Two years ago the Dodgers signed a good fielding, right-hand hitting utility infielder with a career 83 OPS+ to a guaranteed two-year contract for his age 36 and 37 seasons, for what many observers, including this one, considered a bit too much money and a year more than necessary. But Jamey Carroll silenced his critics by being a league average hitter while accruing far more playing time for the Dodgers than most imagined.
Carroll has moved on to Minnesota, so enter Jerry Hairston, Jr., who begins his Dodgers career with similar baseball skill credentials (86 OPS+, not quite as good an infielder, but a better outfielder, right-handed), with an equal-length, but richer contract (two years, $6M), and while also viewing his age-35 season in the rear-view mirror.
| 2012 Dodgers Player Profiles |
| This continues our series of 2012 player profiles, where we will analyze one player per day, between now and the end of spring training. This is also the spot for our community projections, so be sure to give us your predictions for each player for this season in the comments section. |
Carrying a lot of gloves in one's baseball bag, and being able to wield them decently can be a profitable exercise, as Hairston has parlayed those skills - he has appeared at every position except pitcher and catcher, and at least 436 innings at all of those spots except first base - into a 14-year career encompassing nearly 4500 plate appearances, and about $15 million in career major-league earnings.
As an offensive player, Hairston's career breaks up into three segments:
| Years | 1998-2005 | 2006-2007 | 2008-2011 |
| Ages | 22-29 | 30-31 | 32-35 |
| OPS+ | 87 | 38 | 96 |
Perhaps wisdom of age allowed him to figure something out about his swing and turn him into a league-average hitter, but one might think that betting on that continuing at age 36, and for two seasons, may not be the wisest course of action.
Hairston hails from a multi-generational baseball family. His brother Scott Hairston will open his ninth MLB season this spring in his second year with the New York Mets. They are the sons of Jerry Hairston, longtime White Sox pinch-hitter / outfielder, and nephews of John Hairston, a cup of coffee Chicago Cub of the ill-fated 1969 season. Going back another generation, the father of the elder Jerry Hairston, Sam Hairston, finished his major league career with a whopping .400 / .571 / .600 batting line!
Because Jerry debuted before his brother Scott, he became the first third-generation African-American major-league baseball player.
The Dodgers are Hairston's eighth team. The journeyman has called every division of the major home except for the AL Central.
Ring in a box: he's got one. Hairston was a deadline day acquisition of the 2009 New York Yankees, and has appeared in more playoff series than Matt Kemp despite 2009 being his first post-season appearance, having returned to playoff action last season with the Milwaukee Brewers.
(Sponsored by Ripley's Believe It Or Not) For his age 36 and 37 seasons, Hairston will earn $6 million guaranteed, or about $1.9 million more than any two-year span in his career. $2.25 million of that backloaded deal is due in 2012.

Hairston would appear to be cast in the bench/utility player role for the Dodgers. If he accrues a large number of at-bats in 2012, that would probably indicate that things went south for one of more of Juan Uribe, Mark Ellis, or Dee Gordon. (It is unclear to me if the Dodgers would be willing to go with Hairston as an everyday SS, but the other choices would seem to be Uribe or Justin Sellers, so take your pick.)
If Pecota's playing time projection for Hairston is right, especially with a TSL like that, the soft flesh of my wrists will look mighty tempting to my kitchen knives. Of course they list his "comparables" as "Art Howe, Mike Lowell, (four-time batting champion) Bill Madlock", so take that for what it is worth.
Other than that, the projections generally are in line with my expectations, so I will guess that Hairston bats .251 / .329 / .368 while scrapping up 288 plate appearances.
What is your guess for Hairston in 2012? Be sure to guess BA/OBP/SLG, and anything else you wish to guess.
Thanks to baseball-reference.com and fangraphs.com for the statistics.

.250/.315/.350
Hairston’s career BABIP is a low .282, and he is even worse the last three years at .272 so his .301 last year is probably a fluke. Reduce his ISO a bit since he’s leaving a hitter friendly park for Dodger Stadium and general aging, and you get the kind of performance you’d expect from a spare infielder.
regfairfield - February 15, 2012
This will also be the best offensive performance we get from a non-Loney infielder.

On the bright side there’s a real good chance this won’t be the worst hitting infield in recent memory.

What do you want me to do when Jerry Hairston is one of the better hitters in the infield? Not research the worst infields of the last 50 years?

I would never kill your fun
Tommy Blackjack - February 15, 2012 via iPhone app
You’re the best.
If anyone cares there’s no way we beat out the 2003 Pirates unless “first baseman Adam Kennedy” becomes a regular thing.

It kills me to say this
Who would be worse, Kennedy now or Phillips in 05?
Ivdown - February 15, 2012
Sweeney in 2008.
kinbote - February 15, 2012
cut my wrists now
Let’s see:
2007: Saenz – 92 G .191/.295/.345
2008: Sweeney – 98 G .130/.250/.163
2009: Loretta – 107 G .232/.309/.276
2010: Garrett Anderson – 80 G .181/.204/.286
2011: Aaron Miles/Dioner Navarro – 136 G .275/.314/.346 / 64 G .193/.276/.324
I might not even put Miles as a pinch hitting option with how many games he played/started. This team has not had a good (or anywhere near decent) main pinch hitter off the bench since Saenz freaking mashed in 2006 slugging over .530 in 100+ games. We are really paying for that season.
Ivdown - February 15, 2012
Should’ve picked Marcus Thames for last season. God that guy sucked.
court168627 - February 15, 2012
and Gibbons too.
kinbote - February 15, 2012
I went more for the main pinch hitters
2011 had more crappy pinch hitters, though I think Navarro and Miles were the main culprits. But yeah, Gibbons and Thames really made Loretta’s 09 look good.
Ivdown - February 15, 2012
as others have said
Rivera off the bench could be money. I just don’t see it happening.
kinbote - February 15, 2012
I do, I think Sands will get the starting job.
OB12 - February 15, 2012
My main reasoning is that Rivera is pencilled in to a very important RBI spot in the lineup (6th). For better or worse, he is part of our offensive core.

delias man - February 15, 2012
The Dodgers would cut Juan Uribe first over Jerry Hairston. The entire offseason was finding people they could play over Uribe.
Tripon - February 15, 2012
I am bullish on Uribe
delias man - February 15, 2012
I doubt the Dodgers would outright cut either of these players with the amount of time and money left on their contracts.
court168627 - February 15, 2012
If Uribe is putting up similar numbers at the ASB, that he did last year. He will be gone.
OB12 - February 15, 2012

Is it possible that UCLA receives the most admission requests because they are the number one “safe” school?
meercatjohn - February 15, 2012
We have a saying at UCI for a number of years.
“We get the most application requests out of all the UCs because we’re everyone 2nd or 3rd choice.”
Interesting that UCLA took that spot.
Tripon - February 15, 2012
I’m not sure about UCLA acceptance standards, but I think they’re high enough that you probably wouldn’t call it a “safe” school.
My guess as to why it’s #1 in applications: it gets a lot of international and out-of-state applicants. Most major universities on the coasts get a lot of international students, but I think (and this is a hunch) UCLA probably gets more out-of-state applicants because young people just love flocking to Hollywood. Combine that with the fact that it’s the cheaper option of major university in the second most populous city in America.
court168627 - February 15, 2012
That,
and it’s consistently ranked in the top 3 public schools in the entire country.
court168627 - February 15, 2012
It’s the safe school for people that go to Stanford.
It’s the first choice for people that go to UCI.
A nice middle ground.
regfairfield - February 15, 2012
It is, quite possibly, the second-best public university in the world. And being in the best city in the most populous state in the nation makes it pretty appealing.

Oh shaddup. :) I went to both schools (UCLA just for post-grad year of adult ed)
(and UCSB for 1 year before transferring to SF State for its film program).
Let’s not be getting too subjectively snobby here.
underdog - February 15, 2012
we are talking about overall admission here
does SF state offer the same breadth of well ranked programs as UCLA?
nolander - February 15, 2012
Wasn't really sure what we were talking about, frankly. So I just wanted to defend my alma mater generally. ;)
It offers different well-ranked programs than UCLA, but no probably not in the same category. But it does have very well regarded education, cinema, business, MA/MFA programs in creative writing (i couldn’t even get into theirs, it was so competitive) and philosophy, physical therapy (top 20 in nation), and so on. Y’all would be surprised. But yeah, it’s obviously a different environment, more of an urban integrated school than many UCs.
underdog - February 15, 2012
With a huge international student population IIRC.

Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
Not really, no.
Unless you mean in the same way all UC schools are administered by UC regents at Berkeley.
underdog - February 15, 2012
when UCSF opened it was known as
“The Medical Department of the University of California.” Davis grew into a full university, SF is still just the UCs med school. And the UC regents are in Oakland
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
Hastings at least got to keep their name
nolander - February 15, 2012
I honestly don't care as much as it seems but I think you're not quite defining it fairly
UCSF was the 9th separate UC school. From the official site: in 1964, it gained administrative autonomy, becoming the ninth campus in the UC system. In 1970, the UC Board of Regents renamed the campus the University of California, San Francisco in recognition of its diversity of disciplines.
underdog - February 15, 2012
can an 18 year old Californian interested in Engineering or business go there?
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
They can go there, but only to study medicine or health fields. ;)
(Just as I can go to UC Davis, but not to get a creative writing degree. Obviously, Davis, as an example, has far more programs to offer than UCSF though, which is a very specific school unusual to the UC system.)
underdog - February 15, 2012
No, they can’t. Well, unless they Doogie Howsered their way through undergrad already.

UC regents came to town to pick out a location. a real estate developer was touring them. He had hundreds of acres in “Westwood” he was stuck with. They drove to Pasadena, and they were told it is too hot year round here. Drove to PV and saw it was cloudy and windy and he told them every day was like that. they had a train to catch and they hurried to westwood, took a quick look and were like “whatever”

I think they did quite well. Who the hell would want to naviagate all the city streets to get to PV. They are in a perfect spot. JMO

Cal grad giving love to UCLA what the hell is going on here? I’m guessing BS from Cal and now he wants a masters from UCLA.
Phil Gurnee - February 15, 2012
Most of my family went to UCLA and my wife went to USC. I have no ill will toward either of those institutions.
Nolij - February 15, 2012
does your wife have a mercedez or bmw? and your family has either camrys or accords?
uschris0304 - February 15, 2012
No, and… shush, you :)
Nolij - February 15, 2012
he said second best. which personally I think is unfair to UNC, Michigan, and Virginia
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
I said “quite possibly.” It is not a particularly biased statement to say that UCLA is similar academically to UNC, UM or UVA (or Cal for that matter).
Nolij - February 15, 2012
every ranking perennially has ucla and virginia sharing the #2 and #3 slots
court168627 - February 15, 2012 via Android app
right, which is sort of my point. Best is relative, and it’s more accurate to say UCLA is one of the top public universities and leave it at that
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
I think we should get more specific and rank each of the under grad programs.
Phil Gurnee - February 15, 2012
those rankings are harder to pin down
nolander - February 15, 2012
It’s not like US News & World Report ranks them every year or anything.
Nolij - February 15, 2012

nolander - February 15, 2012
because schools that don’t offer masters programs are often awesome at undergrad
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
Small Liberal Arts colleges have done pretty well for themselves.
Nolij - February 15, 2012
most populous means best. since, you know, most units means quality product.
G.Scott - February 15, 2012
Is it cheaper then SC and Stanford too, private schools? or no?
uschris0304 - February 15, 2012
if you are in state its like 1/4 the price
nolander - February 15, 2012
well
it used to be, its still a lot cheaper though but UC tuition has doubled in the last 8 years
nolander - February 15, 2012
and the others have stayed the same?
Phil Gurnee - February 15, 2012
I'm pretty sure they haven't doubled
they aren’t actually affected by the budget issues nearly as strongly as state schools I would imagine.
nolander - February 15, 2012
Josie or BH will clear this up shortly
Phil Gurnee - February 15, 2012
USC IIRC was around 35k 10 years ago, now around 40k
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
looks like USC is 40k a year?
and UC tuition used to be about 8k, now its closer to 15k. I think USC tuition was around 40k 8 years ago.
nolander - February 15, 2012
So a four year grad pays 60 at a UC while 160 at USC. UC folk need to stop whining.
Phil Gurnee - February 15, 2012
ugh.
court168627 - February 15, 2012 via Android app

Josie Becker - February 15, 2012

court168627 - February 15, 2012 via Android app
yeahhhh no
USC probably doesn’t have issues where students can’t get the classes they need because of budget cuts while the tuition is rising
Maddz - February 15, 2012
only 40k?
That’s kind of cheap
Maddz - February 15, 2012
so that may be part of the reason too, its a cheaper good education.
uschris0304 - February 15, 2012

court168627 - February 15, 2012 via Android app
UCLA is a “safe school” for those Californians applying to Stanford, the Ivys, and probably the Claremont colleges.
ishXdavid - February 15, 2012
forgot Oxford and The Sarbonne
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
I don’t know a single Californian who applied to Oxford. I know a kid who went to Cambridge as a high school junior for a summer literature program.
ishXdavid - February 15, 2012
UCLA is probably “better” than Pitzer or Scripps. UCLA has 10x the students of Pomona, CMC and Harvey Mudd. It is not a safety school for those. People who are interested in small liberal arts colleges are not by and large looking at major universities as their safeties.
Nolij - February 15, 2012
My nephew is a freshman at Harvey Mudd. His two top choices were HM and Cal Tech. UCLA was his safety school.
Xeifrank - February 15, 2012

David Young - February 15, 2012
Reseda Blvd is an off-ramp too of course. (Maddz and) I went to middle school in Tarzana, just off Reseda.

The Yankees – won in 1962 and then lost in 1963 and 1964

meercatjohn - February 15, 2012
No, but after all thats happened in the past, now you have a better record after less then 30 games and you’re better now… ok
uschris0304 - February 15, 2012
Dodgers have a storied history but nothing much to show for the last 23 years…
Angels have been Champs and contenders for a long time now (and they have the rally monkey).
Clippers?…Crickets as far as accomplishments
BaldBilly - February 15, 2012
It’s still irrelevant.
The two teams in the NBA finals last year were the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks? How storied are those histories? They had good players and therefore won a lot of basketball games. It’s really that simple.
Michael White - February 15, 2012
Heat…Finals, Banner Hanging
Mavericks…Banner Hanging
Clippers…hopeful
BaldBilly - February 15, 2012
you are forgetting the TWO slamdunk championships in Clipper history.
delias man - February 15, 2012
You’re nitpicking. The Mavericks did not have a banner going into the playoffs and yet somehow still managed to win. Miami (while having a ring in a box) has an equally terrible history until they hit the draft lotto and picked up an established star (sound familiar?)
Michael White - February 15, 2012
Dallas had a Western Conference champs banner,
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
Okay, I don’t think any Clipper fan argue that. But the main point is that you were using the history of the storied Laker franchise to say we can’t say we are as good if not better then the current iteration of the Purple and Gold.
meercatjohn - February 15, 2012
it’s all about corner turning
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012

meercatjohn - February 15, 2012
well lets do it then baby… series is at 1-1 right now… Lets see what moves these teams make between now and March 15 and lets see…. hopefully we do play eachother in the playoffs.
uschris0304 - February 15, 2012
So 30 games was too insignifcant of a sample size for you, but comparing the 2 games head to head is not a problem?
Michael White - February 15, 2012
Look, my honest opinion right now is Clippers do have a better team, especially if they end up landing JR Smith. But Lakers can still do things from now til March 15th, maybe even after, so if Clippers being up 3 games in the loss column after 27 games or so, then cool. But saying you guys have been a pain in our ass? Shit, ya’ll dont even know how to be a pain in the ass yet. Clippers fans can say whatever they want, its cool with me. This isnt the 1st time the Clippers have had their day in the sun, were the better team, only for that shit to get dark real quick.

uschris0304 - February 15, 2012
What does history have to do with the present when one is discussing the current state?
meercatjohn - February 15, 2012
History means NOTHING during the season
As a Lakers fan, I’m glad the Clippers are doing well during a Lakers down-year. I can’t imagine a stronger impetus to improve than having your roommate grab all the headlines, priming itself for a deep playoff run. The Lakers have rarely wallowed in mediocrity for an extended period of time, but now more than ever, the front office has to see that the status quo is unacceptable to the fan base.
All this talk about the Lakers history is great for trivia shows and offseason banter, but it’s akin to Britain and France’s claim to geopolitical relevance because of the Victorian Age and Napoleon.

And I updated with the draft order. I am drafting 14th.
fbihop - February 15, 2012
These are the Dodgers main pinch hitters the last 5 seasons
Let’s see:
2007: Saenz – 92 G .191/.295/.345 65 OPS+
2008: Sweeney – 98 G .130/.250/.163 13 OPS+
2009: Loretta – 107 G .232/.309/.276 59 OPS+
2010: Garrett Anderson – 80 G .181/.204/.286 29 OPS+
2011: Aaron Miles/Dioner Navarro – 136 G .275/.314/.346 84 OPS+ / 64 G .193/.276/.324 67 OPS+
Dioner Navarro was 10th on the team in pinch-hitting PA (11; which was 11 too many) in 2011. Trent Oeltjen was first with 31 PA (.167/.286/.208), but the next two were good as PH (Gwynn, .333/.407/.458 in 27 PA, and Miles .438/.444/.438 in 18 PA).
Ronnie Belliard was second to GA in PH PA in 2010 (45 to 52) and was especially awful: 7 for 41, .171/.222/.220
Loretta had 66 PA as a PH in 2009, but Juan Pierre was awesome in his 51 PA (.326/.396/.419)
Sweeney was everyday Mark in 2008 with 92 PA as a PH, but Delwyn Young was .292/.393/.333 in 58 PA as a pinch hitter.
Saenz had 75 PA as a PH in 2007, but Boom Boom was terrific, hitting .320/.485/.760 with 2 doubles and 3 HR in 33 PA.
Dodgers pinch hitters overall…
2011: 90 sOPS+ (11th in NL)
2010: 72 sOPS+ (16th)
2009: 107 sOPS+ (7th)
2008: 90 sOPS+ (12th)
2007: 123 sOPS+ (5th)
Eric Stephen - February 15, 2012
Oh ok
I guess I should have said main bench/utility player. It’s good to see the pinch hitting wasn’t as bad as I thought, though the last 2 years sucked.

DT Rules!
Ok, I decide to take a peek into the darkside and I checked out the TBLA blog yesterday. To my surprise, I find out that you guys have been talking about me! I thank my few defenders, but I think I need to speak up for myself. I’m tired of the liberal media elite and their gotcha questions! I was not expecting to be questioned about the DT site and was momentarily tongue tied. If I was given enough time to answer, I would have come up with at least 3 or so of the rules: Thank you for not: 1. using profanity 2. making the same point over and over again and 3. um, uh, umm I can’t think of the third one….
I realize this is close rule 5 violation, but I’m posting it anyway

Which reminds me...
I just left a fantasy league because it had too many d-bags in it. One of the guys made the claim that almost all baseball analysis on the internet is BS and that he prefers fun things like “Justin Verlander has a nice moustache; why not draft him?” He then went on to reveal that he has an internship with Bleacher Report this summer and everything just fit so well.

is jeremy lin story closest thing to Kurt Warner since Kurt Warner?
I think it is.
Cut, non-drafted, bench warmer thrust into the spotlight and immediately shines.
I’m just wondering who’s going to play the Mike Martz role…
Joey Joe - February 15, 2012
I saw a tweet today that compared Jeremy Lin to Victor Cruz which makes MUCH more sense than comparing him to Tebow.

I’m just shocked that he’s not a Laker because usually when the team is meh, something like that happens. Instead of trading for the best center in basketball (Wilt, Kareem, Shaq) or getting incredible draft year number one’s in Magic or trading used Fords for Worthy’s, or having the smarts to draft Kobe, it would have not been surprising if Lin had made it to the Lakers and kick started the season in to higher ground.
meercatjohn - February 15, 2012
Almost happened
When Lin went undrafted he had offers from the Lakers and the Warriors, choosing the latter.
ishXdavid - February 15, 2012
I think the corner turned when the league said no to Paul.
meercatjohn - February 15, 2012
Totally agree
The Paul deal would’ve been just another example, such as the ones you provided, of the Lakers being on the lucky side of history. There are a lot of free agent and draft busts that cripple franchises for a decade, and the Lakers have been lucky to have everything magically fall into place. Personally, the NBA nixing the Paul deal was shocking because it was a deal that the Lakers have historically made.

Hollywood Joe - February 15, 2012
Yep
The Lin family was told that the Lakers were planning to select Jeremy with the #58 pick, but then nobody selected Derrick Caracter, and the Lakers took him instead of Lin. Then when Lin tore up the summer league, the Lakers offered him a one-year, non-guaranteed deal at minimum salary, but the Warriors offered him two years, partially guaranteed, and the Lakers declined to match, because they’re loaded at point guard with Steve Blake and Derek Fisher.
The Dude Abides - February 15, 2012
I cannot, not laugh
Kupchak had a good run, but I can’t help but feel Jim Buss stuck his nose in here because he thinks he knows basketball
meercatjohn - February 15, 2012
I also suspect that Kupchak wanted to let Lamar cool off for awhile
But Jim Buss told Mitch to ship Lamar out. I’m also stunned that they re-signed Fisher to a three-year deal, when one year at a higher salary than Miami was offering would have sufficed. They had to know that Phil was leaving soon and the triangle might go away, thus rendering Fisher completely ineffective on offense (he already had been completely ineffective on defense for several years). My guess there is that Mitch was expecting to keep continuity and hire Brian Shaw, and now that Jim Buss insisted on Mike Brown (ugh), we’re stuck with an ancient Fish.
The Dude Abides - February 15, 2012

No way DT can compete with the total quantity of topics discussed on TBLA on any given day.
(Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

I imagine Jon is okay with that

This place is like an addicting reality show that you know you shouldn’t be watching, but you do anyway. DT is more like NPR (or PBS if you want to stay with a TV theme), interesting, informative, and classy

Luckily for them Ka’aihue, Cowgill, and Carter blow chunks
Allen and Barton might blow chunks
Gomes might be done
If they end up with Smith, Gomes / Crisp / Cepedes in the OF
Barton at 1st
Manny at DH
they could be the best last place team in baseball, But still in last place
meercatjohn - February 15, 2012
Kila has very good patience and could still be worth something
Cowgill seems to be a good backup, Carter was a top prospect just 2 years ago so I’d still have some faith.
Allen has very good power, worth giving a shot. Barton has had very good patience and fielding at 1B, so he should definitely be near the top. Gomes is whatever, platoon option possibly.

He’s close, I just have other, worse actors who I like better ahead right now.

Mel Gibson, Steve Zahn, Gary Oldman (though he's really good), Alan Rickman (again, really good)
Ivdown - February 15, 2012
well thats not terrible
Mel Gibson isn’t active enough to count right now. Rickman isn’t in very much stuff. Goldman is in my top 3 probably maybe
nolander - February 15, 2012
I love that you called him Goldman, haha
Yeah I suppose they aren’t bad actors, just not as good as Leo, I just appreciate them so much as actors. It’s not really for their current roles, most of my liking of these actors is for their past roles:
Gibson – Lethal Weapon Movies, Payback, The Patriot, , Ransom, etc…
Oldman – New Batman series, Air Force One, Harry Potter series, etc…
Rickman – Dogma, Harry Potter series, etc…
Zahn – National Security, Daddy Day Care, Joy Ride, etc…
Leo is right behind them though.

I'm reading Chris Jericho's book
Just got to the part where he storms into Vince McMahon’s office and tells him to go fuck himself. Jericho was pissed cause he heard rumors that Vince was going to take the world title off him after like a week. So he’s all expecting to get shit canned after his tirade, but instead Vince gets off on it and tells him that’s the attitude he needs to see in his champ.

I was thinking about how amazingly charasmatic the Rock is and was
I honestly haven’t seen any other wrestler with the ability to do what he does, and be liked by just about everyone. Hell, even if you were a fan of heels and rooted against the Rock, I don’t think it would be easy to not like him.

In a movie do you want to be an extra or supporting actor? You want to be the lead actor, which is what being the champion would be.
Ivdown - February 15, 2012
well yeah, but he still was a popular wrestler at the time, plus doesnt the title switch hands quite often, or no?
uschris0304 - February 15, 2012
If you want the title to have credibility you want a wrestler to look strong and keep it for a while, like months if possible. If someone is losing the heavyweight title a week after they win it, they really look bad.
Alberto Del Rio won the title twice in 2011, and the way he did it (beating someone after they already did a match and getting a finisher from someone else after) wasn’t strong, and then he lost the title pretty easily so he looked really weak. Now he’s injured but even if he wasn’t he wouldn’t be getting a lot of attention right now.
Ivdown - February 15, 2012
That got me to think about boxing…I would probably read a book about Michael Moorer (who I thought lost to Holyfield when I was in high school)

I’ll give you an update when he’s scheduled.

i went to SD for Bash at The beach 98? for the big main event tag match of Karl Malone/Lex Luger vs. Hogan and Rodman. It was electric.
delias man - February 15, 2012
My dad took me to see wrestling twice I believe…. once was Hogan vs Macho King Randy Savage, the other I think was Hogan vs Zeus. I wonder if No Holds Barred is on DVD now, I miss that movie… Rip Em!!!

Hollywood Joe - February 15, 2012
Wrestling is slightly redeemed by the Barnum ‘n’ Bailey atmosphere behind it, in my mind. Campy comedy. Nascar is serious. Ouch!

Those 2 are?
Man, your perception of America’s problems are just a tad warped :)

delias man - February 15, 2012
oh good gracious
Arsenal just lost 4-0 in Milan, and all these folk on twitter are like Wenger should leave the team blah blah blah. These tournaments really seem to make fanbases who have awesome domestic runs hate their lives.
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012

delias man - February 15, 2012
Landon Donovan won Player of the Month for Everton. MLS players are rockin’ it in the EPL right now. I think he’ll go to Everton after his Galaxy contract is up, then maybe the Galaxy go after Clint Dempsy : )
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
Honestly, I wish Landon would just go now. I know it will never happen, but I want to see him play at a higher level.
And I would be surprised if Dempsey doesn’t go to a top-tier team soon.
fbihop - February 15, 2012
we’ve seen him play at a higher level, and he’s kicking butt at Everton. You can’t hate on him for sticking with his domestic league.
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
Germany was never going to be a fit for him.
Don’t know why his dumb agent didn’t steer him to UK a dozen years ago.
delias man - February 15, 2012
yeah, cause then what about LA??
uschris0304 - February 15, 2012
I believe the argument is that because MLS is to soccer as the Mexican league is to baseball, he’s hurting himself not going to the big show, LA be damned.
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
Well then whats the point of even starting MLS if we want to see all our best homegrown players go play overseas??
uschris0304 - February 15, 2012
I want to see MLS get better, not worse.
uschris0304 - February 15, 2012

meercatjohn - February 15, 2012

nolander - February 15, 2012
New Girl has really found it’s voice lately, and is fun to watch
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
yes
personally I think its been pretty great since the 4th or 5th episode. They need a way to highlight that the true stars of the show are the dudes not zooey.
nolander - February 15, 2012
Sitcom history tells us
that rarely do a group of individuals break out on a show, normally you get one breakout character (Fonzie, Urkel, Alex P. Keaton) who will become the focal point of the show. Now, not seeing an episode of said show, I don’t know if one of the male characters has that within him but if he does, it would not surprise me if future episodes don’t exploit that.
bhsportsguy - February 15, 2012
You are right BUT
I feel like the show is missing out on a huge audience because the perception of the show is its all zooey all the time(I’m assuming but probably right on this), when in reality the other characters are what bring me back to the show. I do enjoy her on the show, especially since she seems to be almost playing a parody of the whole manic pixxy girl thing.
nolander - February 15, 2012
Seinfeld wasn’t always about Jerry. It’s a show that hasn’t finished it’s first season yet, calmate por favor
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
true
but zooey can be a bit polarizing these days. At least on the internet. Maybe I spend too much time on the internet.
nolander - February 15, 2012
Generally
shows like Seinfeld, MTM, Bob Newhart, Dick Van Dyke are more about the lead’s reactions to the characters around him or her than being all about them.
bhsportsguy - February 15, 2012
hm
new girl is kind of the opposite, with zooey being craaaaaaazy with everyone playing off of that and trying to deal with her oddness.
nolander - February 15, 2012
she keeps the plot moving, I think it works
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
I enjoy the dynamic

fbihop - February 15, 2012

fbihop - February 15, 2012
The show is very young still. Schmidt is a breakout character but awareness takes time. I remember watching Happy Days in its first season and wondering more about what happened to Chuck Cunningham than what the Fonz would do next.

Michael White - February 15, 2012
Considering the market
I would agree with this idea and I like the idea of having at least two position players go into their FA years with the Dodgers
bhsportsguy - February 15, 2012
Willing to believe it for 2013, not sold after that. He’s getting to the age where the guys I compare him to fell off a cliff.

delias man - February 15, 2012
Paul O’Neill probably the best comp to Ethier on that list.
Like I said if you can get 2012-2014 on a discount because 2011 stunk go ahead, it certainly won’t hurt anything. Extending it past that is where it can get ugly.
regfairfield - February 15, 2012
he always reminded me a lot of Shawn Green, so this makes sense.
G.Scott - February 15, 2012
Yeah the guy just won a gold glove for crying out loud!
nolander - February 15, 2012
Isn’t he an all-star CF too?
kinbote - February 15, 2012
Oh that’s fine then, I was thinking 2013-2015.
The two main names that come to mind when I do comps are Jason Bay and Brad Hawpe and they both fell apart at 31.
regfairfield - February 15, 2012
Then again unlike Ethier they were very good at 29.
regfairfield - February 15, 2012
Ethier is brittle and inconsistent.
He will be on the team this year and the team will still not fare well.
Trade Ethier at the break and let the new owner reshape the team.
68elcamino427 - February 15, 2012
Big problem with that plan is what the heck are you gonna get for Ethier and will it be worth more than a draft pick?
regfairfield - February 15, 2012
If Ethier is performing well, something good could come of it.
Why throw money at a problem?
68elcamino427 - February 15, 2012
Because no one wanted Josh Willingham when you could get Josh Willingham + a draft pick. Can’t get draft picks from guys you acquire at the deadline any more.
regfairfield - February 15, 2012
Well you can
if it was like Cole Hamels who would probably fit within the new CBA, Ethier would be on the edges
bhsportsguy - February 15, 2012
The Dodgers can get a draft pick for Ethier if he’s good this year, but if he gets traded the team that acquires him can’t.
regfairfield - February 15, 2012
Yeah
I knew that and then I remembered that other part about no more Elias ratings.
bhsportsguy - February 15, 2012
Ethier sucks!
/expects to be able to trade him for something
Michael White - February 15, 2012
He is great against right handers, when healthy
68elcamino427 - February 15, 2012
so, he’s the reverse Jonny Gomes then
G.Scott - February 15, 2012
This year is gonna decide if he enters FA as Jason Bay or Jason Kubel.
regfairfield - February 15, 2012
or Jason Isringhausen
court168627 - February 15, 2012 via Android app
I am betting
that offense continues to trend downward and that given the availability or lack thereof, Ethier will remain one of the better alternatives the Dodgers will have. It seems if you take Jerry Sands out of the equation for the moment, you have Silverio and Pederson as the best position prospects and neither of them would be expected to outperform Ethier this year or next year.
So, I think if it is possible they make an offer to extend or keep him for the season.
bhsportsguy - February 15, 2012
In a best case world. Sands develops into legitimate full time left fielder, Andre gets most at bats but shares some time with either Silverio or Van Slyke.
meercatjohn - February 15, 2012

You have to love the consistent narrative about 2004 and 2005.
bhsportsguy - February 15, 2012
Now the inevitable
bhsportsguy - February 15, 2012
Dodger Stadium FanFest on May 19
Eric Stephen - February 15, 2012
they’re doing it wrong
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
Why?
Eric Stephen - February 15, 2012
Just my two cents but
FanFest is supposed to be a preseason event, to get people at DS to sell them season ticket packages.
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
new owner?
Maddz - February 15, 2012
unless “appear at fanfest” is in the new owner’s contract, I don’t see the correlation
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
Frank probably can’t afford putting on the ritz, so to speak
Maddz - February 15, 2012
They usually have event when
they start selling single game tickets in March and they have some former players there but since that happens in the middle of ST, it would be hard for them to logistically put something like that together.
bhsportsguy - February 15, 2012
Just sayin’ the Giants and A’s both have an event called FanFest every year in Jan/Feb, where you can go get autographs, look at ST/Mini plans, tour the locker rooms, etc. Galaxy just did one last weekend, meet the newly signed players, tour the facilities. Seems silly to have something like this before a game, which already attracts it’s own crowd.
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
Right
It really is something that can be done during the offseason. Cubs, White Sox, D-Backs, Mariners, just to name four teams that immediately came to mind, do it too.
Eric Stephen - February 15, 2012
i went to la gran fiesta last year and loved it. i left with a bag full of autographs and old promos.
court168627 - February 15, 2012 via Android app
TBLA should meet up and run that bitch.
ishXdavid - February 15, 2012
Here's a pic of the Drysdale-Wills bobblehead and the Dodger Stadium 50th Anniversary t-shirt
Eric Stephen - February 15, 2012
Why is Don
pointing to his dick?
mleadman - February 15, 2012
he got this
Maddz - February 15, 2012
Telling the batter to “suck it”, of course.
David Young - February 15, 2012
The new marketing tagline is up on Dodgers.com
“An LA Tradition” with the cap logo for LA
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
Using the same cap logo
LAme
Eric Stephen - February 15, 2012
They kept “This is my town” for two seasons, but they kill “It’s time for Dodger Baseball” after one?
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
Josh Rawitch left
now they got some new hotshot who wants to put his own stamp on things?
nolander - February 15, 2012
New Hotshot
Maybe he’s working on Kate Upton
mleadman - February 15, 2012
I wish I were working Kate Upton.
ishXdavid - February 15, 2012
Josh was in charge of Public Relations not Marketing, big difference.
meercatjohn - February 15, 2012
blah blah blah
nolander - February 15, 2012
seems like a bit of a desperate attempt to prevent fans from defecting to the angels
court168627 - February 15, 2012 via Android app
I just hope it leads to a series of commercials with old time LA Dodger footage
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
laaaaaaame
court168627 - February 15, 2012 via Android app
What?
I’ll be happy when they just settle for one.
DodgerofTrolleys - February 15, 2012

Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
First four?
There are only four.
DodgerofTrolleys - February 15, 2012
i’m guessing first four weeks of the season
Maddz - February 15, 2012
Oh sorry hadn't seen the "weeks".
DodgerofTrolleys - February 15, 2012
ah yes, I was not referring to those weeks, but the first four weeks of the season. Eight appearances for the Angels in total this season
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
PUJOLS
meercatjohn - February 15, 2012
this reply confuses me
Josie Becker - February 15, 2012
I got you.
Maddz - February 15, 2012
was getting to that.
Eric Stephen - February 15, 2012
What's the record amount of comments on a given post?
DodgerofTrolleys - February 15, 2012
That would make it the best post
mleadman - February 15, 2012
it’s science
Maddz - February 15, 2012
