After a thorough review of the offseason moves of the other four teams in the National League West, we turn our investigation inward, looking at our very own Los Angeles Dodgers.
In case you missed the rest of the NL West, here are offseason reviews of Arizona, San Francisco, Colorado, and San Diego.
| Los Angeles Dodgers | |
| 2011 Record: | 82-79 |
| Division Finish: |
Third place, 11½ GB |
| 2012 Opening Day: | Apr 5 at Petco Park in San Diego |

1) Did the season-ending ACL injury to Victor Martinez of the Detroit Tigers cost the Dodgers Prince Fielder?
Yes.
2) If the Dodgers had all this money to sign Prince Fielder, shouldn't they have at least made a formal offer to Hiroki Kuroda, who signed for one year, $10 million with the New York Yankees?
Yes.
3) Will Clayton Kershaw in 2012 become the second Dodgers pitcher ever to win back-to-back Cy Young Awards, joining Sandy Koufax?
Yes.
4) Will Dee Gordon steal at least 60 bases for the Dodgers in 2012?
Yes.
5) Did you mail in this final question and answer session of the week?
Yes.

I do think Jerry Sands has a legitimate chance to make the opening day roster, and if he does it would be as the primary left fielder, as the club wants him to play every day. However, for that same reason I believe Sands will ultimately begin the season in Triple A Albuquerque unless he absolutely dominates during spring training.
The Dodgers do need power of the bench, which is why I picked Fields to make the opening day roster, but I could see Trent Oeltjen ending up with that final bench spot too. But the players haven't even reported to spring training yet; there will be plenty of time for this battle to play itself out.
Barring injury, there is only one bullpen spot open, with the out-of-options Blake Hawksworth fighting it out with Josh Lindblom and several non-roster invitees.

Hopefully Pederson and Baldwin can bring a 2nd/3rd baseman when we need it.

“could play center” is a statement of skill, not of future availability. Kemp will be a corner OF by the end of that contract, probably by 2015 when we sign McCutchen (☺) but Kemp being here that long does mean that all those fancy CF prospects we have have to be able to hit like corner OF guys to be able to make it.
G.Scott - February 10, 2012
or
we could trade them
Maddz - February 10, 2012
or they do nothing as they move up the ladder and it all becomes moot. Counting on Pioneer league hitters seems so premature.

Trayvon will still be a top Five prospect in the Mariner system
meercatjohn - February 10, 2012
No way.
kinbote - February 10, 2012
They have a good system and he won’t even sniff the top ten.
kinbote - February 10, 2012
HQ has him 4th a head of Franklin. They are bullish then most but not top 10 seems quite a stretch. Of course that was before Montero. Maybe 7th / 8th. Easy top 10.
meercatjohn - February 10, 2012
They can win the most Baseball HQ Championships Won title. Trayvon’s going nowhere
G.Scott - February 10, 2012
I checked Fangraphs and Baseball America.
kinbote - February 10, 2012
Seems like the four maybes (perhaps not Martin) will be MLB relievers at worst.

Well okay
Actually since I started paying attention to our prospects more, which was this last year.
DodgerofTrolleys - February 10, 2012
I still feel really strongly that Chris Reed has the stuff and mechanics to become a great major league pitcher. He may at some point transition back into relief, but it won’t be because he has to be a reliever.
G.Scott - February 10, 2012
I agree with you completely.
DodgerofTrolleys - February 10, 2012
Overrated/Underated
Overrated: Ethan Martin
Underrated: Silverio
silverwidow - February 10, 2012
Ethan Martin is pretty well rated.
G.Scott - February 10, 2012
I don’t buy that he’s the best reliever in the system. And that’s his realistic role.
silverwidow - February 10, 2012

I don’t know what he’s rated these days, but I’m very bearish
Michael White - February 10, 2012

Ivdown - February 10, 2012
In case there was any concern about how average Dodger fans feel about our system, in the poll, 60% say ZLee is the top prospect, 35% say Eovaldi and only 1% picked Webby.

cod
its funny how everyone HATED treyarch games before black ops and now it seems like alot of the people I know prefer black ops to mw3 by a wide margin..
hee came hee seop'd he choi'd - February 10, 2012
I'm conflicted
I liked Black OPS, but knew MW2 and MW were both better, but now MW3 didn’t show me a ton (except single player was AMAZING) with their online.
Ivdown - February 10, 2012
mw mp
I never fell for it because it always seemed like it was rich get richer and was a very hard to have fun in matches were dudes were going like 75-1 and dropping nukes on everyone. Black ops seemed way more balanced.
hee came hee seop'd he choi'd - February 10, 2012
I didn't even enjoy the couple levels I played of Black Ops, but I never played competetive multiplayer
the series died with MW2 in my mind.
nolander - February 10, 2012
As in
You loved that one the most or you thought that one killed the series?
Ivdown - February 10, 2012
I still liked the single player, but the multiplayer was such a dissapointment
I just moved on. Didn’t even bother with Black Ops multiplayer. MW1 is in my top 2 for this entire generation though, so its a hard standard to live up to. Still want to play MW3 for single player, but I’m waiting till it goes on sale in a year or so(screw you activision). I would be more interested if they wheren’t just shoving the same game out there every darn year.
nolander - February 10, 2012
I get you. I’m not getting the next COD most likely, i’ve only played 17 hours of MW3, when I have 10 days on MW2, 2 days on black ops, and 8 days on COD 4.
As far as the single player though, if there are any blockbusters left you should try renting it just for that; the single player on MW3 was top 3 of any game I’ve ever played.
Ivdown - February 10, 2012
I started the series on PC
and I will end it on PC. If I can get a game on PC I choose it over consoles every time. Its as much about future compatibility then anything else.
nolander - February 10, 2012
I got Black Ops and MW3 for Christmas, and I don’t think I’ve even taken MW3 out of the packaging.
G.Scott - February 10, 2012
im a bf3 fan
its so much more fun if you ask me. way more team oriented. I was 1st place on a game I played last night and only went 5-5 in terms of k/d.
hee came hee seop'd he choi'd - February 10, 2012
Oh absolutely
I love Battlefield 3, such a fun game. If I could take the game play from Modern Warfare 3 and the stuff you can do and the maps from Battlefield 3 i’d be in game heaven.
Yeah, its all about winning in battlefield, not K/D ratio, though I still want a good one, haha. Im the type of guy who will try and destroy tanks and junk even though I’ll get killed 3 times while doing it.
Ivdown - February 10, 2012
BF is more fun when you’re playing with friends because its much moer team based. COD is always fun even if you’re playing on your own
DannyDodger - February 10, 2012
Yeah I know what you mean
My cousin and I play and it’s way more fun when it’s him and I rather than just me, or because the servers are just as messed up as CODs when it’s me VS him.
Ivdown - February 10, 2012
Question
If Fields has a serious shot at making the team, does he also have a legitimate shot at unseating Uribe at 3b?
kinbote - February 10, 2012
I doubt it, I’d think Hairston would play 3rd if Uribe gets hurt. I don’t think Fields has a shot at making the team. He’s depth insurance. He might make the team but only if injuries take place. JMO

Redding
Webster
Martin
MaGill
Aaron Miller
is a rough guess
meercatjohn - February 10, 2012
I completely forgot about Miller
Yesterday I had:
Withrow
Webster
E Martin (if you think none of the LoA guys will make it)
Redding

He’s been in AA 2 1/2 years I guess he could go for three.

G.Scott - February 10, 2012
wow I forgot how late it was that they reported
i know some of the better prospects will be there earlier, but there probably won’t be much going on in terms of the minor league side then if I came the weekend of March 10th
Brandon Lennox - February 10, 2012
No, they started around the 4th weekend of February last year – Feb. 26 – (you must have meant that) with major league games starting March 31. Everything this year seems is a good week or more later, wit ST games starting March 5 (for Dodgers) and MLB games April 5.

berkowit28 - February 10, 2012
For reference
Last year, Dodgers pitchers and catchers reported to big league camp at Camelback Ranch on February 16 and the first P&C workout was February 17.
The reporting date for minor league pitchers and catchers at CBR was March 3, with their first workout on March 5.
First major league spring training game was February 26, and the first minor league game was March 18.

G.Scott - February 10, 2012
Mariners pitchers and catchers are reporting tomorrow, because they open their regular season early against the A’s in Japan. The A’s, however, are not reporting earlier; their P&Cs are reporting next Saturday, along with 8 other teams.

Brilliant. Michael Heisley who instructed his general manager to draft Hasheem Thabeet even though the GM wanted to draft Tyreke Evans.
I feel confident in saying you would hate Heisley way more than you hated Frank.

G.Scott - February 10, 2012
Right. He’s rich but doesn’t want to spend on the team (I’ll admit, his past two years suggest that’s changing) and he meddles in basketball affairs he should leave to the GM (like the Thabeet debacle.) And he’s been trying to sell the Grizzlies for years.
Michael White - February 10, 2012
And he's on record as saying local guys should own teams if possible
which makes sense for a Minnesota guy who owns a Memphis team to want to be an LA team.

Anyone want to enlighten me on the DOJ interpretation related to on-line gambling? Been hearing on-line poker could make a return to the US along with other means of gambling.
meercatjohn - February 10, 2012
Some believe
that the current status is that there is an opening for states to conduct lotteries online. Others see it as an opening for states to finance and operate their own online poker but that is yet undetermined. One thing is sure, there is no opening for legal online gambling on sports, that remains the one form specifically outlawed under current U.S. law (though DOJ maintains that the Wire Act prohibits all forms of online gambling).
bhsportsguy - February 10, 2012
Yeah, I heard that there is an opening for a multi-state compact like the Powerball or Megamillions lotteries, only with online poker.

is Manny cutting off Damon’s throw. It’s like the Law of Diminishing Returns doesn’t apply when I watch that clip over and over again. The play is ridiculous in and of itself, but Manny exerted more effort on that blooper than he ever did on any play in the field in his entire career.

Bryce Harper

silverwidow - February 10, 2012
So was Reggie Bush
mleadman - February 10, 2012
Was there ever a serious possibility that he wouldn’t turn pro, though?
Just Jake - February 10, 2012
Nope, just a hypothetical.
silverwidow - February 10, 2012
Considering he dropped out of high school, got his GED and enrolled in a JC in order to better prepare him for the pro-game, I’m surprised he even identified a 4 year college at all.
Michael White - February 10, 2012
perhaps that was the school he would have transfered to after his JC experience
nolander - February 10, 2012
He only did the JC thing because he was too young to be drafted. He would have done that if rules allowed it.
Michael White - February 10, 2012
BTW
I am guessing the USC he was going to go to was the one in South Carolina.
bhsportsguy - February 10, 2012
Right
meercatjohn - February 10, 2012
probably true
nolander - February 10, 2012
I’m surprised USC couldn’t match the Nationals’ signing bonus.

Quick straw poll, setting up the TBLA fantasy league
do people prefer head to head or rotisserie. I’m leaning toward rotisserie
Josie Becker - February 10, 2012
also, live draft or autodraft? I’ve never commissioned a league before
Josie Becker - February 10, 2012
it has to be live
nolander - February 10, 2012
or it’s Memorex
mleadman - February 10, 2012
I prefer points to roto, but both are better than H2H. And live drafts are much more fun.
Nolij - February 10, 2012
I also vote for live draft.
fbihop - February 10, 2012
While I won't be participating
1) I prefer head to head. It’s less fair but more fun.
2) Autodraft blows. Live drafts are the way to go.
Michael White - February 10, 2012
I figured most people would have this as their second league, roto would make it okay to miss days here and there
Josie Becker - February 10, 2012
I’m not participating either but I agree with this completely. Also, H2H often keeps people paying attention to the league more than roto does.
VegasBlues - February 10, 2012
I've only done head to head but I enjoyed it
nolander - February 10, 2012
I also enjoy head to head with live draft, and would be interested in playing.
G.Scott - February 10, 2012
Head to head I think
also live draft
Ivdown - February 10, 2012
I believe we’ve reached consensus. Now just need a date for the draft
Josie Becker - February 10, 2012
Would a saturday or sunday be best?
Ivdown - February 10, 2012
tomorrow
nolander - February 10, 2012
As the commisioner of my Yahoo baseball and football leagues, my advice on picking the draft time is a Wednesday or Thursday night, give people plenty of notice (so they can plan around it) and don’t change the draft time unless it’s overwhelmingly clear the day doesn’t work. Otherwise, you’ll just drive yourself crazy.
Michael White - February 10, 2012
yes rotisserie
with sabr’y stats
Joey Joe - February 10, 2012
SABR stats just aren’t nearly as fun in fantasy
G.Scott - February 10, 2012
We have BA/OBP/SLG in mine. The addition of OBP and SLG are the only outside the box categories though. No FIP or any of that shit.
Michael White - February 10, 2012
net steals, whip
i think work well.
i used holds last year too even though holds is kinda bogus when it comes to smart stats
Joey Joe - February 10, 2012
WHIP is a criteria as well. Interestingly, it’s been there since my first league. I think it’s a standard in Yahoo Leagues.
Net steals is a good idea. I’ll look into that.
Michael White - February 10, 2012
whip is def standard
nolander - February 10, 2012
couldn't we just do away with BA?
I mean this is a TBLA league
nolander - February 10, 2012
i dont like head to head because its too much effort…
with rotisserie, you just set your lineup and starters and you can just check how your stats are doing every couple weeks or so.
Joey Joe - February 10, 2012
*shrug*
never done anything other then head to head. Less work sounds like a good thing.
nolander - February 10, 2012
I set my lineup at the beginning of the week for head to head anyway. I don’t like to “tinker” so I ride out the week and don’t overreact to a hot game by a bench guy. I really only need to check it on Sundays and Wednesdays (to insure the starter pitchers are right.)
Michael White - February 10, 2012

yeah, pretty much it – if you got a skillet or a baking dish that is probably easier to get out. Use a lasagna pan for a square one
make sure the pan is well oiled
What gives deep dish it’s crisp texture is that the surface of the dough actually fries against the hot sides and bottom of the pan

Oakland Alameda County Arena opened in 1966, the current MSG opened in 1968. The Great Western Forum opened in 1967, for comparison’s sake.
Josie Becker - February 10, 2012
I don’t believe the “Great Western” forum opened in that year. However, I do believe that was the first corporate sponsorship of an arena when it happened (in 1988 if you believe Wikipedia).
KellyStephen - February 10, 2012
But it is not the longest continuous home arena
The Warriors played in some other places during the last 45 years too. The Knicks have been playing in that version of the Garden during that whole run.

Fisher needs to join the coaching staff and give it up already, he is D O N E, DONE!
uschris0304 - February 10, 2012
Hes not done but he shouldn't be playing as much as they play him
he can still get hot with shooting and can still play D but he is old and erratic to be sure
underdog - February 10, 2012
Even when Fish was young, he was below average on defense
At this point in time, he’s by far the worst pick and roll defender in the league, and one of the worst in the past 20 years. He’s patented the Flail My Arms On The High Screen So The Refs Call Illegal Screen move, but they’re not blowing their whistles anymore and the opposing PG is now ten feet past Fish.
The Dude Abides - February 10, 2012
Turn in
your Laker card at the door, Fisher gets to go on his terms not anyone else.
bhsportsguy - February 10, 2012
Look, I love Fisher as much as anyone and appreciate what he has done for this franchise.I dont talk shit about him and rag on him like alot of other Laker fans do now. That said, pro sports is a what have you done for me lately business, and winning is the business.
uschris0304 - February 10, 2012
There is no point to this discussion
he isn’t retiring and the Lakers still have his salary on the books so they can’t cut him.
As UD said above, his playing time would go down if they had someone better to play but they don’t.
Be logical.
bhsportsguy - February 10, 2012
sorry man, just frustrated.
uschris0304 - February 10, 2012
See, there FIsh goes…. gotta let players know when they’re fuckin up, then they respond. He knows.
uschris0304 - February 10, 2012
But im mostly just frustrated and tired of seeing Fisher get burned on a daily basis. When his shot isnt falling, it just adds to my frustration, cuz he sure as hell aint stopping anybody. I agree with Craig he probably has enough to come of the bench, so Lakers need to make that a reality atleast, which I do believe they will. Hopefully sooner then later.
uschris0304 - February 10, 2012
Derek Fisher
never had quickness as an asset and back when he had his feet and leg problems 7-8 years ago, it got worst. The Lakers have always relied on team defense to combat quick outside guards.
The good thing is that generally, over a 7 game series, small quick guards alone have not shown that they can win a playoff series. Certainly they are beneficial but you can exploit them in other areas.
Over the regular season, it becomes more difficult because of the timing of games.
bhsportsguy - February 10, 2012
Don’t buy this argument. Time and again athletes have proven unable to judge when they are no longer physically capable of contributing the way they did in the past.
Josie Becker - February 10, 2012
Whose arguing this part
he’s signed a three year deal in 2010 so he is still on the books until the end of next season. He isn’t going to go now or anytime soon.
bhsportsguy - February 10, 2012
JEremy Lin is great fun to watch, can't help to admire even against my Lakers
but tell me, that play near the end, where he almost fell and made a move to lay it up, that the announcers were drooling over, he traveled so obviously I was kind of stunned no one said anything. I guess they don’t want to criticize him much right now. Anyway, other than that, pretty great stuff from him.
Lakers still in this game but seems like Matt Barnes is about the only go playing with intensity.
