From #2 in the Kershaw draft….to being dealt for nothing.
Joey Joe - January 5, 2012
more i look at that draft..
what were the Rockies thinking taking him #2 overall?
He wasnt even dominant in college…his k rate wasnt good there, and was even worse in the pros.
Joey Joe - January 5, 2012
It was a “he’s low ceiling, but he can help us almost immediately” pick. They probably liked that he’s a ground ball pitcher.
These kind of picks never work. Especially considering how fast Longoria made it to the bigs.
regfairfield - January 5, 2012
On talent
the draft should have been Lincecum, Longoria and then you could probably argue between Andrew Miller and Kershaw. We all know how it turned out but no one was going to take Clayton until maybe Detroit at No. 6.
bhsportsguy - January 5, 2012
I definitely remember Andrew Miller as the consensus number one in that draft but he was going to be expensive. Didn’t Lincecum slip because of size issues?
regfairfield - January 5, 2012
that
and no one liked his mechanics
Tommy Blackjack - January 5, 2012
He was affordable
and the Rockies never think they can get FA pitchers there. Plus as a college pitcher, he would hopefully be ready sooner.
Heck, the Royals took a guy who hadn’t pitched for almost a year.
bhsportsguy - January 5, 2012
You may be right, but isnt drafting more about projection, then stats? I have no idea what the projection in him was.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
How much projecting can you do when the guy had already completed college?
I’d never draft a college player unless they were completely dominant at that level
Joey Joe - January 5, 2012
yeah I guess you are right.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
But that goes the other way too
For pitchers, you have players that have for one, have not gotten hurt for at least 3 more years and you have an idea of what they can do. A high school player is nothing but projection, you have no idea if he can get another pitch or pitch to more advanced players.
Hitters, I’d agree but since few college hitters are drafted in the first round anyway, it really never comes up that much.
bhsportsguy - January 5, 2012
found a draft scouting report on him…. said he was likely to end up no more then a 4th starter… yeah thats not a good #2 overall pick
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012
Sinker ball pitcher
who they thought was gonna be a work horse. Exact reason why you draft the best players and dont draft based on roster needs. It was a good idea, just not with the 2nd pick in the draft
NotJoeTorre - January 5, 2012
I wouldn’t think that people would draft based on roster needs since players take a few years to develop and who knows what your roster will look like by then.

Gin
So, a week or two ago, I was on my way to an annual party where the hosts make a big deal of preparing various “martinis”. Only they;re not really martinis – they’re vodkatinis. I’m old school – martini means gin and dry vermouth. The only variables are 1) which gin 2) how little vermouth? 3) shaken or stirred 4) lemon zest or olive. My father taught me to make them for parties when I was about 11 or 12, though I wasn’t allowed to taste until I was about 16 or so. (I copme form a more enlightened place than the US.) I’d pretty well forgotten all about martinis years ago, but this year, after demurring the vodkatinis for several years, I decided to put my money where my mouth was, and bring some gin and accoutrements to the party.
Going back to my father’s day (we’re talking 1960 here),. I was prepared to bring some Tanqueray. But someone I know clued me in that there are now superior premium gins. He recommended Hendricks. It’s fantastic! It was a hot at the party (all gone well before the end – I was kept quite busy). It’s great all on its own. The “botanicals” are amazing. But I have to admit that it’s even zingier with a tiny bit of Noilly Prat. I’ve refuced my proportions – my father’s were 5 or 6 gin to 1 vermouth. So a jigger (if anyone knows what that is – 1.5 oz) gin to a tablespoon of vermouth. With Hendricks, I’ve reduced the vermouth to a teaspoon – it still “wakes up” the gin. With a lemon twist mostly for the ritual.
I quickly got through another bottle over a week or two, and I’m now experimenting with other premium gins – Bombay Sapphire and Citadelle so far, others to come. Each has its own character (Hendricks spicy, Sapphire more floral, Citadelle more herbal).
It’s a real pick-me-up. I’ve got to watch it – I’m completely captivated.

I
am a vodka person more than a gin person. But I get what you are talking about.

Tim Crews' Dastardly Mustache - January 5, 2012
Always gin for martinis
At first I thought this was a Humma comment until I got to the first parenthetical. I still like about 5:1 for my Bombay Sapphire martini, or roughly halfway in between the 3:1 (jigger:tablespoon) and 9:1 (jigger:teaspoon) you mentioned. I use a shaker for convenience, but I don’t violently shake it, more of a gently swirl to chill the drink will imparting just a small amount of the water.
I have never tried Hendricks though.
David Young - January 6, 2012
The best way is to keep the gin in the freezer and the vermouth in the fridge. That way you don’t need ice at all, so no dilution, and barely-stirred is all that’s needed. When that’s not possible, then i agree with your lightly-shaken method.
Hendricks is great, as are Bombay Sapphire and Citagelle. Next in my sights (they were sold out last week): Martin Miller Westbourne and G’Vine Nouaison. See here: http://www.tastings.com/search_spirits.lasso , and select Gin.
I’ve been waiting for Humma and HJ to comment. (Yes, I’ve seen Leopold’s too, and will try eventually. The guy at the store told me Anchor Steam are now alsop distilling small batch gin.) Maybe HJ doesn’t imbibe gin by choice.
berkowit28 - January 6, 2012
I’ve also been wanting to try Genever, which is a similar spirit to Gin out of, I believe, Scandinavia. I hear it’s really something.
When I know what it is, I’ll let you know.
Humma Kavula - January 6, 2012
Holland (Netherlands) and Belgium, not Scandinavia.
It’s very different, I’m told, since it ages in casks, like whisky. I’ll try sometime too. I looked for it last week, but they didn’t seem t have it. They did have Plymouth and Old Tom though, so sooner or later I’ll try those.

Humma Kavula - January 6, 2012
Low Country gin, hmmmm.
David Young - January 6, 2012
Actually jigger:tablespoon is 6:1 and jigger:teaspoon is 18:1! (A jigger is 1.5 oz; 2 tablespoons to an ounce, 3 tsps to a tb).
With “regular” gin I’m happy with 5:1 or 6:1. But with these premium gins, I’m coming around to an overflowing teaspoon, so somewhere around 12:1. You’d think it would be undetectable, or if detectable at all, would not improve the gin. (I don’t like the taste of vermouth on its own at all.) But, amazingly, it does seem to enhance the taste and increase the zing! factor.
berkowit28 - January 6, 2012
I liked a story I came upon about Winston Churchill, who claimed that the correct proportion is achieved if you merely waft the vermouth cork over the glass of gin a couple of times. ;-)
berkowit28 - January 6, 2012
I think he said he’d wave in the direction of France and that was enough.
Then again, it is probably all apocryphal.
fbihop - January 6, 2012
Humma and I say, “Feh! It’s not a martini without a bit of vermouth”.
Tom Lehrer said, “Hearts full of youth, hearts full of truth, six parts gin to one part vermouth.”
David Young - January 6, 2012
Right. They have a word (well, a phrase) for a martini with extremely little or no vermouth: “a glass of gin.”
Humma Kavula - January 6, 2012
As a part-mathematician, I suck at arithmetic. 5:1 puts me in the neighborhood of your jigger:T ratio then.
David Young - January 6, 2012
I drink Sapphire, generally, but it’s mostly by accident. I go through a lot of the stuff and the big bottle is inexpensive at Costco.
There are several different kinds of gin. The one we’re talking about here is London Dry Gin and that is good but I like other kids as well, particularly Old Tom, which is the gin one uses in a Tom Collins if you’re making it right. It is much sweeter than London Dry, and in fact, I like it in a G&T.
I hear that the truly great gin is Leopold’s, which is handmade in small batches. I haven’t tried it but I should; I hear it’s wonderful. It is expensive, though; the 750mL bottle costs twice what the 1.75L bottle of Sapphire costs.

But there have been some crazy rumors about what he’s been doing the finally few weeks, some kind of mani/pedi story, and I didnt really like the way he called out his team after the loss to SD. Its true the team didnt show up, but as the HC, its his job to get them ready and prepared, and IMO he should be the one taking the blame for it, not pushing it all on his players, and DC.
uschris0304 - January 5, 2012

I can see calling Mason a moron, not saying I agree, but I get where some would say that. But I think Ireland is a pretty smart guy, not in sports, but in general. But maybe not.
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
I think they play dumb more than they really “are” dumb. Their whole schtick where they take opposing views on issues, debate them, then have people call in and pick sides can make one or both look like an idiot trying to defend something that makes very little or no sense. We have a local ESPN affiliate up here now that I try to listen to so I don’t have to listen to those guys. They do play the national stuff but at least I get some local stuff which is more interesting than the blathering and I can always switch over to the blathering if I want it.

uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
haha, nope.
gdl - January 6, 2012
I heard that part
And I think they were right on, cause as you read Macciello’s comments on Baly’s blog, you realize that he isn’t actually a billionaire, and this whole thing about money from mining sounds more like he’s got some sort of prospective development opportunity. But that scares me, because then it just sounds like another McCourt situation, east coast dude leveraging himself to be able to make this deal happen. If that’s the case he isn’t making it past MLB.
Champ Kind - January 6, 2012
Also...
Since he is pretty slippery, it makes me think he is using Mason and Ireland to try and curry favor with Dodger fans, which perhaps he thinks will help him get more support with MLB.
Its interesting that both Mason and Ireland called him a billionaire, he doesn’t correct them, and then now he’s backtracking. Also, according to Ireland, supposedly Ramona Shelbourne is working on an article on him, hmmm.

I think hard core USA hockey fans dislike Canada, and thats where that comes from. Im sure some in Canada do the same, and other countries as well. Oh well.
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
Then they must like shitty hockey
because if it was nothing but Americans…
nolander - January 6, 2012
I don’t believe Chris’ statement to be true at all.
Michael White - January 6, 2012
I thought so, maybe not. The hockey fans I know hate Canada, while else would they other then because of the hockey rivalry? who knows.
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
Anyways, speaking of Kings, please get some dam scorers in here…. Cant believe how hard it is for Kings to score goals.
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
by the way, just to clarify my possibly wrong statement, I didnt mean a dislike Canada for anything other then a hockey angle, not personal against the country.
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
Canada breathes a sigh of relief
meercatjohn - January 6, 2012
The girls in Montreal are enough for me to never hate Canada
Hollywood Joe - January 6, 2012

Dodgers spring training tickets are on sale now.
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
I believe I’ve asked this in the past, but there’s not a huge need to pre-order tickets, correct? You can just show up and buy tickets day of game.
Michael White - January 6, 2012
Yeah, you should be able to buy tickets day of
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
Might be different this spring, pent up demand to see the newcomers (Ellis, Kennedy, Treanor, Capang) has to be huge. Probably rivals Angel fans hoping to get a look at their old 1st baseman and new fourth starter.
meercatjohn - January 6, 2012
Ah, that there is some good ol’ fashioned snark.
OB12 - January 6, 2012
The Sun came up
keithc13 - January 6, 2012
yeah I cant imagine it hard to get a ST ticket at all….. But maybe you should buy them now before we sign Fielder, because then it wont be so easy.
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
I can’t remember if there were any sellouts at Camelback last year, but IIRC the Cubs generally are a good draw so you might want to plan ahead (maybe) if it’s Dodgers-Cubs.
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
Capacity at CBR is ~13,000
with 3,000 of those lawn seats.
In 2011 spring training, here were the Dodgers home dates that sold over 10,000 tickets:
Friday, March 4 vs. SF: 11,261
Saturday, March 19 vs. Mil: 12,141 (no doubt because Dave & I were there)
In 2010, there were only three home dates over 10,000:
Thursday, March 18 vs. ChC: 13,391
Saturday, March 20 vs. SD: 13,506
Saturday, March 27 vs. Sea: 13,582
In 2009 (first year at CBR), there were six:
Sunday, March 1 vs. CHW: 11,280 (first game at CBR)
Saturday, March 7 vs. Sea: 11,896
Sunday, March 15 vs. Col: 11,175
Tuesday. March 17 vs. Cubs: 13,046
Sunday, March 22 vs. Tex: 11,259
Sunday, March 29 vs. SD: 10,561
In other words, keep an eye on the weekends or against the Cubs, but you should be fine getting seats the day of the game.
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
That Friday game against the Giants last spring was a night game BTW. I believe Maddz, Gary, and Ghost of K3Vo were in attendance.
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
Even then, Maddz knew Splash Navarro was not a real ballplayer

British Empiricism FTW
But, but, but Hume
set in motion Kant and influenced Adam Smith
the world is very different without Hume
Hollywood Joe - January 6, 2012
I get it. And by set in motion, you mean “allowed Kant to rip him apart.” Kant is one of the few pre-20c philosophers that I enjoy reading (not necessarily because of his thought, but because of his readability). My point is that philophy becomes a very different animal in the 20c, for better and worse, and that I find it much more enjoyable at that point.
court168627 - January 6, 2012
I did mean this
the progression of thought dies when we agree with what came before us
I think the last half the 20th century we lost the soul of philosophy and thought ourselves into a corner. In some ways, science is killing philosophy as we knew it and not sure where it goes from here
Hollywood Joe - January 6, 2012
I would agree with that except for Alain Badiou. Zizek calls him the philosopher of the 21c: “A figure like Plato or Hegel walks among us!”
court168627 - January 6, 2012
A former co-worker of mine, in a discussion with me and another co-worker who double majored in philosophy and mathematics, “Locke and Kant were arrogant morons.” That still makes us laugh over a decade later.

Hollywood Joe - January 6, 2012
the dodgers do have one of those fields – basically it is just an infield for all kinds of drills
if you see the 4 diamonds in the top center left, the diamond facing towards us is a mini
Hollywood Joe - January 6, 2012
There appears to be an even smaller corner on the left side, but it’s not a proper infield like the one on ten right. Maybe it’s just a bit of spare green lawn for visitors to walk around – I seem to remember that from when I was there in 2009.
berkowit28 - January 6, 2012
Discussed below, I see now. OK.
berkowit28 - January 6, 2012
That’s on the White Sox side. Might just be for baserunning, and small quick one-on-one instruction.
And for the players kids.
On the Dodgers side, just beyond the building beyond the left field wall, there is a similar little private area where the Dodgers’ kids play and where Maury Wills does sliding and bunting drills.

Other than just Rizzo being blocked by Alonso. You’d think they could have used Rizzo as part of a package to get someone better than Cashner though.

Cashner seems like an excellent get for them.
meercatjohn - January 6, 2012
I guess if he ends up as a starter. The arm trouble and possibly being stuck in the bullpen is troubling, but then again, the Pads make relievers into deadline gold.

Hollywood Joe - January 6, 2012
The problem with me saying that is that if the skies open up, a miracle occurs, and the Dodgers sign Fielder, I’ll be derided as the naysaying asshole. But if the 999,999 out of a million odds are right and the Dodgers don’t sign him, no one will care that I called him delusional. Musically interesting? Probably not, but I find the aforementioned Muse, Arctic Monkeys, the Wombats, and Silversun Pickups to be a lot of fun

I hear Silversun Pickups on the radio occasionally and they might be the only exception to my claim. I have enjoyed every song I’ve heard by them.
court168627 - January 6, 2012

Josie Becker - January 6, 2012
My feelings about rock and roll can be summed up this way:
Somewhere along the way, somebody decided that melody, harmony, and lush orchestrations were a bad thing. This was a mistake.
There are some bands that still think The Beach Boys were the greatest rock band of all time and make music influenced by them. I like these bands.
Humma Kavula - January 6, 2012
I love the Beach Boys, but I totally disagree with you. After punk, lush orchestrations really are a bad idea in rock music IMHO.
court168627 - January 6, 2012
Most people disagree with me, as you can tell just by listening to the radio. That’s okay with me.
I see the value in a garage band sound; it sets an equal playing field in music. A kid who listens to that says, “Well, hell, I can make that sound in my garage, too.”
But I like a big, overproduced record. I like big harmonies and catchy tunes you can’t get out of your head.
In short, I like music that is designed to make people happy.
Humma Kavula - January 6, 2012
hahaha.
i say this without a hint of sarcasm. generally speaking, i fucking hate music designed to make people happy.
court168627 - January 6, 2012

Josie Becker - January 6, 2012
Of course! Just north of where I live now. Hawthorne represent.
Humma Kavula - January 6, 2012

Just heard on a radio news update that Floyd Mayweather’s jail time was delayed to start on June 1, clearing the way to fight on May 5.
Pacquiao back on?
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
As much as I’d like to see Mayweather fight Pacquaio, I’d rather see Mayweather be in jail for what he did.
fbihop - January 6, 2012
I just read this…. Arum was suppose to be flying to Phillipines Sunday to present the 4 options to Manny. Lets face it, the 4 options suck IMO. Actually any option that isnt Mayweather sucks so hopefully this fight becomes reality…Arum said it was because Floyd was going to jail, but if Manny doesnt fight Floyd next, he cant fight him end on 2012 either, which means we’d have to wait a whole nother year, fuck all that, make that money guys, DO IT!!!

Jim Rome leaving ESPN and heading to CBS Sports Network.
Apparently there is such thing as a CBS Sports Network.
fbihop - January 6, 2012
“Steve! Steve, have you seen this? ESPN has a website.”
“Yeah so.”
“Should we have a website? We broadcast college sports every now and again. We could get Jim Rome, he’s good”
I like this skit because the punchline is Jim Rome is terrible and would only be hired by manatees.

Josie Becker - January 6, 2012
@ESPNBook says that ESPN had been jerking Rome around. Including this:
fbihop - January 6, 2012
haha
nolander - January 6, 2012
So wait, there's a CBS Sports Network as well as this new NBC Sports Network
Do they all not realize its not 1996 anymore, ESPN has already established themselves as the WWL in sports. It’s all over!
That is if you believe ESPN.
Champ Kind - January 6, 2012
well ESPN has thrown down some Disney money to get the rights to just about every major sport save hockey. So NBC took hockey and soccer and made a network.
And CBS was like, that’s awesome, we’ll build a network on the model of the Big 10 network and show C games nobody else wants. And everyone was like, why?
Josie Becker - January 6, 2012
Ironically, that's how ESPN started
By airing the scraps left over from the Big Boys table, of course now that 24 hour sports exists on countless channels, I’m not sure what CBS hopes to gain from this. What excactly is their business model?
Champ Kind - January 6, 2012

Champ Kind - January 6, 2012
There's my business model!
Ivdown - January 6, 2012
I understand the Big10/Pac-12/Longhorn Network. That’s just trying to make nat’l broadcast revenue off of games that would have been on local sports channels or worse, webcast. But why CBS wants to buy games from that same pool…
Josie Becker - January 6, 2012
Because they had a lot of money

but now have another solid pitching prospect who is not really a prospect because he served his MLB time on the DL last year. He was the answer to the question, who was a big time college relief pitcher ala Reed who transitioned into a starter. He won a rotation spot in 2011 but like Ruddy was never able to pitch. Orioles
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
ooo, Cable opens up a world of possibilities....running out of steam, need help on blanks
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim – Syfy – You can rebrand all you want, we know who you are
Oakland Athletics – FX – turned low budget affairs into mild success
Texas Rangers –
Seattle Mariners – USA Network – remember USA? You used to watch wrestling on it.
Chicago White Sox –
Cleveland Indians – AMC – their hits are mild, but the movies are fun to watch over and over.
Kansas City Royals – G4 – A bunch of kids playing video games, maybe it’ll come to something
Minnesota Twins –
Detroit Tigers -
Boston Red Sox – ABC – Solid and well run, but will go experimental. Haven’t produced a hit lately though.
New York Yankees – CBS – Everything they do is #1, but no one really likes them.
Toronto Blue Jays -
Baltimore Orioles -
Tampa Bay Rays – CW – they’re probably doing some interesting things, but nobody is watching
Chicago Cubs -
St. Louis Cardinals –
Milwaukee Brewers –
Pittsburgh Pirates – History Channel – remember that time when that thing happened?
Houston Astros –
Cincinnati Reds –
San Diego Padres – Nickelodeon – Nick is kids!
Arizona Diamondbacks –
Los Angeles Dodgers – NBC – Once great, now struggling to find fan base again. And a hit.
San Francisco Giants – TV Land – All the vets, and they have that one hit
Colorado Rockies – ABC Family – guilty pleasure, but still shows 700 club
Atlanta Braves – TBS – Duh
Washington Nationals – C-Span
New York Mets – TNT – Another cop drama? Just tell me when the Knicks are on.
Philadelphia Phillies – No real history before 1990, but recent big hits have made it a major player.
Florida Marlins -
Josie Becker - January 6, 2012
Cubs are Food Network: always fun to watch, especially at Wrigley Field, but usually a second or third option.
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
You have USA wrong. USA is the top-rated cable station. Which team best fits this description: “They have more fans than anybody else, but no one you know.”
Humma Kavula - January 6, 2012
Maybe the Cardinals? Rangers?
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
Yeah, I was thinking Rangers.
Humma Kavula - January 6, 2012
“The best shows on tv no one knows about”
Ivdown - January 6, 2012
That’s the Rangers! “Oh shit, they’re in the World Series again? Huh.”
Humma Kavula - January 6, 2012
It fits well
What network or channel should the Cardinals be?
Ivdown - January 6, 2012
Fox News
They make big splashes, they get big ratings, but I’m not interested and neither are you. But their big time in the midwest.
Champ Kind - January 6, 2012
This is great.
Tommy Blackjack - January 6, 2012 via iPhone app
No way do the Indians get AMC
Breaking Bad? Mad Men? 1st Season of Walking Dead. I don’t recall seeing anyone on the Tribe’s recent roster that can stand up to Mr. Don Draper. AMC produces quality TV shows.
Champ Kind - January 6, 2012
Major League is about the Indians. They get whatever they want!
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
Yeah, that seems to be the Rays to me.
Humma Kavula - January 6, 2012
I think AMC fits Josie's description of the Phillies
Relatively new success, before that they were just old B&W movies, but lately they have been acquiring quite the team of stars.
Champ Kind - January 6, 2012
How come they rarely show movies anymore on American Movie Classics? Same reason there isnt music videos on MTV? wtf is going on with TV these days….. Next im be watching Monday Night Football on the Playboy channel.

uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
Astros – O Network, since they are switching leagues next year
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
Cardinals – Comedy Central. There are reasons to watch, but if you watch too much of it, it starts seeming like the same shit over and over.
Humma Kavula - January 6, 2012
The Brewers are the Discovery Channel. It’s cool to say that you like them, but they’re actually kind of shallow.
Humma Kavula - January 6, 2012
Giants = Cartoon Network.

Champ Kind - January 6, 2012
They should put sports on Showtime or the movie channel… worst premium channels IMO. I mean, if you’re into their shows I guess you’d disagree, but im not, and IMO they have the worst dam selection of movies.
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012

bhsportsguy - January 6, 2012
You meant to reply above, huh?
Yeah, i thought about the underage bit, too.
Taylor Maricle - January 6, 2012
im sure to no surprise, im surprised how many of you want to go to ST games. Curious of the reason…. just a pure love of baseball that it doesnt matter if you watch meaningless games and players that wont make the team for half the game? Or to get pictures and authographs n stuff?
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
I normally don't care much at all.
But i happen to be on spring break with nothing better to do.
Autographs are cool though.
Taylor Maricle - January 6, 2012
right, thats what im thinking, would be cool if you can go for Spring Break, drink the whole time, meet some players and get pictures, etc. Is that Lake Havisu or whatever close by?
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
It's not about the drinking, though.
By then i’ll have just left 10 weeks of college.
Taylor Maricle - January 6, 2012
You should go to a large body of water somewhere for spring break if you will be 10 weeks into college.
BFDC - January 6, 2012
I go for many reasons
I love the facilities
I get to visit K3vo
It makes for a nice vacation
I get to spend time away with Maddz
I get to satisfy my passion for scouting
I get to watch major league baseball players act like big kids and remember they have personalities as well as wOBAs
It’s dirt cheap to go to games
Getting closer to major league players and personnel than at any other possible situation
but mostly, because it means that MF BASEBALL IS BACK
G.Scott - January 6, 2012
TSBG
meercatjohn - January 6, 2012
who is K3vo? and yeah solid reasons man….. how much is beer though, just curious… and is there areas you could tailgate, drink your own drinks, etc?
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
You can carry your own gun and shoot beer bottles in the parking lot.
meercatjohn - January 6, 2012
cheaper than here, not as cheap as the midwest. $12-14 pitchers or so at the places i remember.
G.Scott - January 6, 2012
and you can get beer sold to you at the stadium without leaving your seat.
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
Very relaxing atmosphere and you can get your fill of baseball in many forms. You can watch everyone in major league camp go through a full workout all from a viewing distance of no more than at a standard little league game. You can get autographs from the players if you are into that or if you have kids (or your kids can simply see their favorite players up close).
You can walk around the whole complex and watch all the minor leaguers either work out or play games, many times sitting next to some of them while you watch. As you are walking the complex, you might run into Tommy Lasorda, pass Ken Landreaux, say hi to Mike Davis, or talk for five minutes with Maury Wills.
Then, if that wasn’t enough, you get to watch nine innings of baseball under the sun, seeing many of the players you know and many of the players you don’t have a chance to see if you don’t live near Albuquerque or Chattanooga.
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012
Underage = driver :)
Eric Stephen - January 6, 2012

or you’re gonna call the cops??
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
Sure
no seriously, I would not want to be put in a position where I would be in any way responsible for that type of behavior. The underage person might get a slap on the wrist, the one who should know better could get in a lot more trouble.
bhsportsguy - January 6, 2012
Right I get you, I understand… Are the laws on it as strict in AZ as they are here?
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
21 is a federal drinking age, so yes.
G.Scott - January 6, 2012
I think they mean the penalties for defying said laws.
Taylor Maricle - January 6, 2012
yeah IO mean the penatly… or bhs getting caught with a drinking minor, etc.
uschris0304 - January 6, 2012
ahh, IDK.

Pro-rated for 12 months
if we just go by her series money that’s slightly around 50K per episode. That sounds about right for a first year run of a 30 min sitcom for an unestablished lead actress.
Probably doesn’t include movies or other sources of income that change from year to year.
